Nylon Strings vs Steel On Cigar Box Guitars: Actually Tested In This Video!

  • In the world of cigar box guitar builders, there are many interesting debates to be had. For example, some builders prefer magnetic pickups while others prefer piezos, and there's always the question of whether to use a scarf joint or flat fender headstock. However, most CBG builders tend to agree that nylon strings aren't the best choice for cigar box guitars. While nylon strings don't project as well as steel strings, they do produce a unique "classical" sound that you can't achieve with steel strings. It's worth noting that by using a piezo pickup with a good preamp and amp, you can mitigate the projection issue and enjoy the mellow tones of a nylon-stringed cigar box guitar. In this video, I use George Frederick Handel's "Lascia ch'io pianga" to demonstrate the differences between a nylon and steel CBG, so you can decide whether you want a nylon-stringed cigar box guitar in your instrument collection. Enjoy! - Dr. Liza Seigido

Hey, fellow artist! ❤ I forgot to mention something important in this video: I only build with piezo pickups. 😅 This is important bc you can’t use magnetic pickups with nylon strings. I prefer piezo pickups over magnetic 🧲 Find out why by watching this short video: th-cam.com/users/shorts7707k68mSfc?si=Dk3SzBTdRYvoLfDF

My exploration of different types of strings led me to build my baritone CBGs with wound nylon strings only. Learn more by checking out this video: th-cam.com/video/5sXyftx1Umo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rH8xgJzrlzUuIsff

interesting comparison, I think you're right about why others say avoid nylons, but there is a practical reason, from what I understand Nylon strings don't work with single coils or humbuckers which are quite popular on a cigar box and thus why they aren't used, I liked the sound of the nylons with the piezo, unique tone especially with the slide opposed to picked.
funny thing, I've never used either for a Cigar box guitar, I use Nickel strings from electric guitars, not quite as heavy sound as the steels and the variety of gauges to play around with I have found to be better

Hi! You are right! ✨I forgot to mention that I only built using piezo pickups; that was a very important detail that I didn’t address in this video. 😓 I avoid magnetic pick ups because they negate the unique acoustic characteristics of my cigar box guitars. 🎸 I made a funny little short aboutthis topic. check it out. Let me know what you think: 🤔 th-cam.com/users/shorts7707k68mSfc?si=Dk3SzBTdRYvoLfDF

@@psycheopera I watched your short and I enjoyed it, you are quite right, the piezo does preserve the acoustic qualities of the cigar box guitar much better than a magnetic pickup.
I'm very much an advocate of using natural acoustics with builds to give a unique tone, the size of the box for example, do you favor deeper or wider boxes for sound, I like a deep body for resonance

Hey JP!✨ I really like using larger boxes, but they are hard to come by. Of the boxes I've been able to get regularly, my favorite is the Tabak Especial Toro Negra, which is approximately 9.5 x 8 x 3 inches.

@@psycheopera thats a very nice size for a box, that 3 inches deep must give some beautiful resonance and tone. here in the UK I regularly find similar size tins for my builds 10.5 x 8 x 2, get quite as deep, but just enough for my 3 stringers and my 2 string basses. looking at your range, I'd say you've chosen your box sizes very well, bigger ones are rare, but worth it
not to make you jealous but I recently got ahold of a massive chocolate tin for a bass build 15 x 8 x 3 and another thats 5 inches deep, the tones will spectacular. may I ask, do you ever come across tins of danish butter cookies over there? if so I recommend them for builds if you ever wish to try one.

Wow! I am jealous LOL!😮 I've never run into a cookie or chocolate tin that size. I'm very curious to hear your bass, JP! Please produce a video; I'll share it in my community posts. 🔥🤩

I definitely appreciate them more now. No, they don't project well, but, I usually use an amp with my cbgs. I hope to make more nylon cbg recordings soon. ✨

Don't think I have seen someone do classical on a CBG before. Usually blues. Nice! Is there a standard open tuning for the CBG? I know that Open G is pretty popular with blues slide guitar.

    • @psycheopera
      @psycheopera  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi Mike! Yes, I agree. Handle is unusual for cbg music. This is definitely a blues instrument😄Another popular tuning is EBE, but, you can make almost any open tuning work. For example, I’m writing a song for myself to sing and I sound best in F# minor in this song, so I tuned one of my CBGs to F#C#F#. 💜

@@psycheopera Very cool! I love open tunings! Interesting because my Baritone Ukulele is tuned BEBE. Also, BEBEBE is a popular tuning for South Indian Carnatic Guitar. I turned you husband on to Gabriel Marin who is the guitarist for Consider the Source. But Gabe plays a whole bunch of Asian/ Middle Eastern acoustic instruments as well. I have been learning the Dombra and Dutar from him for almost 2 years now. Both are two string instruments. Gabe had a solo CD called Ruminate where he plays these acoustic instruments as well as the carnatic style on a fretless electric guitar. He plays a double neck with one being fretless in Consider the Source. You might check him out and Consider the Source as well. All instrumental and different from anything else out there.

Hi Mike! Very cool! Open tuning is where its "at" for me right now : ) Lawrence played me one of Gabriel's videos. He's absolutely great! Thanks for letting me know about his band "Consider the Source." I subscribed to their TH-cam channel. 😃✨😁

Hi! ✨Your comment is very interesting. Two people have told me that my CBGs have a non-western sound quality. I think I can attribute the sound to my choice of saddle/bridge, which preserves resonances on the backside of the strings. Fascinating! Thank you for your comment. 🙏❤️
