  • A couple of really great days on the trail despite the rain. This part of the trail was super muddy due to all the rain and horse traffic on these sections.
    On day six I got off the trail so many times that I was only able to do 18-miles on the trail even though I did at least 20 to 21 miles. There were several re-routes where I got turned around for a while and later on I walked right by a turn-off and walked an extra mile on the road.
    At the end of day six, I wound up at the best campsite of the entire trip. I had a really great view from the tent and was able to leave the doors open all night and enjoy the stars. I also made it to cache number 2 near Eddyville and resupplied for the rest of the trip. Hike on!!!

    That looks like some good training for Vermud when you do the AT some day. I'm just amazed how you can go from home to 20+ mile days like this. You're one tough dude that's for sure. Sux to hear about your socks giving up. I have a pair of Rocky Gore-Tex that I have worn for years. I don't do 20 miles of solid wet mud with them either though. I'm beginning to wonder if that idea is even possible. Thanks for taking us along on such a beautiful journey !!!

      I'm leaning more towards the PCT or the CDT but I do have the Long Trail on my last as well so this could be potential training for that one. To be honest I actually didn't come straight from the couch on this one. I actually did a long thru-hike attempt over the Summer but wasn't able to finish because of a medical issue that caught me by surprise but I was able to hike over 400 miles on that one and am going back next year to try it again. Anyway, I thought I was going to be doing 25-mile days because I was fresh off of that hike but I just couldn't quite do it. Thanks for watching this series, I really appreciate it!!!

    The filming of you walking through the tunnel was well done!

      Thanks! I thought that was a really cool area! The tunnel had some really good natural reverb for singing. I tried it out after that shot but didn't film any of that, lol.

    Hey Perfect Pitch! I really enjoyed this section of trail from the comfort of my living room, hehe. Two of the most frustrating things are muddy trail and getting off trail but you made it all look fun.

      Always good to hear from the Bionic Man! This was a really pretty section of the trail and the road walking is finally at a minimum, except when I'm not paying attention, lol. I've never encountered mud like that and it went on for a large part of the day,, it was tiring for sure. There is a lot of horse traffic on this trail and it really gets bad after it rains. Thanks for checking it out man!!

    In the one horse gap area you can take a slight detour off the R2R and end up on top of those giant monoliths. It's a great camping area if time works out.

      That sounds like it would've been great! I think I hiked the trail so fast that I wasn't able to take full advantage of everything out there. I would have really liked to explore, more around the Panther Den area as well. I had a short amount of time to do it and it was still totally worth it for me. Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a message!

    Illinois sometimes does a good impression of a swamp. Welcome to Illinois mud.

      It was pretty intense! Especially on day 5 after all the rain and the area is so popular for horseback riding. Definitely an unexpected challenge but what a cool hike! Thanks for checking it out!

      If I knew beforehand I could have had some trail magic for you. I didn't know about that trail until you posted it. I once did the River to River Road Race relay with the company I worked for -- fun.

      @@DrsharpRothstein Damn, I didn't know anybody I knew lived near the trail. It is a fairly obscure trail, I heard about it several years back when I was living in St. Louis and wanted to do a fairly fast hike.

    Man, you were able to get some great mileage on day 5. That had to be tough in that mushy nasty muck. My legs were almost aching for you. Lol I hate the feeling when you realize your off trail, but sometimes it can't be helped. It just adds to the adventure, hahaha. I enjoyed watching this section Paul. Great effort ✌

      Always good to hear from you! I was amazed at how many miles I was able to do in all of that mud because I didn't expect it to go on and on like it did, it was still a lot of fun though. Thank God I had that Avenza app with the R2R maps, it works in airplane mode just like guthook so at least I was never really lost but wow, so easy to get off trail in some places, in others I just wasn't paying attention, and laughing at graffiti, lol. All in all, I really enjoyed these sections, the forest was beautiful and the road walking was way down. Thanks for checking it out!!!

    I'll give you an A+ for determination, those conditions can make hiking a real challenge for sure! With my navigational skills I'll still be lost.Just curious what kind of wildlife did you see? Always enjoy what seen Somewhereonthetrail .... Thanks Paul

    • @somewhereonthetrail
      @somewhereonthetrail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man! That mud was like nothing I've ever hiked through so it wears you down. I was using the Avenza app to stay on trail or I would probably still be out there lost too, lol!!! The app was definitely a lifesaver but most of it was marked really well.
      I didn't see a ton of wildlife mostly deer, a few squirrels and I heard a bunch of owls at night.
      Thanks for checking ou the video!

    You are ready to do the AT now that you’re familiar with rocks and mud! Maybe even the Long Trail? If you do, I just bought a house in Vermont and working towards getting hostel ready. How did your waterproof socks hold up?

    • @somewhereonthetrail
      @somewhereonthetrail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm definitely leaning more towards a PCT or CDT hike, I just love being out west with the open views and insane mountains. I do have the Long Trail on my list though and have watched several hikes on it. I hope you have your hostel up and running when I get there that would be too cool! I'm sad to report that the waterproof socks (Hypershellz) slowly failed on me, after the first day I wore them my socks were just a little bit damp that night. after I wore them the second time it was clear that they had failed and my socks and feet were getting wet. I finally stopped wearing them because they were just making sure they were going to stay wet without the chance of drying so I didn't wear them the last few days and have already thrown them away. Also, they were still really new, only worn 3 times. Thanks for watching!!

    As you went through the Lusk Creek Wilderness did you stop and check out the Owl Bluff Overlook?

    • @somewhereonthetrail
      @somewhereonthetrail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not stop at the overlook. I remember seeing the cut-off but I wasn't sure how far off trai it was so I skipped it. I missed a couple of good spots on that hike but it seems like no matter what trail I do I find out later that I missed some rrally cool features.
