Wow!... That was a big shock to be honest mate... I've not tried either of these yet... But i don't think i'll bother now with the Harry Ramsden's Jumbo Fishcakes Gaz... The Farmfoods Extra Large Fishcakes look good... And are fantastic value... I would love a couple of these Farmfoods Extra Large Fishcakes... Served with some Chips... I think the Harry Ramsden's version is trying to represent itself as something like you'd find in your Local Chippy... But obviously missing the mark by a long way... I'm sure deep frying either of these Fishcakes would enhance their overall taste... But also for the price paid too... It's a no brainer really... The Farmfoods version wins hands down... Thanks for the review Gaz... I've got a couple of your videos to catch up on in the next day or two... I'm so glad to hear that your "Good Lady Wife"... Michael Alker our FF stopped selling the Donner meat.I love noodles FF does a Mayflower range of 3 different kinds.I tried them all but the salt and pepper chicken was best only £1.50.
Great review , my own preference would be breadcrumbs on a fishcake so I'm really pleased. Quite a saving too . Thank you for all the brilliant and fun food tests .
The farm foods ones looked quite good and they were excellent value. I always buy M&S fish cakes now. They are the best I've ever had also you can get different fillings besides fish

I like a fishcake like the style of farm foods in a bun lettuce tomato tartare sauce or mushy peas and fishcake in a bun. I buy the Birdseye ones the 4 pack but will try a visit to farm foods when I visit uk in April 😃
Hi, Gareth. Another interesting review. There didn't seem to be a massive difference between the two. Going by looks, you would think the Ramsden fishcake would be superior but just goes to show that you shouldnt judge by looks alone. Haven't had fishcakes in a while. It's put me in the mood now..lol.Keep up the great work. Best wishes from Scotland.
Ever since Harry Ramsden’s were bought up by “ big business “ they have changed so much in quality and standards, not to mention flavour and portion size, that they are no longer worth visiting the outlet’s that the business fell over themselves to open in all sorts of locations, at home and overseas. Their biggest mistake was closing and selling the original site , which was the “biggest chip ‘ole in the world “. The whole establishment was shut down and sold off to the company behind the “Weatherby Whaler “ fish and chips stores. Unfortunately H Ramsdens , are run as franchise outlets selling low quality over priced products by worker’s whose only interest in most locations, is the amount of money in their pockets at the end of the week. And when they started the frozen and tinned version’s of their products I am afraid that quality was the first victim of cuts in standards. I did give them a fair trial when a small franchise opened nearer to where I live, but they just didn’t meet the standards and they didn’t last very long.
@@BaldFoodieGuy yeah I took a look at that one once and I wasn’t impressed, it just looked run down with several areas fenced off, and at 2pm it wasn’t exactly busy. In the past I have had to join a line at the original location just to get takeaway with a separate entrance to eat in.
Initially I thought , oh I would rather pay the extra for Harry Ramsdens , even though we have the Farm Foods ones in the freezer. However when you read out Minced fish , it just was off putting somehow. Think I will stick with Farmfoids or make my own.
I remember an HR near the Manchester United ground, it was good back then, nice fish and chips with a pot of tea. Just a brand name now like Bisto is, those Bisto ready meals are truly horrible
The Farmfoods cake resembles those you used to get in the Chippies in the South of England when I was growing up, which generally seemed to contain a mash of fish, potato and some herb (possibly parsley). The Ramsden one still looks quite "mashy" in the middle, which I find disappointing - when I lived in the North (Yorkshire and Lancashire), the fishcakes served there were also battered rather than crumbed, but they were the size of saucers and contain large flakes of white fish and pieces of potatoes; fantastic value, and delicious - I used to swap between getting these with mushy peas, and getting the regular fish and chips!
If you have two Farmfoods fishcakes to one of the Harry Ramsdens you are still winning moneywise because you get four portions compared to two from each pack.
