I agree spec with that argus monitor. As a pet owner, spec with reptiles, you realy need to respect when they clearly show they dont want to be handled and not insist on it and stress them out. I Never forget my green iguana, such a social lizard, but there where days when he said with his entire body that I dont wanna be handled now and Then you let it be. Sadly I see so much on youtube now days, everyone wants to be a reptile expert but they show more or less zero love to the animal.
Even a smooth brain like me knows that you should never force handling on a monitor. They’re intelligent enough that they will not forget about you doing that and are not going to like you or tame down as easily.
"Start with a savannah monitor, it's one of the best beginner monitors!" The WORST monitor advice you could possibly give. Most savannah monitors barely make it 5 years in captivity before they die of fatty liver disease because their owners are feeding them rodents and chicken legs. Savannah monitors are almost strictly insectivores in the wild and their systems can't handle all the high fat content of vertebrates like mice and rats. And feeding a monitor that size nothing but invertebrates is ridiculously expensive. That is just the beginning too. There are a whole host of other things people are doing wrong with them that everybody thinks is right. The truth is that nobody really knows what the proper way to care for a savannah monitor is. Everything from the diet to the humidity, to the size of the enclosure, are all relative unknowns. Better advice is start with an Ackie monitor. Small, easy to care for, probably won't try to kill you, and relatively cheap to feed. Or if you insist on something huge, a black throat or asian water monitor are better options. They will be easier to care for, generally not as mean as other large monitors, but much more expensive, so don't be short on cash.
I agree Ackies are the best of all the monitors when it come to care!!! But it's hard sometimes considering Savannah cost $20 to Ackie $350-400 and Red Ackie $400-600
I just got a baby one after failing with a different baby one. Since they were both wild caught they would not eat. I have not given up on the second one yet tho. I’m doing my best
Dave Kauffman just released an updated video on Savanna Monitors called "Are we keeping them correctly". I think the 2 biggest problems are diet as you mentioned and light. When I say light i mean UVB. Dave took a reading of the UVB in Africa and it was the highest uvb reading he ever took. 11.3 which would explain why Savannas in captivity are so dark and dull and the ones you see in the wild are bright and more colorful for the most part as UVB will brighten an animals colors. Other than that. Thier enclosure should be set up kinda like a forest with humidity around 70% and ambient temps around 80dg on the low end with a basking spot of around 130.
So cute when you held the white throw like a baby! Just proves that they really are incredible animals! Love them, i am saving for an Ackie at the moment! Really looking forward getting into the monitor species!
+Josh Quayle thanks Josh!! Sizzler really is a big baby! Still a wild animal though. Always have to be vigilant when working with animals, even the tame ones. Good luck with your Ackie!!
My towns reptile rescue has an extremely friendly Argus monitor her name is Penelope. Got out of her enclosure by herself came and checked me out and let me pet her. Once she was done with me petting her she turned and went back into her enclosure. An awesome experience
Excellent video! I'm a huge fan of monitors myself. I enjoy working with them more than any other reptiles because of their incredible intelligence. Nearly my entire channel is about my big male Nile.
Savannah monitor is maybe the most understood of monitors. Medium sized, burrowing, snail specialists, nothing like their cousins black throats. Normal size of savannah monitors in wild is 40-70 cm and researches have found vertebrates don't belong into their diet in any way.
Argus monitors an tame just fine. Sure they are a bit more difficult than some other species, but they aren't impossible. I saw a tame one in a local pet shop earlier today. the problem is that your argus doesn't like you. Probably because of the way you are repeatedly jabbing your hand at him in the enclosure rather than letting him calm down and get used to you being there.
Awesome video! Love monitors, but my wife had a bad feeding experience many moons ago with a pair of exanthematicus I had (squealing mouse tug-o-war) so, no more monitors for me!
Chuck Horne thanks chuck!! Maybe one day you'll get back into them! I can see where your wife is coming from though. That would freak just about anyone out haha
my asian water monitor is around of the size of that argus monitor @ 8:40 mine is super tame tho, i like to give her back rubs while she just chills with her hands and feet towards her tail lol. got super lucky with her eats off my hand and everything.
I'll do a lot of research and I have the time space and money but would a black throat, white throat, or black roughneck be the best first monitor. I know savannahs aren't very good just because they are really misunderstood on how hard their care actually is. Anyways thanks!
And would a tree monitor be ok as long as I did a ton of legitimate research and am prepared for a most likely very expensive initial cost and a 5x6x3 enclosure. Thanks
