River to River Trail 2021 - Days 3 & 4

  • It's been a rainy couple of days on the trail but I'm making really good miles each day and make it past the halfway point in the middle of day 4 and reach the 85-mile mark at the end of the day.
The hardest part of the trail has been the road walking and the hellacious mud bogs on the trail. This is also a popular place for people to ride horses so the trail has big ruts and huge mud puddles that are nearly impossible to get around without getting your shoes wet and muddy.
I reach cache #1 on day 3 near Borks Falls and get loaded up on food for the next leg of the journey.
So far, it's been a beautiful hike with a lot of great Fall colors and I'm on schedule to finish in just over 7 days. Hike on!!!

Hey Paul it's great to see you back on the trail. Looks like you're in great shape as well.Really enjoyed and thanks for sharing this hike with us. Would be cool to run into you and Major Steve again on the LSHT. Oh by the way they rebuilt and finish the bridge at Stubblefield C G. Won't have to catch a shuttle around it. All concrete no hurricanes going to take this one out! That care my friend.

Hey man, it's great to hear from you! Thanks for checking out the video. I was in pretty good shape from a long Summer hike that I did but was unable to finish so I'm going back next year for a 2nd attempt.
I will say this trail was more difficult than I expected, I really planned to do 25 miles days and finish early on day 7 but I just couldn't;t make the miles once I got there.
Steve and I did talk about trying the LSHT again because we know we can beat our last attempt and especially if the bridge is finally done. Thanks for checking out the video and hopefully I'll see you somewhere on the trail, again!! Take Care!

Some of that looks similar to the Ozarks. There are some pretty cool striations in those big square rocks. Too bad I'm not a geologist (never thought I'd ever say that} LOL. I love the contrast the rain makes with the dark tree trunks and colorful foliage in Autumn, especially when the sun pops out. Thanks for taking us along.

Thanks for checking it out!! I was really reminded of Arkansas in a few areas on this trail. Some from the OHT, like the rock overhang campsite and then the rock formations in the giant boulder area reminded me of Devil's den area. I would say the hiking in Arkansas/ Ozarks is much harder. There were times the forest and the colors were absolutely amazing, it was really nice back in the woods. Overall it was a pretty great trail, thank you again!

Wow and I complain about the 15 miles of road walks on the Lone Star Trail. 😡

Definitely a lot of road walking on this hike! Luckily a large portion was on forest roads and it wasn't as bad on the eastern end. I estimated between 40 to 45 miles or roughly 25%. Whew! Thanks for checking it out!

Man I was gonna ask last time if you brought your WP socks with you still. I bet those really paid off with all the rain and the mud. Aside from the road walks it's still a really beautiful trail.

I was very happy with the WP socks on the first day but I hate to report that they failed. I started wearing them on day 3 and my socks were a tiny bit damp at the end of the day but not too bad. By the end of the 4th day, it was clear they had failed. I have no idea why. They were only worn 3 times before and never washed or dried.
There was a lot of road walking on this end but most of it was not too bad and it was a lot less on the eastern end. I still really enjoyed the trail overall!! Thanks for checking it out!!!

This trail ought to be called River-to-Road-to-River Trail. It seems very flat, though, the flattest of any of your hikes except maybe the Lone Star.

I would agree the Lone Star was the flattest and this is surely second. It did have a few uphill parts that were rocky and muddy. I guess you could say it was hilly in places and it really did turn out to be harder than I expected. There was more road walking than I've ever done, a lot of it was fairly pleasant on the country /forest roads and it really gets better on the Eastern side. Thanks for checking it out!
