    So facial hair speeds you up but leg hair slows you down. I'm suspicious, is all this leg shaving just a fetish ?

    I use an epilator. If you have a high pain threshold than it's pretty good. Pays for itself when compared to waxing and lasts as long without having to leave house. Also you can manage your own pain. The downside is it hurts ALOT so you definitely need to man up every 3 or 4 weeks.

  • @HartFalleon
    @HartFalleon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah I won't be doing waxing anytime soon. It's much easier and less painful in my opinion to just trim the stubble down with an electric trimmer and then shave with a razer. Let it grow back out a little and repeat that process.

  • @bernardibrahim
    @bernardibrahim 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    waxing costs about $25 here, it lasts up to 2 months until fine hair starts to show. I settled to shave eventually just to save the trip, although it causes me rashes and ingrown hair. In the end though I just kinda trim them off with this trimmer razor, it leaves very short hair (which according to Mike Burrows in a video is the most aero situation, I guess) but I am completely free from the irritation and the ingrown hair (which by the way terrifies me a lot). Nice video nonetheless, Neal!

    I'm a spanish cyclist and in favour of the wax system, 20€ each month really near my house isn't that much expensive, so for me better waxing than shaving!!! The more you wax your legs longer is the time to be grown again... the opposite of shaving (the more you shave, less will be the time to be grown, being the hair stronger and thicker...
    LOVE GCN!!!

    Why shave? I crashed while MTB-ing XC. Landed on my right knee, deep cut, had to wrap bandages around my knee and they kept dropping, if I didn't have any hair I would just stick a surgical bandage which has glue and sticks to skin.
    Simple stuff. Those surgical stick-on bandages are waterproof, regular ones are not, so I had to wrap plastic bag around my knee when I went for a shower using an electrical tape.

    Been waxing for years and one of the benifits of waxing got missed here - shaving grows back rough scratchy but with wax it is only soft "baby hairs" - that's and important detail for your significant other. If you like your wife go with waxing....if you'd prefer a bit of distance between you then it's shaving all the way.

  • @MauricioAlsinaLee
    @MauricioAlsinaLee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amazing! Waxing, as shaving, gets easier with the years, and you can also do it at home (I know women that do it); but I'll keep shaving (it's my Saturday's ritual or something like that). Anyway, thanks for your bravery, soldier!

  • @RabidMortal1
    @RabidMortal1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    CONVENIENCE and TIME COMMIT are very individual measures--shaving I do @ home and it takes only a few minutes to touch up every few days. You didn't say how long you were @ the salon but I'm guessing that's easily an hour for both legs. Then add in the time it takes out of the day for some of us to actually even to get TO a salon and I'm convinced that (for me) the numbers presented here are backwards for these two categories... But thanks for taking u through your pain :)

    My wife says that with waxing, if you get all 3 "hair cycles/stages" of growth, then your legs will stay silky smooth for a whole race season.... that's dependant on getting waxed after you let your hair grow out 3 times (so through the winter?) -but any hair that grows back after, is a new follicle (the old ones being destroyed by waxing) so they'll be thin and mostly unnoticeable....
    The question is... would you put up with the pain and cost 3 times? -
    Pain is beauty...uh...aero...?

    The cost of waxing changes from salon to salon as I can get both legs done for $25 also home waxing is an option, also there is dilapidation creams which offer smoother results than shaving withing out the pain of waxing.

    Me being a recreational bike rider, and not competitive, I'll keep my legs hairy. Besides if my friends saw my legs hairless, they'd make fun of me. I've got pretty hairy legs, they'd notice right away.

    you guys should use an epilator.. does the same thing as waxing but you can do it at home and once you pay around £70 for an epilator it'll last you years. i highly recommend!

  • @exedanni
    @exedanni 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I epliate. All the benefits of waxing, but with just the one off cost of the epilator itself. Very easy to 'touch up' when needed, once every 2 weeks generally, and even then the hairs have grown back so fine you can barely see them, I epilate up to the short line then use clippers on the rest.
    I found shaving quite expensive as you go through razor blades, shaving cream, balm etc. And you are almost in constant need of a touch up with unsightly stubble. And very easy to nick the leg resulting in damage.
    Epilation wins - no contest.