+Y33T M3RK for a first monitor black throats, white throats, and tree monitors are hard to take care of imo. I'm totally for doing all your research yourself because a lot of that information is invaluable, but having experience with monitors is also invaluable. Sometimes you kind of have to be thrown into the fire and learn that way, but the monitors you named are usually a 2nd or 3rd type of monitor. Ackies are the best beginner monitors due to their calm nature but if you want to get into the bigger monitors that's a different story. Up to you but do your research before making a decision. A lot of books will recommend straying away from the big monitors as your initial monitor. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!
Could you make a video discussing the morphs of iguana? I can't find anything current but I've read that you can be ripped off buying blues or reds if you're not careful. Thanks.
dont use these videos to learn how to proper take care of a monitor, they made SOOOOOOOOOOOO many mistakes in this video that you shouldnt do... these guys are idiots who are spreading their stupidity to new time keepers who dont know any better
So my savanah monitor passed away the other day is it possible he got the cold i had and if you have information on sickness and disease prevention PLEASE let me know cause id rather not lose another beautiful animal
Cameron Graves hi Cameron. It’s pretty much impossible for you to give one of your animals a sickness from a cold. He most likely had parasites. Checking the feces, keeping your animals warm and hydrated, and keeping a close eye on them are the best ways to avoid sickness. If you notice any strange things about an animals actions, arrange a vet check immediately. Hope this helped. Adam
Smh. They are living breathing sentient animals not toys to be given to children then gotten 'rid of' once the novelty has worn off or when the parents come to the realisation that they're going to be unable to properly care for the animal ...they should have researched properly and thought about that first
Have a 5' x 4' x 3' vuvarium build that I am posting a video on by the end of the month. Looking for a monitor. Any breeders you suggest that I can buy from? I'm in NYS
I like how you make them personable but still give warnings..I have a monitor and most videos act like they are venomous snakes!! I get, to be cautious but some videos make me nervous about touching mine, if this makes sense..
Top5Daily Do you even have the resources to keep these guys when they get older? They are both gonna need a huge enclosure or a whole room and surely can't be kept together long term.
They need a lot of space, even for their size, because monitors are among the most active lizards on the planet. They eat a lot and have fast metabolisms. Monitors range widely in size. I think for most people, the smaller monitors/dwarf monitor species are the best choices for a pet monitor, because the bigger ones can be expensive to keep and feed, difficult to care for, and they can seriously injure you. A single adult Ackie monitor can be kept in a 5-foot long x 3-foot deep x 3-foot tall enclosure (bigger enclosures are even better) with a lot of substrate to dig in, hides, and a temperature gradient with a relatively hot basking spot. Make absolutely sure they can't burn themselves. You can temporarily get away with somewhat smaller enclosures for baby Ackies, but even they shouldn't be kept in anything less than 4' x 2' x 2'. They like very warm temperatures because they are a desert species. They also need ultraviolet light to stay healthy. Cage cleaning, a varied diet, and constant supply of fresh drinking water are essential.
+Idinin Mahmood monitors are harder than iguanas. Sometimes age and size calm them down like sizzler here haha. Also depends on the species. Some like miles and argus monitors are pretty much impossible. Savs, white throats, and maybe water monitors can calm down with a lot of human interaction.
Feenie probably get a Red Ackie Monitor, they are small, tame andare probably even better than a Savannah Monitor for being a first time varanid keeper, and they are native to Australia so you shouldnt have many problems obtaining one, hope this helps.
what should u do......? u should respect and abide by the bylaws of your country. period. “how can i break the law by buying illegal animals” is why our hobby suffers as much as it does.
Why does it seem like all the female monitors are the agressive ones? I've been binging on all sorts of monitor videos and its always the females that are pissed off.
Great video guys, I currently have a white throat, I would love to get some advice from you about the locality perhaps, I´m having a hard time trying to correctly identify him. check my channel to se videos of him. Thanks! Subd.
I hate to comment about this normally but anyone who allows his monitors to get that morbidly obese does not know enough about his animals, on the same the way his monitors behave so nervous is not good for their health and is due to a lack of correct handling any monitor can be habituated, some like Argus and Nile definitely take more time but are possible. All in all it's a nice collection but I am uncomfortable about the way they are being kept. Keep in mind that's just my opinion I have kept carnivores now 12 years and monitors are my personal passion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions
Wow... Was it a contest to see who could drop a lizard from 5ft high the most? Its hard to watch.. Parents must make bank. The two of you together and not a single personality. Try smoking a joint before the next video.. Just try not to throw the animals on the ground as hard as you can again.

