The Bells of Starston, Norfolk

  • Starston is home to two rings of bells, but today we are looking at the heavier of the two. The lovely church of St Margaret sits on the side of a raised bank, set back off of the busy road. The tower holds a ring of six bells, that are not the easiest to ring. There is certainly some movement somewhere in the fittings as it can be felt quite well when ringing the 4th. They form a lovely village ring of six and although a tad odd-struck, they aren't difficult to get good striking from.
The bells are cast by two founders. The 2nd, 4th and 5th were cast in 1847 by Charles & George Mears. The 3rd and tenor were cast in 1619 by William Brend. This ring of five was augmented to six in 1903 by the addition of a Mears & Stainbank treble, at which time all the bells were rehung in a new metal frame by George Day & Sons of Eye, Suffolk.
The ringing featured in this video was recorded during our summer tour to Norfolk in 2023.
Starston, St Margaret. 6 bells, 8cwt in A.