Nice review gareth not had any of these but I now know which one I would buy the fishcakes that I always have in my freezer are from Iceland 10 breaded cod fishcakes for a pound 10 pence each and they are 41% cod and they are quality 👍👍
Hi Gareth, I personally really like the Harry Ramsden fish cake range, and I can also highly recommend Harry R mushy peas! They are fab tinned mushy peas, far better than Batchelors, in my view. I'm just about to sample M and S brand new luxury 'Signature' 'Our Best Ever' fishcake. Have treated myself to a pack of them in my Ocado shop, will be delivered tomorrow - looking forward to indulging - 👍 😁 Another great video. Nice one, sir! 👍

Another great review pal I haven't been getting any noti on yt lately will have to go back through ur vids these Harry ramsden fishcakes take so good I put them in a brioche roll with a bit of tartar sauce lettuce and tomatoes excellent
When it just says white fish or mixed white fish, it mean it's made using any type of white fish flesh, but if pollock is used it states pollock which is as good as Haddock and just as tasty... but I'm more of a cod fan. But the Harry Ramsden's fish cakes did look good, maybe they would have tasted differently if they had been pan fried. 😋
If it just says 'fish' I would avoid just in case it is Basa, the Vietnamese river fish, with a reputation for contamination. Please tell us what it is!
@@mikeharvey9844 when products say white fish, it usually means hake, flounder, any flatfish and just about anything that's caught in fishing nets and what ever was the off cuts as some food companies just buy whats cheapest to increase profits. Good comparison. I can't eat them myself as I am gluten intolerant but my wife and I never buy anything with palm oil in it. My wife and son have eaten the Harry Ramsden ones and were not that impressed with them.
The farmfood ones have less additives so they might be better for you but they don’t say what kind of fish they used. I recon that they used the trimmings from more than one species of white fish. It’s not something I would buy because I live near the top two fishing ports in Scotland Fraserburgh and Peterhead. That means I can easily get fresh fish landed 6 days of the week.
Keep,up the good work. Fish cakes have ALWAYS been breadcrumbs for heaven sake. And does salt go,with fish or what. Another delight added to my food, guy menu.
Hi Gareth they look scrumptious I think we will be having some of those and thanks for the address 😀 and good to hear your good lady is getting back on her feet 😀 xx
Hi, I just subscribed. Me and my son had Morrisons fishcakes, chips and homemade parsley sauce, the fishcakes were horrible. I am gonna have to try the farmfoods ones. Thankyou for sharing. x
Never a big fan of fishcake . I had that luxury steak pie 🥧 I mentioned the other day from Aldi. Again probably the best tasting steak pie you can eat . Their stunning...the richness of the gravy is unbelievable... definitely a must try !!!
@@BaldFoodieGuy ....I don't think I've seen it tbh. It's an Aldi steak pie for 2/3 ppl it's also available as a chicken pie too. The amount of chicken you get in that pie is off the chart...too much. Both super highly recommend Matey. Keep up the brilliant videos . There a breath of fresh air 👍🏻
Hello again Gareth, here in West Yorkshire a fish cake a.k.a. a fish sandwich consists of a fish fillet sandwiched between large slices of potato which is then dipped in batter and fried. People either ask for sandwich and chips or cake and chips depending where in West Yorkshire they reside. Now that the price of fish and chips has rocketed skywards, it make sense to go for a cheaper option.
Nooooooooooooooo! I was just on my way to bed, but now I'm craving a fishcake! Anyhoo - I haven't got any , so I'm going to have to make do with dreaming about them....... Good night and God bless you and your family, love from Wales! :-) xx
Gareth love fish cakes chips and peas not had for years, always had growing up great memories l think farm foods look tasty l like in breadcrumbs that's the ones we had growing up glad good Lady wife is feeling loads better, ♥️😋😋😋
Never tried the Harry Ramsden stuff, but off shopping tommorrow, where there is a Iceland and a farmfoods near to each other, I may have to do the test myself, but as a single women, the farmfoods ones would probably suit me better
@@BaldFoodieGuy it is quite shocking when the more cheaper fish cake takes much better. Harry Ramsdon’s stuff had never really been well seasoned and tbh the name is what your paying most for
Hi Sir, really like this review.. I had a recommendation for you to try.. from Morrison’s Market food kitchen hot food counter on a Sunday : Sunday Roast Chicken Dinner .. you get half roast chicken with Yorkshire pudding roast vegetables & roast potatoes & cauliflower cheese & broccoli & gravy for £7 it’s great portions and really nice tasting!
