Reminds me of my college music professor who would bring in CD plastic covers with the insert papers and rant to the class about all the wrong information printed on them. It was pretty eye opening how much flat out wrong/incorrect information gets printed by album/artist companies as factual authoritative information.

I’m currently learning the complete Inventions & Sinfonias and have the Alfred edition. I actually find all of the footnotes and editorial markings to be interesting, as options to consider. However, having listened to numerous recordings of these works, I know not to take Palmer’s pontificating too seriously.

I totally disagree, I have the Alfred French suites but mostly play the 48 preludes and fugues using the Alfred edition. Very well researched, all the differences between the various manuscripts shown, not just ornaments but discrepancy of note pitches as well. I also have the Tovey and the Czerny (which is a bit dodgy), the Alfred ones are the best and I have read all the foot notes.The Alfred Beethoven piano sonatas editions are very good as well. Urtext is a myth, how can they say that their edition is the definitive one with so many manuscript sources.

I am not claiming that Urtexts are "definitive" editions. I'm just saying that there is way too much irrelevant information in most Alfred editions like these two Bach books I talk about. Beginner and intermediate piano students don't care about manuscript variants and footnote after footnote explaining these things. Find a concert pianist who uses or endorses Alfred editions. They don't exist because Alfred dumbs down its editions disguising themselves to be "definitive scholarly" editions. Real concert pianists don't fall for this trick because they see through Alfred's BS.
