Great work highlighting this. Having watched so many of your videos it feels like these issues are systemic and even deliberate. You should start calling out the names of these builders in your videos!

I've come across some of these "tradesmen" and their characters match their workmanship.......weak.
They are exactly what these new building sites demand, get the job done as uick as you can and fuck the finish.

I have worked on some of these sites( heating and plumbing engineer.)I am English and qualified to do my work.
Some of the labour are just total chancers, they cant speak English some of them. The agencys they work through
dont care ,just want the money they generate.Even the site supervisors are agency,so when the job goes pear
shaped they just leave before the end and go elsewhere. They dont want quality work ,just get it done quick,
or get sacked. Its all done on price work. How does a person pass the site induction when they cant speak English.
Two "plumbers" from Brazil on one job.Total cowboys didnt have work permits hardly speak English. No qualifications.
    Absolute joke.

    • @ade5691
      @ade5691 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

People accept it because housing in in a criminal state of low supply, that only gets worse as time goes on... and migration does not help...
Building firms treat it too much like a business, accepting gov contracts and bidding on them at the lowest price possible, then willing to cut the corners to maximise profit.
There are a bunch of new build near me that are on the market for 240k each. Small boxes, would be surprised if they are still there in 20 years.

    • @Htrac

I bought a new build off Persimmon and inspected the house after receiving the keys, had over 100 problems they had to come back and fix, for example, they had painted over light switches when painting the walls, sockets were not flush with the wall, rusted fasteners in the window rails, radiators were not level, one was actually drooped so much the corner of it was on the pipe running underneath. Eventually I was compensated with 3% equity of the cost of the house due to me saying I would take it to the next level before finally the ombudsman.

There’s a small development of six farm building conversions around the corner from me. They’ve been there six years now and are just finishing. The standard of work is incredibly high from what I’ve seen and they’re all sold. I’ve spoken on occasions to the builders who are full time employees of the developer. They have nothing but praise for him, enjoy their work and he’s made a good profit on their work.
So it can be done successfully, even with a more costly conversion project.

Internal room walls are made of stud and plaster board not brick
Internal walls use dab and board not rendered
And usually a box for a garden.

They are already sold. That's the problem. Most houses are already fully paid for before they are even finished. I believe some countries have schemes where by some of the money is withheld from the builder until it is satisfactory, maybe that's an option that could be looked at.

Could this all change if a sum of money from the purchase price of the house was withheld from the housebuilder on completion?
It would give them more of an incentive to both complete the build to a decent standard and to encourage them to complete any snags without delays.

    • @JD-wn3cc
      @JD-wn3cc 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

This would be a great idea but the major home builders have far too much sway with legislation and governance, similar to the railways. The tail wags the dog and they decide the level of quality/service to be provided and they get away with it as the demand is always there. The guy doing the videos doesn't like when I say this but whilst his snagging reports are great, when you take them to the developer, more often than not they tell you to do one and if you don't want to complete on the property then go and back out,.as they know there's loads of others lining up wanting to buy, likely with lower expectations than yours.

4:53... it makes sense that basin and radiator have each been installed in the wrong room, the basin in a separate room for hand washing without disturbing the privacy of the toilet user.

nothing about that makes sense, that's just a house designed by someone's cousin.

That would only make sense if it was a public toilet with multiple cubicles.

This is my thinking, but it's kinda funny to see that kind of setup after the 1920s.

The way new builds are managed is only for profit, they don’t care about quality or any of the traders or customers but regular houses are still worth half a million 😱

How am I, a totally non-DIY/Home Improvement guy, supposed to know all of the things to check, site manager sure as shit didn't walk through it with me.
I noticed the back wall to my property is MASSIVELY out of tolerance and has got more of lean that the tower of Pisa.

@@Caluma122 Welcome to the constructioin industry, its not just houses, I've worked on commercial projects for the last 25 years upto 70 million in value and this kind of stuff is just par for the course. The contractors view is to see what they can get away with and fix only what gets picked up. All pride in their work is gone for 90+% of trades people, they just want to get in and get out, who would have thought using the cheapest contractors to do everything would lead to this.....

So why cant this be done before buying the house? Or is the house bought, whilst still being built?

People's attitudes are "gimme gimme gimme, I want a new house.".
They don't want to know how the sausage is made.
I am doing a renovation and you see all the mistakes the previous people did.
Sometimes I just wish I had a "new" house but when you watch videos of new build snaggings it's just the same problems.

I'm not 100% but I think it is as every new build has to be signed off and I would liken it to purchasing a new car where you expect it to be perfect but you don't often know until you start driving it and faults start showing but you are probably more protected buying a car than buying an house.

I can't understand why this is continuing cow boy workmanship and they are getting aware with it wholesale. My daughter bought a Taylor Wimpy new build it was shocking I talked to site manager who basically couldn't give a shit about all the issues. I left a review on trust pilot saying avoid this company like the plague.
It boils me that they throw houses up but no pride in workmanship its a shame we have to accept this as what seems to be standard now.

modern standard.. i was a magic man working on homes just like this, its soul destroying work.. they are built from the cheapest possible materials with easy demolition and max profit being the only consideration.. you wont be able to pass these homes down through generations of your family.. its a tragedy like everything else these days..

My daughter bought a red row new build. The architraves were about 18 to 20 mm above the floor! The carpet fitter even said he couldn’t fit carpets because of it. When I confronted the site manager he said they are cut off site ! So I said well why would you fit them if they are too short and he just shrugged! In the end they glued in small pieces of architrave ! What a joke 😡😡
