  • All in a sudden, the convertible top switch stopped working. Replaced brake light switch behind the brake pedal. Didn't help. Checked the hydraulic pump and it was fine. Microswitch on the driver side top frame works as well. Noticed that the brake lights were not working, i.e. th brake lights didn't work when I pressed the pedal. Checked the fuse 46 and yes it was blown. Replaced it with a a new one but it got blown again the next day. Finally I took out the two rear brake light bulbs and found them corroded, even though not burned out yet. I replaced both with new ones so hopefully this is the permanent solution.

BMW's are famous for the bulbs in the electrical circuits. I had a 318i that had a blown bulb on the dashboard battery indicator light. The battery stopped charging. I replaced the battery and had the same result. I replaced the alternator and still had the problem. A $3.00 bulb was the culprit.

What was the result of replacing the bulb? Did it fix the problem of blowing the fuse? Any update?

It worked for a few days but the fuse blew again, even after replacing the bulbs. There is something else going on for sure. Haven't got the time to look into it yet. For now I am using the top manually. Fortunately it is very easy to open and close the top manually. Just need to open the manual switch on the top motor in the trunk, under the antenna.

Hi Jean, thanks for watching the video. I never got a chance to figure it out because someone bought the car before i figued it out. Of course i told him about all the issues with the car but he bought it anyway. It was not even on the market. He is the landscaper for my neighbor and saw it and we had a conversation and he ended up buying it. Sometimes these electric problems is difficult to track down. To fully resolve it, it might require doing a lot of trouble shooting using various techniques such as voltage drop etc. Not sure it's worthwhile trying to solve all issues. Sometimes it makes sense to live with some minor issues.

@@newcavemen6682 I'd tell him to look at the wire connection on the trunk lid if you see him again. A short in that harness is apparently common and could blow the fuse.
