My wife taught me this one with a few house rules, or maybe they just forgot the official way. First there are no negative value cards. Second is you can choose to flip one of the face down cards instead of drawing. This adds a risk/reward where you can better match the cards to cancel points, but if you play it wrong you could end the game before you are ready.
I first learned this game years ago with the -2 Jokers and it's pretty fun, I also now have a commercial game called Play Nine which is an 8 card golf with it's own cards and then there is also a rule where if you discard, you have to turn up one of your face down cards which I don't know of to be a rule variant with this game but it is the way my friend and I have played it.