I've tried many a fishcake and I honestly believe making your own is the only way to go if ya want decent one! Some chippies have good ones too but usually not!
as you say deep fried or fried will always be better hence its something i always do with fish, sausages and burgers, mind you i oven cooked some burgers after seeing you do it and must say they were lovely. keep it up buddy.
I love salt too. I've just been eating some roast potatoes that I cooked in the air fryer and I sprinkled lots of salt on them before I cooked them. You would think that the Harry ramsdens would contain more fish and better taste, Thank you for doing this review as I was thinking of getting those Harry Ramsdens fishcakes. It just goes to show that the most expensive is not always best.
I have tried both these brands and have to agree with you. Yes, the Harry Ramsden fishcakes have haddock and more fish, but at the end of the day for that price difference you would expect the taste to jump out at you. Sadly it doesn't ~ so another winner winner for dinner! :) Great video once again, thanks.
Great video, you have to try the youngs gastro fishcakes with mushypeas tops from Iceland I enjoyed them.. I like the Harry Ramsden ones as I need to have less salt in my diet been a fit git so mite be why I enjoy um 🤣
ASDA 8 Breaded Cod Fishcakes 400g £1.75 45% minced cod are our goto, but we will give the farmfoods a try as well. About the airfryer when we got ours we sort of followed the guidelines and used a temp probe till we nailed down the temp and times for our airfryer, we normally pull the food 5 - 10 degrees under and allow carryover to finish it depending on the food. I will point out my cousin has the same airfryer and his one can take 45 secconds to 1 minute longer to cook the same food. We tested it side by side because they where using our timings an setting and getting different results. I assume the guides temps and times are on the high side to avoid getting sued for whatever reasons lawyers can drem up, so use a temp probe and common sense.
M&S Salmon fishcakes two for £1.80 are nice😋 I miss savory rissoles😋 ASDA 4 frozen cod fishcakes £3.00 get a good write up....do contain some Pollock though, crafty!😊
Have you notice they keep making food items smaller and smaller and calling them "jumbo" /"giant". Notice it with burgers and biscuits and chocolate. This is another example where make it smaller and put it in big packet and call it" jumbo", I have tried the Iceland fishcake and Fish Fingers and like them both.
Fish cakes look like the chip shop ones 👍🏻… the jumbo haddock fish cakes look “spot on” 😉… put them in a crusty roll sauce .. whatever sauces and .. delish 🤤
Sainsburys used to make a fantastic Fishcake, then they changed it, less potato, very sparse fish and the coating was different, such a shame, I feel they use it as a loss leader, get you in buying, then change it for a cheaper option.
Instead of deep fried I sometimes coat stuff like this in oil, you can use the spray things but use plenty of it. I cook things for a while and then put them in a bowl that most closely matches the size of them, drizzle oil on and turn it over to get both sides. They still are going to have far less oil than deep fried, but they often come out way better. Be good to see some side by side comparisons, like how you did oven vs microwave vs airfryer in the past -usually sticking to the instructions. But it would be good to see them trying to be made more like takeaways, which will have more added oil & salt, I think the makers are scared as they have to declare the ingredients on the pack!
being a meggie (born in cleethorpes) i have been spoilt with grimsby fish all my life. home made fishcakes made with haddock fillet, mash, onion and parsley are the best you will ever eat. no need for breadcrumbs or batter, just chips, pickled onions, mushy peas and tom ketchup xxx

The farmfood ones have less additives so they might be better for you but they don’t say what kind of fish they used. I recon that they used the trimmings from more than one species of white fish. It’s not something I would buy because I live near the top two fishing ports in Scotland Fraserburgh and Peterhead. That means I can easily get fresh fish landed 6 days of the week.
cheers pal, yes minced white fish could be anything.
