  • Within many pockets of the land, North America's original indigenous groups still remain present as sovereign bands and communities, with time-honored traditions and stories to share. The largest of these reservations in the United States is the Navajo Nation, which sits across three southwestern states and is greater than the state of West Virginia in area. For a century now, the Navajo, or Diné as they refer to themselves, have hosted an annual ceremonial festival around the small desert town of Gallup, located in New Mexico's northwestern extremities, dedicated to honoring the remarkable assortment of cultural practices among the various Native American groups. As I began to even plan for this months-long Frontier Americana tour, I knew real soon that this would be a highlight one could not afford to miss along the way. Through the day and a half spent following the events held here, I take you through my personal lens, as a complete outsider witnessing an indigenous celebration full of cultural demonstrations for the first time. To the Navajo and other tribes attending this ceremonial, you are beautiful people, with an admirable wealth of culture. I am grateful and humbled to have gotten a tiny glimpse into your ways of life.
