    Great advice on tightening bolts at "normal" ride height... I was trying to figure out how to handle that, this video was SUPER HELPFUL! Thank you!

    Why do I find myself holding my breath every time you are using the torque wrench? LOL!
    Nice job!

      The torque does seem excessive.

      I agree with using a torque wrench but I find myself holding my breath when someone is using great force to do some work. Maybe it is because every once in a while while doing such myself. The wrench slipped. Ouch!

    Hey Carl, thanks for sharing mate. I shared a SIGH with you when that back bolt wouldn't play ball! We've all been there but you battled on. You need some knee pads though !!

    Happy 4th
    i always liked the rovers....my father talked me out getting one. lots of them here in ohio are sitting but i think all cars n trucks need work to keep running..
    nice work
    rust is always the enemy.
    i'm getting ready to tear down my ford 4.2 for head gasket replacement. i took out the thermostat last fall when it would over heat then stop a few times. thought that was it. now its doing it again. thinking either water pump or tension pulley n idler pulley is sticking. belt looks good tho. haven't taken it off yet. could be flat spots. radiators not stopped up. heater hoses i can hear when i squeeze.

    Good Idea with the paint for the alignment bolts. I always marked them with a small marker, paint is a way better idea

      Broncocarl92 That sounds realistic. If the rear bolts give me hell, I might just take an angle grinder to them. I'll try heat first. Last question, did you lock the air shocks, or just let them dangle?

    Thanks so much for the info. I am not mechanically inclined at all and I’d like to take it to an Indy who specializes in Discovery 2s. Would a qualified mechanic know not to tighten all the bolts to specs before measuring the proper height like you did in the video? Is that a standard procedure or only applies to air suspension vehicles when replacing the lower control arms? Thanks again.

    • @productreviewspecialist
      @productreviewspecialist ปีที่แล้ว

      I know its an old question but the answer is YES, it is standard procedure, tightening in normal height will set the neutral position for the rubber bushings to have even spring load on them when going up or down...not tightening them in normal height will resullt in a constand flexing of the bushings resulting in prematurely wearing out. SOme vehicles like mercedes require you to install the front tires...lower the vehicle and then torque the bolts....same concept here.

  • @jleeusa
    @jleeusa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Never saw you address the air ride. Is there a setting or something to prevent the air bags/shocks from extending once you undo the bottom of the shock?

    • @Broncocarl92
      @Broncocarl92  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jleeusa No need, there was nothing mentioned in the repair instructions. I suppose as long as you don't switch on the key there shouldn't be any issues. Thanks for watching and the comments.

      Disconnect the battery as with all repairs not requiring the electricity to be on

    • @lifelikeweeds819
      @lifelikeweeds819 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Broncocarl92 The air system can and will attempt to level itself even with the key off. Most of us just take out whatever fuse it is that controls this. Can't remember the number... But you can take out the fuse or disconnect the battery. Usually the fuse is easiest to not bungle anything else up.

  • @productreviewspecialist
    @productreviewspecialist ปีที่แล้ว

    Many of these air suspensions have been converted to conventional coilovers. Ift hats the case, then your "normal ride height" will differ from the manufactureres set height for normal ride. Usually rides a bit higher. If this is the case, just hand tighten the lower controll arm bolts (loose enough to move when vehicle is lowered) put the wheels on and lower the vehicle to the ground. Your control arms will self adjust to a neutral position. Now you can go ahead and torque down the bolts. Not doing this you risk tightening at the wrong height...and if you torque it in the wrong position and then lower your vehicle, it could result in overexerting your bushings with constant static load resulting in premature failure. I work on these all the time and see many European vehicles with failed suspensions due to this error from many many shops in a rush to just get it out the door.

    Hi Carl,
    Thanks for posting this vid! I think I need the same procedure to be done on my LR3 (2008)
    She's making an annoying 'clanking' sound everytime the front wheels hit a small pot hole. Is it possible that only the bushings of the control arms need replacement or do you recommend changing the whole arm in this case?
    Are there any things to do after replacing those arms (like realigning the wheels, or adjustment of the suspension -software?). What about the tierods, should they be replaced also? I am asking because of another video I've seen here on TH-cam ( th-cam.com/video/X5zFuAw4cAQ/w-d-xo.html )
    Thanks for commenting!
    Cheers,
    Andy

    I changed the lower arm from a garage but I think they didn't fix the camber bolt correctly and also its not tightened when it's at the correct raid height.. So now what happens is always the car is adjusting the height.. Could you please advise how to correct it.

    Nice vid. Just replaced rear suspension arms on m Disco 3. Boy, am I stuck right now. The bottom of the shock is about two inches away from where it should be to get the bolt in. Still searching for a solution.
    How much pushing and leverage will they withstand? Two inches is a long way off.
    Should I depressurise it first?

    • @Broncocarl92
      @Broncocarl92  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We Are Big Kids probably not a bad idea to depressurise it

    • @Russh1

      Jack under the shock. 2 inches is nothing, consider that when you put 2.8tonne on it it will settle 2 inches.

    Did you depressurize your air system before readjusting the ride height and tightening everything back up?

    • @JetFire9

      Don't really need to do that. If you watch the video, he measured the distance of the hub to the fender and lifted the suspension to its normal ride height before torqueing.