Lucky you 😋
Just shows you you don’t have to pay top money for the best named , I’m not a great lover of fish cakes though . As always great review Mr G😜👍🤩
Thanks for watching Karen cheers x
Interesting as taste is must important
Keep,up the good work. Fish cakes have ALWAYS been breadcrumbs for heaven sake. And does salt go,with fish or what. Another delight added to my food, guy menu.
You need to be sponsored by Iceland on there adverts? Any of those fish cakes between a cob/barm/roll/sandwich with some vinegar deffo 10/10 😃
haha cheers
🏴👏 great honest review Mate, you got to tell it how it is ! 👏🏴

@@BaldFoodieGuy we will we will let you know 😋
Great review, to be honest, just from the pictures on the box I would not have got the farm foods
Enjoyable video as always ☺ 👍
Thank you 😁
Wow looking nice mate
thanks 😊
Love to see ya using the ninja.☺️
More to come!
I like fishcakes, especially the chip shop sort. But the ones I got, a bag of 12 or something from Tesco were tiny, so that one you've got is jumbo 😆
cheers pal.
I have just bought some of the farmfoods fishcakes on your recommendation.I look forwards to trying them.
Enjoy pal
@@BaldFoodieGuy Tried 2 of the fishcakes last night. They were spot on.
Cheers pal 😋👍👍
I still love the Birds Eye pack of four one's. Still taste the same as they did years ago.
Hi, I just subscribed. Me and my son had Morrisons fishcakes, chips and homemade parsley sauce, the fishcakes were horrible. I am gonna have to try the farmfoods ones. Thankyou for sharing. x
Thanks for subbing! your welcome. Im going live tonight at 8 please drop in.
Another great video. Unfortunately don't have a Farm Foods or would have tried them.xx
Sorry to hear that Janice x
Usually a lot of the cheaper ones have filling that’s like mush. I like the Asda ones with chips and tomato sauce.
sound good Rob ive not had the Asda ones.
Never a big fan of fishcake .
I had that luxury steak pie 🥧 I mentioned the other day from Aldi.
Again probably the best tasting steak pie you can eat . Their stunning...the richness of the gravy is unbelievable... definitely a must try !!!
cheers Rob i dont think ive had that one will check my pie playlist.
Now that the price of fish and chips has rocketed skywards, it make sense to go for a cheaper option.
hello david
Nooooooooooooooo! I was just on my way to bed, but now I'm craving a fishcake!
Anyhoo - I haven't got any , so I'm going to have to make do with dreaming about them.......
Good night and God bless you and your family, love from Wales! :-) xx
Sorry! lol xx
Gareth love fish cakes chips and peas not had for years, always had growing up great memories l think farm foods look tasty l like in breadcrumbs that's the ones we had growing up glad good Lady wife is feeling loads better, ♥️😋😋😋
cheers Kim yes back to normal now thankyou Kim xx
mum said we'd try the farmfood ones now cheers
Never tried the Harry Ramsden stuff, but off shopping tommorrow, where there is a Iceland and a farmfoods near to each other, I may have to do the test myself, but as a single women, the farmfoods ones would probably suit me better
yes go for it Sophie
@@BaldFoodieGuy it is quite shocking when the more cheaper fish cake takes much better. Harry Ramsdon’s stuff had never really been well seasoned and tbh the name is what your paying most for
My mum is a single parent, so as a kid we lived on a tight budget, so I’m used to the economy ranges, and still mainly stick to them
Hi Sir, really like this review.. I had a recommendation for you to try.. from Morrison’s Market food kitchen hot food counter on a Sunday : Sunday Roast Chicken Dinner .. you get half roast chicken with Yorkshire pudding roast vegetables & roast potatoes & cauliflower cheese & broccoli & gravy for £7 it’s great portions and really nice tasting!
sounds great thanks 😊
Wow that’s impressive .
reconstituted thats easy for you to say ! cheers gareth !
haha cheers William
Nice with a drop of vinegar and ketchup yum 😋
I've tried many a fishcake and I honestly believe making your own is the only way to go if ya want decent one! Some chippies have good ones too but usually not!
yes Jay making your own is best.