That was painful to watch. I hate ‘keyboard warriors’ as much as anyone, but with respect, the handling leaves a lot to be desired.
I was cringing it was a hard watch poor lil guys stressing them out like that
I agree spec with that argus monitor.

Yep, this is not how you care for and handle monitors.
I’ve got a sand monitor (very similar to the yellow spotted monitor in this video) in my front yard, I love the little fella
Isnt sand and argus the same species? Panoptes and gouldii
Sizzler is chill af

BacktotheFuture reptiles thank you!! Mike has an amazing collection. Growing more and more by the day!
hi I watch your videos you should make more
My towns reptile rescue has an extremely friendly Argus monitor her name is Penelope. Got out of her enclosure by herself came and checked me out and let me pet her. Once she was done with me petting her she turned and went back into her enclosure. An awesome experience
LOVE the name of the Argus. One of the best-named movie villains of all time
Excellent video! I'm a huge fan of monitors myself. I enjoy working with them more than any other reptiles because of their incredible intelligence. Nearly my entire channel is about my big male Nile.
This video was so funny, but so educational.
Great video Adam!! Monitors are definitely my favourites out of all lizards :):)
Savannah monitor is maybe the most understood of monitors. Medium sized, burrowing, snail specialists, nothing like their cousins black throats. Normal size of savannah monitors in wild is 40-70 cm and researches have found vertebrates don't belong into their diet in any way.
Cool lizards, but that Argos will remember that! Will never be tame
Argus monitors an tame just fine. Sure they are a bit more difficult than some other species, but they aren't impossible. I saw a tame one in a local pet shop earlier today.

Your Rkellys had me rolling hahaaaa that's gotta be some work keeping up with all that
Awesome video!
Chuck Horne Sometimes they even swallow the rodents while they are still alive. That's pretty traumatizing too, especially for the rodent... lol.
Thank you for this video! I just got my first monitor today named Kevin and am doing all the learning I can!
Awesome video man, makes me miss working with them.
The green tree monitor enclosure is way too small for him 😭
By far, the best beginner monitor is the ackies.
my asian water monitor is around of the size of that argus monitor @ 8:40 mine is super tame tho, i like to give her back rubs while she just chills with her hands and feet towards her tail lol. got super lucky with her eats off my hand and everything.
i love blackthroat throat monitors, they show alot of docileness and love to cuddle like tegus
Mertens water monitor is a must have
The best part of this episode is " I believe i can fly " 😂😂😂
Who makes those cages the indoor one that the sub adult argus is housed in?
Their head shapes reminds me of a turtle head.
I'll do a lot of research and I have the time space and money but would a black throat, white throat, or black roughneck be the best first monitor. I know savannahs aren't very good just because they are really misunderstood on how hard their care actually is. Anyways thanks!

OMG those are awesome lizzies! Watch your toes!
We love our varanids when they’re not trying to eat us! ;-)
A lacey will open u up like a tin of beans. Panoptes will eat mulgas ans spotted blacks etc in the wild no worries
Do us a favor. Quit feeding live and wild caught to your animals. Sorry I meant JonahVore
Could you make a video discussing the morphs of iguana? I can't find anything current but I've read that you can be ripped off buying blues or reds if you're not careful. Thanks.