    • @ALIENdrifter66
      @ALIENdrifter66 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Doe where can i see that?. I don't think it has that aerodinamical advantage because the hair is smoth and it makes air keep closer to the back part of you legs and it's more or less compensated with the little extra drag created in the front part. Also if it's too good why don't they also shave their arms? They could be between 10-15 seconds faster in those 40km

    • @ALIENdrifter66
      @ALIENdrifter66 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Naude looks like you don't accept humans have hair, it also protects you skin from the sun and many hairsking problems

  • @TheWaxChainFanClub
    @TheWaxChainFanClub 9 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    You know, I don't have to get anywhere fast enough to justify removing hair from my legs, for all the time that extra aerodynamics will save me. In fact, I'd spend more time having to explain to everyone I know why I have no leg hair. Then there's the having to look myself in the eye, shaking my head, wondering what has become of me. Nah, I'll keep the hair.

      Michael McDermott ditto... ;-)

    • @vpjansen1
      @vpjansen1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the number one reason for shaving is not aerodynamics, but rather the fact that shaved legs heal quicker than unshaved when the crash comes and you get the road rash and sores.

    • @TheWaxChainFanClub
      @TheWaxChainFanClub 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @lukeh3020
      @lukeh3020 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael McDermott There is no aerodynamic reason. Shaved legs are not faster. These days it's mostly just for tradition, vanity, and for easy treatment of road rash.

    "depending on your own level of fuzziness, you could spend very little or a whole lot of time and money to get smooth, hairless skin. Personally, I'm a big fan of razors and a 99-cent can of men's shaving cream and I've never resorted to more extreme measures like waxing, lasers, or electrolysis. In fact, my method has worked so well for me that nothing has changed since my first time picking up a razor at age 12." Seventeen Magazine.

  • @Pronellyllon
    @Pronellyllon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I personally think he came to the conclusion too fast. Waxing takes about 6 weeks before you start waxing again. That is 25% longer than what he mentioned, so that does reduce the costs. Though shaving is still cheaper. Another downside of the waxing is that you need to grow your hairs a little bit before you're able to wax again. So you will have periods when you have hair growing and periods when it is really super smooth

  • @aDotFromTheFuture
    @aDotFromTheFuture 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So shaving your hair, beard or arms does nothing, but shaving the hair on your legs makes all the difference? If you're a pro, I can maybe understand (although not really), but for a person who's not racing or just doing small races, I really don't see the point in shaving your legs...

      Mike Williams This is one of those cases where some people have no pain threshold at all. As a woman if you think waxing or epilation hurts try eyebrow plucking, or electrolysis. I've used the same Philips epilator on my legs for years, and it hurt a bit the first couple of times but now I barely notice it (possibly because the hairs are finer).

    I feel the system used is floored and does not explain enough details,
    Did you shave once? or every day? what is the cost of razors and cream/gel, and moisturizer, how long does a wax take, how long does shaving take? which one gave more in growing hairs? how long do razors last for?
    in short cost of shaving daily to waxing monthly
    and time taken to shave vs time taken to wax ( shaving is convenient over waxing as you can shave at home any time of day or night but waxing you would have to book an appointment etc)

    I am disappointed you did not also test epilation (but maybe you plan to do so?). The slow and painful version of waxing, where you mechanically pull out hair by hair, making you feel like a feather-stripped chicken in the end. It is painful but HTFU. If women do it all the time, so can you (?) (not implying that women can't be tougher or stronger than men!). I would love to see you guys try it out, especially Matt. :) :)

      When you shave with good soap + cream + good shaver+ every week, is not cheaper than waxing that lasts 4-5 weeks...

    I just don't see why you would do this. Why do so many pros have beards if hair removal makes such a difference?

    With a high value being both positive and negative, determining the winner with a cummulativev score is pretty inaccurate unless you invert the values. Kind of a rookie mistake in chart making.
    Nitpicking aside, i rarely shave my legs, but when i do, it's more out of self-consciousness rather than aero/fitting in/whatever you people do it for. I just don't like being hairy, period.

      alexvpaq Im no expert, but try getting some sort of ingrown treatment. They usually stop them from getting too bad, but I personally don't have problems with them so Im not sure how miracle like they really are.

      Pluck them out with tweezers, I get them sometimes, just be sure to get the entire hair strand to the root out vs just breaking a piece off

    Shaving is easy, but remember not to copy how women do it, or how we shave our faces. Shave dry, as this will prevent softening of the skin, rashes and cuts. Legs are a fairly flat skin surfaces without any of the complexities of a face of vagina, so a simple dry shave is adequate and quicker.

    This is not really science ;-) ... I think that a hairless leg is useful for pro cyclists for massages and frequent port of bandages. Is there any other advantage for an amateur to shave or wax ?

    So, waxing is painful, but it's healthier. Shaving is less painful, but it's not as healthy as waxing.
