  • Steve from GI Joburg gives a tour of his toyrooms. Warning! There will be non-GI Joe toys. And talk of potty-training.

    Absolutely amazing collection , preserved from childhood immaculately.
    You're very fortunate to still have your childhood room available to you.
    As circumstances change as we grow up.
    My mother ended up selling our childhood home when my father died and moved back home (to another country) so yeh you are very fortunate indeed.

    Awesome collection. I was fortunate to buy a box of Joes and a yard sale for 20 bucks for my son in 2000. Although he was too young to play with them then, I set them as well as 12" Joes aside for when he was older. I wanted him to have the same fun with the smaller Joes as I did with the older ones. There were over 100 Joes and 8 or 9 vehicles in the box. I believe he still has them.

      @@gijoburg We wound up having to get a book on them because we had no idea who was who or what equipment belonged to which figure. There were a lot of custom figures as well and body parts. I was happy that he loved G.I.Joe as much as I did. I was around 6 or 7 when I received my 1st G.I.Joe, it was the 12" Green Beret with the bazooka. It was 1968 when I began to play with them and around 73/74 when I got out of them, so from the war era to the beginning of the Adventure Team. Which was probably Action Man for you.

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whew, Action Man and Adventure Team were before my time. But I was raised on GI Joe in the ‘90s and the advent of the internet allowed me to expand my “back catalogue”. Haven’t got quite as far as ‘68 tho! 😝

    Seeing this....makes me wish I still had all my old GI Joes.

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From what I can gather, you have lots of company! But the odd thing about re-buying the figures you had and lost is that you can imbue all of that history into a duplicate figure that you just bought. Particularly when the figure is less than mint. At least that's how it works for me. It almost doesn't matter that it's not the same toy you'd had as a kid.

    • @pathogenoxide6917
      @pathogenoxide6917 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aye, I guess that's how the whole nostalgia bit works eh? You attach memories to places, objects, even sounds, and just a glimpse or listen and suddenly you're right back there in that place in time.
      One of my favorite memories was seeing those 2000 era Joes on a couple of racks in some store, haven't seen GI Joe in stores for years until then. Missed that Laser Viper filecard, the idea that Cobra's troops were so off their rockers that they decide that testing working laser guns on each other was a good idea still makes me chuckle.

      @@gijoburg You absolutely should. My parents were together for 40 years before my Mom passed on. Dad's still in mourning, it's been several since. They gave me, and my siblings one of those upbringings that every kid can only dream of, and few get to live. Not rich by any means, just spoiled beyond belief with affection, love and always being there for us no matter what. They stepped up at every opportunity from Team Mom, to becoming a Referee & Assistant Coach/Coach on days the Coach couldn't make it, to being Team Drivers when other parents were too "busy" with their life to be involved in their kids. Then there was Christmas & Birthdays, my collection was much like yours, lots of variation and all fondly played with in scenario, after scenario, after scenario during countless afternoons, evenings and weekends. I can only hope to live up to be as good as they were with me.
      Get them on film, interview them for posterity and it's your history that you will always cherish, as well as a way for any future children to connect with. Thanks again.

    The Warthog was one of my favorite vehicles as a kid. I took mine in the tub and I loved putting together the ultimate team to be transported in it, of coarse with Sgt. Slaughter as the leader. I still have the Warthog but it hasn't aged well. Th plastic became brittle and the hinges on the hatches broke as did other parts. It's a real shame, even though I tried to take good care of it. However I found last year on eBay a reissue of it called the Night Rhino. It's black with gold accents and silver missiles. It is very cool. I had to have it of coarse. I got it for 50USD. It has the same stickers as the Warthog does. I again had to put together the ultimate team to ride in it, but this time modern era. I highly recommend it. By the way it come wth a repainted version of Dusty v2. That the one that came with Sandstorm originally. Great collection. I had tons of vehicles as well but not many as well cared for as your. Just a few key pieces.

      @gijoburg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great stuff Phil! I'm glad you have a Warthog back in your life. She's an old friend of mine too and was always the ride for the ultimate team... led by the Sarge, naturally. My buddy Paul has the black and gold version and it's every bit as good as the original. Younger too! I hope you get lots of enjoyment out of it!

    You ever thought of teaming up the Thunderclap, Mean Dog, Slugger, and the one w/ the ICBM (I forget it's name atm) to form an Artillery Battery? The Mean Dog has a horrid stand for it's weapon and it's main gun really isn't an artillery piece, but I thought it was a better fit w/ an artillery team than w/ a group of tanks. Plus, Artillery Batteries do need troops and vehicles to protect it.

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re absolutely right, I do view the Mean Dog as more artillery than anything else. Probably since it shared the same gimmick as the Cobra artillery vehicle from the previous year. And I do intend on featuring all of those vehicles in a major land battle one day! Throw in a few frontline vehicles like the Raider versus the HiSS II and some FANG and Mudfighter air support and will have quite a time!

    I found the playmobil jetliner now discontinued, around a year ago in a rubbish bin behind a second hand shop.All pieces were present in a nice large bag. What a surprise, beautiful model in great shape, even has a proper lavatory on board with toliet paper roll,lol. Also the Captain/pilot action figure is quite handsome, with a smart blue uniform and cap. Very large scale impressive model, one day I shall hang her from my ceiling.

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a terrific find! Playmobil is such a premium toyline, but I suppose it’s collectibility is fairly limited as it’s more “kiddified”. All the more likely to be found turfed out! You were the right man at the right time. I wanted her as a private fast jet to get a small team of Joes across the globe quickly; it doesn’t look quite right in that role. But it’s a fabulous piece to add to a display all the same. Love the movable nose wheel for accurate taxiing.

    wow... that's a lot of stuff! how do you clean off the dusts with this amount of stuff on display?

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuff that sees regular use doesn't get too dusty. It's mainly the stuff that's harder to get to that gets a fine dusty coat. So on principal, every time I visit my folks I take a vehicle down and wipe it with a damp cloth before using it on maneuveres! I also have a really cool Tamiya cleaning brush that I can do some quick ad hoc dusting. But because both spaces are very much "lived in" and not loft or basement, regular vacuuming and dusting keeps airborne dust to a minimum.

    Huh you need a Cobra Maggot eventually plus an Ultimate Cobra Commander. Cause once you get the Ultimate... he will replace every other CC you own. Save Armor Cobra Commander-- who you designate as the lowly Fred pretender! Or when CC thinks he can take on Snake-Eyes. I really wish I kept my Vintage Joe collection in such order as you did. I can only think of the numerous vehicles I had, the memories/battles they had. Of course sadly how they all got broke, were traded away to friends, or left behind/probably dumped. Still, such a nice collection. Did you glue your MU Falcon's wings together?

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This Falcon comes from an animated series figure wave, he's great - better than the MU one. And the wings sprout from his forearm and his tricep and overlap nicely and don't get in the way of articulation! Win win win!
      I'm sorry about your childhood stuff, it seems to be the tale many can tell. But the cool thing about rebuying old toys as I have found (not all of my childhood stuff survived!) is that it almost doesn't matter that it's not the same toy. That's just a bragging right. I can imbue my childhood nostalgia and memories into a classic figure I just got in the post. It takes me back to all the instances I played with the duplicate of that figure. It's awesome.
