    Brings back memories of that time my cousin (a doctor) and I accompanied my aunt to the ER for a severe UTI and while waiting for about six hours my cousin started chatting with the lady sitting next to us, heard what she came for, quietly stood up, went to the desk and she told the nurse "that woman has been having a heart attack for a while now". Fun fact: the pain for a heart attack for afab people is usually in the jaw area, but for amab it’s actually where the ‘normal’ place is, that’s why a lot of afab people mistake their heart attacks for other things or people don’t believe them!

    Hey just to say... I've went to the ER a few times thinking there was something wrong with my heart during panic attacks. Like I legit thought I was having a heart attack. I felt like I was having palpitations and also felt a tightness in my chest along with feeling light headed. It was so scary. I have panic disorder, it's not fun at all. Panic attacks can mimic symptoms of a heart attack. I seem to be in a state of anxiety more than not. I'm working on it with my doctor and counselor. While I'm sure this can be "annoying" to ER physician's and staff, and may take up time that they feel is pointless, as a patient in an active panic attack you feel that there's truly something wrong. Be kind and compassionate, because every patient deserves it.

    I legit thought I was dying last night and had my husband drive me to the ER. Felt like I was losing consciousness, couldn't breathe, losing feeling in my limbs and face, chest pain so intense I thought I was having a heart attack and felt pain induced nausea. Shaking like a leaf. Turns out it was just a severe panic attack. How embarrassing 😰 they were very kind about it and reassured me though. Prescribed me antianxiety meds and referred me to a doctor to treat my anxiety.

    • @ghostratsarah
      @ghostratsarah 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not medical advice, but that sounds like a classic POTS attack. They're almost always misdiagnosed as anxiety and panic attacks, even mental breakdowns. But they are way easier to treat. POTS is cause by blood vessels not constricting properly, so your pulse and blood pressure get confused. Pulse shoots up and is unstable, while BP usually drops. It's not dangerous, unless you like, pass out from one while crossing the street.
      Again, not a doctor, but that's a common scenario for people who have undiagnosed POTS.
      A tilt Table Test is the only way to diagnose and rule them out. If you heavily suspect you have it, demand that test, and only accept that test.
      It's currently considered rare, because of under and misdiagnosis, but it's believe to be a very common ailment.

      @MA-zg2pz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      God, I have done the exact same thing at least 3 times at the ER! None of the drs told me it was a panic attack. Because I was just discharged for post partum pre-eclampsia the week prior. They just kept me for ages doing tests and then let me go. It wasn’t until the 3rd time that a nurse gently told me this is probably a panic attack. I have felt so much embarrassment and shame ever since. Knowing everyone was aware I wasn’t dying but my brain was like R.I.P.

    • @MA-zg2pz
      @MA-zg2pz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ghostratsarah I wouldn’t be so sure to assume that they didn’t test for that. ER doctors are not perfect, but with a team, there is usually lots of thorough cross examination.

    • @ghostratsarah

      @@MA-zg2pz the test for it takes a long time to get, ERs don't do them. And most doctors have never even heard of the disorder, despite how common it is. Why it goes undiagnosed. You need a referral from a primary care provider or neuro/cardio/rheumatologist to get the test, and then find somewhere that has the equipment for it. Not many places do. The test itself is painful, grueling, and takes a long time to complete. It has to be performed by a highly trained specialist, one who wouldn't be working emergency or on demand.
      I have never heard of a case where a patient was ever suggested they might have the disorder, while in the ER.

    In December of 2017, I started having chest pain that felt like my heart was being squeezed. At first I chalked up the pain to breathing in cold air. It was a brutally cold month. One night driving to work the pain went from mild to excruciating. I arrived at work and told them I was having a heart attack. My boss was a CNA so she gave me an aspirin and clocked my heart at 150 bpm. The EMT on the other hand was rude and comdescing. He told me: oh honey, you're just have a little old panic attack, your EKG and blood pressure are normal. Totally humiliated me. They did the blood test for a heart attack at the hospital, turns out, I did have a heart attack due to an 80 percent blockage. Then there’s the patient who come in with family. As soon as the curtain closes around their bed it’s party time! As I approached I could hear loud laughing that instantly disappeared when I announced myself and opened the curtain only to find mournful family surrounding a now moaning patient, good times… edit: I’m talking about the scammers, NOT people in true distress (rather real or not)! @@JennLonhon I can see how those questions would help focus the mind, and get answers. But here Steveio is just asking what it feels like. So... Just think if a person was panicking, they might not be in a good place to describe the feeling.
      The last time I had to describe pain to a doctor, apparently I did it wrong. The pain was radiating to my back, and I was feeling it most intensely in the middle of my back. But describing it as pain in my back meant my gallstones were almost completely missed. Specific step-by-step questions might have been more helpful for me too.

