Eyes, nose, tongue, body and soul, contact with sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, streams of thought, without defilement, is the ultimate truth of Buddhism..
I do too. But you know it's funny because of their unwillingness to mix with other races, cultures and globalize they've been able to do so. But when we try to do the same in other parts of the world it's called racist, antiquated, and nationalistic.
Zen (Chinese: Chán • Korea: Seon • Vietnam: Thiền) is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang dynasty as the Chan School (Chánzong 禪宗, "meditation school") or the Buddha-mind school (foxin zong) - and later developed into various sub-schools and branches. From China, Chán spread south to Vietnam and became Vietnamese Thiền, northeast to Korea to become Seon Buddhism, and east to Japan, becoming Japanese Zen.
As an Asian living in Asia, I respect Japan culture and their Shinto-Buddhist traditions. The Japanese Zen aesthetics are refined and there is so much respect for nature. Because they are so homogenous, they have a strength and identity second to none. The highly ritualised Japanese must have so much pride in their advanced and refined culture and traditions. They are truly the most advanced culture in Asia.
I personally would have said that they adopted culture from China as opposed to stole it. I mean concepts of Buddhism that China has, (if you say stole with regards to Japan), is then stolen from the Nepalese/Indian area because that is where Buddhism originates due to Hinduism. Personally I love the way that culture evolves and adopts and adapts to what is around them. The fact that the Japanese on a whole work together and work hard for their community and their workplace is admirable.

Lived in Tokyo for a fews months, managed to travel the main island widely. Lovely, lovely place. Have maintained their culture so well while being fully modern. The constant earthquakes are something else though....
I've lived in Japan for 22 years and believe me, this documentary shows a very polished, narrow view of society here. As a Canadian I was horrified by the absolute disregard for the environment and the treatment of the landscape and waterways. This documentary portrays Japan in the way that the current government would like outsiders to see it. But its a very different view once you begin living here for any length of time.

This is indeed the best documentary channel. It does not lack documentaries. It's very good at not not-having documentaries. Documentaries are on this channel. If you were looking for a documentary channel that didn't have any documentaries, than this would be the worst documentary channel. This channel, however, does have documentaries, and it is the best at having them.
Beautiful video! Well done. Just like others say, title doesn’t match. I respect all unique cultures of the countries. And I’m proud of my culture, Japan
At first I thought that what drew me to Japan was anime, tourist spots.. but it was really their way of life. The way they venerate life gives them a vivacious vibe. And it shows in their daily life, the structures, the food.. I wish I could live there and experience all of it.
A culture that learned from the wrong decisions of the past and rose from the ashes like the Phoenix blossoming to success within conscious harmony...✨✨🙏🏻
In my eyes, Japan is the most beautiful place on earth. Sadly I can see that teenagers are very influenced by occidental cultures that never include the discipline, respect for adults and in general to the rest of persons, art, beauty, tradition and all that makes Japan the nation it is. Thank you for this amazing video.
As a Japanese, I asked my American, German, and French friends, "What is good about Japan?" To my surprise, their responses were exactly the same. they said Because Japan has a tradition that has been around for 2,000 years and the world's most advanced technology at the same time. There is no other country outside of Western culture where you can have such an experience. The reason why I was surprised was because their answer was completely obvious to me. Indeed, no country in the world has been "the same country" for 2,000 years.
Exactly. I’ve spent half of my working life between Japan (Osaka & Tokyo) and the US….Japan has not only kept its traditions, it has kept its HISTORY…. The only thing in Japan that I don’t care for are its earthquakes (I can’t forget the first time I woke up, terrified, in the middle of the night-to a swaying hotel room, on the 32nd floor-only to run into a yawning hotel employee, who told me, “It’s only a 5.0- 5.5,” and recommended that I “go back to sleep :) ….And while I know how safe & incredibly earthquake-proof Japanese buildings are….they still frighten me….

I disagree with most commentators ,this documentary is exactly zen ,it shows you the evidence of zen on the Japanese ,zen isn't relayed through language ,you can only see its results .
This is an absolutely brilliant, all encompassing documentary; and, once I released my expectation of a formal documentary on Zen Buddhism, I could appreciate its message -- seasoned with lighthearted observations -- that, in fact, the Japanese way of living and doing and being ... IS Zen!
So far, this reminds of a Luis Bunuel kind of “documentary”. Oddly interesting. Japanese will say they have no religion. I observe that being Japanese is the “religion”, a uniquely spiritual practice.
How the years go by; it is 2022 now, 6 years after this excellent documentary was released. It is really about Japan and the Japanese way of life, and does not go much into Zen itself. But then, Zen becomes a way of life, and the essential teaching is not to get obsessed with religion. A Zen student mentioned the word "Buddha" and his Zen teacher told him not to speak that dirty word, and to go wash his mouth! And another Zen teacher told his student: "You stink of Zen." :) They call Zen a Buddhist tradition, but truly, it derives from Buddhism andTaoism. The main teaching of Taoism is to go with the flow of the Tao, the energy of the universe. The word Zen arose from the Sanskrit word Dhyana, which means to meditate. Dhyan became Cha'an in China, and then Zen in Japan.
Respect to the beautiful Devine spirit of Japan and peace and harmony of the Japanese people.

This is a documentary about modern Japan, NOT Zen.
Ben Franklin99 And what if it is about zen in anouther country?

I agree... the title is misleading. Zen plays a part here, but a secondary one.
ZEN is a drum n bass producer
So why is that?
