17:18 As a manga reader, And someone who has lived in Japan: this ain't about rent. The mom either owed a debt and they were loan sharks or she was a prostitute and they were her pimps. The money she took out to give the kid a good birthday, with a dress and a cake, are what caused those pieces of shit to hurt her and take the kid. She came up short. Also the last scene where she danced against the reflection of the sky was on the rooftop, and she jumped off.
The bits that seem obvious to me: Before she got pregnant she was a ballerina. At one point we see the little girl in ballet shoes that are too big for her, those are likely her mother's. After, she didn't really have any skills to support her daughter so she did whatever job she could, including sex work. That's where we start with the timer and the money on the nightstand. She has a financial obligation to these people and she is short because she bought that dress for her daughter. It's not explicitly stated anywhere who those debt collectors were, but it's likely they were yakuza and collecting either from a loan they gave her or from her night's work, or the night's work was part of the compensation required. They took her child away and left her for dead. Heavy blood loss and hopelessness took over. She was dancing across the roof of a building before she took a dive off. It's crystal clear in the manga. Censors in Japan likely required that to be implicit instead of explicit. It is a lot clearer in the manga to me that the little girl didn't survive either. Aira saw a spirit, not a living woman. In a lot of cultures all over the world, including our own (thinking US, not drilling down deeper than that), there is a belief that the very old, the very young and the very ill are able to see spirits. That's probably why Aira could see her when she was little and then didn't really see much again until she found the errant teste.
@tobototoki Don't know off the top of my head but I believe this story is chapters 16 and 17 or somewhere around there. Might be worth a look. Careful though, you might want to keep reading.
That's what makes dandadan good. They can pull of any type of genre romance comedy Action and sad tearful moments like this, and this One of the least sad backstory story too there are gonna be 2 o 3 backstories that are gonna rip your Heart out fr😂
Ive been watching several reactions to the episode, cried for all of them, but your vid is the first one ive laughed at. Calling out the bet and being mistaken was a nice break in all this. Thanks 😅 I haven't read the manga but the general consensus around the 'tube is the mom was working multiple jobs. Also selling her body. The men were probably yakuza. Somehow they find the money she has set aside for her daughter......
8:00 : She take money from what she had to give to someone (Yakuza maybe or someone else) for the dress but for that, she gonna get her ass kicked hard and her daughter gonna be taken. She made multiple jobs even s*x worker for herself and her daughter. 9:40 : It's a little bit censored for many reason (show for teenagers , pb of su*cides in Japan etc..) but she jumped of a building after dancing. In the Manga, we saw clearly the Mom jumping. We just saw in the Anime, the lights of the city for making the difference with the stars and we heard the crush of the body/head on the ground at the end. That's why, when she became a ghost, she didn't remember who she has to protect. Then she mixed her memory with the name of the little girl Aria (Who could see ghost because she's a little child).