Do you have any for sale cuz I've been looking for a White throat monitor for the longest time
Do a tour of your sanctuary
Have a 5' x 4' x 3' vuvarium build that I am posting a video on by the end of the month. Looking for a monitor. Any breeders you suggest that I can buy from? I'm in NYS
bre dono you probably already figured out there are very few monitor breeders. Nearly all monitors in the pet trade are wild caught.
I like how you make them personable but still give warnings..I have a monitor and most videos act like they are venomous snakes!! I get, to be cautious but some videos make me nervous about touching mine, if this makes sense..
you should give reference to age and size and the correlation between the two
what the cost of food (week or month) from babies to adult throat monitor . Please reply with more specific on the diet
Any suggestions for breeders?
Can u tell me how big a spiny necked monitor gets
I didn't know Argus monitors got that big. I thought it was a nile.
varanid9 check out mdf monitor on TH-cam. His Argus is 6.5 feet

Recommends savannah monitors for beginners. Lost my interest.
Please do a vedio on all your pets
Do another reptile room
Sometimes people just have to be able to read an animal. Not everyone can do.
great vid i just got a water monitor and a nile monitor and they love each other is that good or bad
Top5Daily Do you even have the resources to keep these guys when they get older? They are both gonna need a huge enclosure or a whole room and surely can't be kept together long term.
smfh. idiots.
Where is mrs. Kipling?
Isnt the ackie monitor the smallest.
To me they seem like poopers 😂 😂 😂
Did anyone else think f kamp Kenan when they watched the intro?
Do u all sell them
I want a pet monitor lizard! How big of a tank do they need?
They need a lot of space, even for their size, because monitors are among the most active lizards on the planet. They eat a lot and have fast metabolisms. Monitors range widely in size. how do you tame moniter i have one
if it's healthy you can't. and what species is it?
+Idinin Mahmood monitors are harder than iguanas. Sometimes age and size calm them down like sizzler here haha. Also depends on the species. Some like miles and argus monitors are pretty much impossible. Savs, white throats, and maybe water monitors can calm down with a lot of human interaction.
Idinin Mahmood look to N.E.R.D for solid info on taming monitors.
@@dustintinsley3899 I second this. The guys at NERD will show you how to handle a monitor without terrifying it.
If you guys sale any rhino iguanas or blue tree monitor let me know need a pair
WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!
i LIVE IN AUSTRALIA AND HERE YOU CAN ONLY KEEP NATIVE AUSTRALIAN LIZARDS AND SAVANNAH MONITORS ARE FROM AFRICA
Feenie probably get a Red Ackie Monitor, they are small, tame andare probably even better than a Savannah Monitor for being a first time varanid keeper, and they are native to Australia so you shouldnt have many problems obtaining one, hope this helps.
+Feenie ACKIE MONITORS ARE THE BEST!
what should u do......? u should respect and abide by the bylaws of your country. period. “how can i break the law by buying illegal animals” is why our hobby suffers as much as it does.
Hee man!we got the same passion!!! I wanna help!!!!
I hate people saying pets are collection
Why does it seem like all the female monitors are the agressive ones? I've been binging on all sorts of monitor videos and its always the females that are pissed off.
I’ve had both sexes of monitor try to rip my face off haha. Sometimes the guys get more aggressive in the breeding season
Great video guys, I currently have a white throat, I would love to get some advice from you about the locality perhaps, I´m having a hard time trying to correctly identify him. check my channel to se videos of him. Thanks! Subd.
Ivan RE localities are really hard to distinguish on white throats. They vary a lot even though they look pretty similar

Addison Higgins there’s a lot of poor everything here. i’ve never seen so many obese lizards in one video
So this guy has no real clue how to handle his own animals. Wow.
Wow... Was it a contest to see who could drop a lizard from 5ft high the most? Its hard to watch.. Parents must make bank. The two of you together and not a single personality. Try smoking a joint before the next video.. Just try not to throw the animals on the ground as hard as you can again.