You should try the Aldi melt in the middle fishcakes. We love the salmon ones especially
yes i should Matt cheers.
I use the farm food jumbo fish cakes they're exactly the same as you get at your local chip shop only bigger.
yes so tasty
Mmmm love fishcakes x
as you say deep fried or fried will always be better hence its something i always do with fish, sausages and burgers, mind you i oven cooked some burgers after seeing you do it and must say they were lovely. keep it up buddy.
cheers Ian, will do.
Hope you don’t forget to do the Vesta chow mien and Vesta beef mate ………great vlog again
in Farmfoods will try and remember cheers
We like the farmoods fishcakes .we have a box in the freezer now . Good valve for money .hubby's happy with them ..
thanks 😊 yes tasty ones these.
Hey Gareth!!!!! 🐟 🐟 🍷 🍷
Spot on,you don't need to pay a fortune for a fish cake
I love salt too.
I've just been eating some roast potatoes that I cooked in the air fryer and I sprinkled lots of salt on them before I cooked them.
You would think that the Harry ramsdens would contain more fish and better taste,
Thank you for doing this review as I was thinking of getting those Harry Ramsdens fishcakes. It just goes to show that the most expensive is not always best.
thanks yes love salt lol
I have tried both these brands and have to agree with you. Yes, the Harry Ramsden fishcakes have haddock and more fish, but at the end of the day for that price difference you would expect the taste to jump out at you. Sadly it doesn't ~ so another winner winner for dinner! :) Great video once again, thanks.
thanks very much, much appreciated 👍
Great video, you have to try the youngs gastro fishcakes with mushypeas tops from Iceland I enjoyed them.. I like the Harry Ramsden ones as I need to have less salt in my diet been a fit git so mite be why I enjoy um 🤣
cheers pal
My favorite fish cakes are youngs jumbo fish cakes they are so nice
Thanks for the story and tips
Haven't had fishcake for years might have to give them a try
treat yourself lol
M&S Salmon fishcakes two for £1.80 are nice😋 I miss savory rissoles😋 ASDA 4 frozen cod fishcakes £3.00 get a good write up....do contain some Pollock though, crafty!😊
thanks 😊
I was going to ask you to try them Gareth Harry Ramsden 😂😂thanks Gareth x👍🏴
cheers Frances no problem xx
Have you notice they keep making food items smaller and smaller and calling them "jumbo" /"giant". Notice it with burgers and biscuits and chocolate. This is another example where make it smaller and put it in big packet and call it" jumbo", I have tried the Iceland fishcake and Fish Fingers and like them both.
yes got the iceland fish cakes they are really small compared to these.
👍
Fish cakes look like the chip shop ones 👍🏻… the jumbo haddock fish cakes look “spot on” 😉… put them in a crusty roll sauce .. whatever sauces and .. delish 🤤
yes i had mine in a bun, very tasty and salad cream lol
@@BaldFoodieGuy ye to right gaz can’t beat a bit of salad cream 👍🏻✅ well played👌🏻
Sainsburys used to make a fantastic Fishcake, then they changed it, less potato, very sparse fish and the coating was different, such a shame, I feel they use it as a loss leader, get you in buying, then change it for a cheaper option.
I suppose there is bound to be more flavour in a mixture of fish? I will definitely give those a try.
Hope you enjoy
Instead of deep fried I sometimes coat stuff like this in oil, you can use the spray things but use plenty of it. I cook things for a while and then put them in a bowl that most closely matches the size of them, drizzle oil on and turn it over to get both sides. They still are going to have far less oil than deep fried, but they often come out way better.
Be good to see some side by side comparisons, like how you did oven vs microwave vs airfryer in the past -usually sticking to the instructions. But it would be good to see them trying to be made more like takeaways, which will have more added oil & salt, I think the makers are scared as they have to declare the ingredients on the pack!
cheers Dan thanks 😊
