Braided line for a bite guard? Nope. Wire if you like it. Heavy flouro is best, in my opinion. Better movement and Seaugar IGFA saltwater rated 100# flouro will stop bite offs, if you are not a wire guy.
Do not use the rod tip to move your popper, ever. You need to be in contact with the fish, at all times. Stop worrying about color. Worry about profile, shape, size, realism, movement and color last. Musky don't care about color, people do.
NEVER worry about putting a musky on the reel. Never. Never raise your rod above your waist. Keep the line as tight as possible, every time, at all times. Do NOT trout set. Strip set, hard and at a low angle. Then, do it two more times. If the fish are under 40", do not let them take line. Pin them and force them in. You never "tire them out." That's how you kill them in August. That fight should have been 12-25 seconds, tops. Musky tire fast, unlike pike.
Those flies are much too small for a decent size musky. This is not a set in stone rule. But, overall. 9-10" flies will weed out the tiny ones, for the most part.
The reason you are losing them, as if they needed any help tossing that fly, you are letting them run around, with not enough pressure.

Exactly what I needed
Couple things here, one that is NOT a big fly. Two, a sink tip is not used to get the fly down in esox fishing, we use unweighted flies with sink tip shooting heads to ACTUALLY throw big flies. I regularly throw 12" BEAST fleyes on my 9wt.
Also Esox fishing without a net is straight amateur hour.
Totally agree with everything you've stated. This show was done in 2003 and we were definitely total amateurs at the time. Certainly there has been a great deal of new info on how to fly fish for musky on a fly since then and our more recent videos reflect that. Thank you for the feedback

Over fighting muskies is a death wish to these fish. With flyrod it seems to take to long to get in and unhooked. Great catch though

As with many casting instructors it’s do as I say not as I do. You say out to the right on the back cast and up over the top on the forward cast. I watched and after this instruction I didn’t see you do it once 😂

No problem. I do the same. When teaching newbies I teach the 10 O’clock / 2 O’clock concept as a training device but I readily admit than in practice I don’t follow the rule but rather keep it in mind so I’m not slapping the water with my rod tip 😊
Also I should have mentioned in my first criticism that he obviously knows how to cast. I have a 9 ft 8 wt and when casting big bass flies I feel like I’m trying to lift a battleship from the water by its anchor chain. So right or wrong I could use lessons from Bill
The way you made this seem is Muskie spinner fishing is the fish of 10000 casts but on the fly it’s maybe a 100 casts