      I went in for "severe chest pain" i was asked what it felt like.
      I replied, "like a heart attack is described but zi don't think it's a heart attack. There's no arm pain"
      they replied with, "can you describe the pain?"
      And I did, so they took me for a heart test.
      The result was basically, not a heart attack but something did happen and as it's unclear and you have severe anxiety in your chart it was probably a panic attack.
      I think they're probably right. But those things are scary and painful.

    Honey, I had gone through a heart surgery because my valve was "leaking", so to say... And to this day, whenever I feel like my chest hurts and some sort of "crumbling" inside, I'd tell myself, while gasping for air like literally, "IS IT what heart attack feels like?" At that condition, I cannot explain what I was feeling because I was too busy feeling the pain and I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW whether or not I was having a heart attack, minding my history of the surgery before. If anyone out here is just like "the patient" in this video and can't describe and tell the ER, "I am having a heart attack" and can still breathe "quite well" and speak about it, well... You're lucky the ER doesn't choose to rush you under defibrillators.

      Sounds a whole lot like a panic attack, my friend. It happens to me for basically no reason. I'm deliberating Ragu or Prego with dinner, and next thing I know, there's an elephant on my chest. Pulse ox is sitting at 98%, but it feels like I have no air. Heart is basically coming through my chest and the whole left side of my body goes numb. My consciousness seems to be crumbling. Blood pressure is alternately very low and then very high. Feels... like a heart attack. Nope. Panic attack. Quite different from an anxiety attack, because there's no actual *cause* -- I'm never in a stressful situation when it happens. My body just goes full-on fight or flight. There is another thing called a panic attack that has similar symptoms. I'm not exactly sure on the specifics but, if you were to have a heart attack, your vitals will reflect that. Heartburn is a major symptom of a heart attack, especially in women. Women's heart attacks usually go undetected, until it's too late, because they don't have "classic" presentations. They usually get what is called a "silent heart attack". They rarely show up on the default test, too. But many doctors still completely overlook this.
      Women get heartburn, sudden anxiety, sweating, fatigue, nausea, headache, backache, neck pain, jaw pain, confusion, low BP, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, and other generalized symptoms you wouldn't think of- in varying combinations. It can present as any combo of the above, none are inherently hand-in-hand, or a woman can have only one (or none). They often don't have any chest pain, and there is a type that commonly effects thin, young, and relatively healthy women, making it even more difficult to be taken seriously.
      They are typically diagnosed with anxiety and indigestion, then shooed out of the ER with a scarlet letter for future ER visits, marking them with female hysteria.
      My mother died of one, at the age of 38. Never say a heart attack scare is "just heartburn", because that is a symptom.

      Oof. That sucks. You really do the smart thing by getting multiple opinions. Especially in women, it's all too common to not be taken seriously. Did you know the word "hysteria" comes from the greek word for the uterus? Takes me a lot of self control not to be a Google doctor, because I've had so many similar situations. I'm lucky that my local clinic and hospital were converted into an long distance arm of UW's medical campus. The quality of care and drive to investigate has improved exponentially. I finally got diagnosed with a long page of disabilities, as soon as the program was implemented. After begging for years to see a rheumatologist, I was allowed to see one. He ordered 16 blood tests in one day, and a hoard of other types.

      Same, I had what the doctors presume was an infection, but I basically couldn't breathe properly, could barely do any movement without losing my breath, chest felt tight for an entire week. It was pretty bad, had to go to the ER type of bad

    Costrochondroitis: presents with "heart-attack like pain," absolutely crushing chest pain that radiates into your back, shoulder & upper arm. Put you on the floor pain. Difficulty breathing & nothing helps. (Ps. That was blown off for 2yrs at my local ED as "reflux" or a "panic attack." You know; from logical situations like sitting on the couch laughing at a movie & drinking water.)

    I love the moment where you decide how long his explanation of symptoms would take vs the time it would take to start and IV, draw blood and get an EKG. The latter is faster!

    I've done this. When I first started having panic attacks my mind would switch to "hey you're having a heart attack". I went to the hospital and the nurse was so kind. She gave me a shot to help calm me down (my heart was was around 190bpm) and talked to me about severe anxiety. It has been four years and I still have the occasionally panic attack, but now I know how to calm myself down.
