      Thanks. Sadly, the original was now covered in ink. I’m just about to post a similar video but using value for local colour rather than shade and shadow as here. 😀

    Imo it already looked amazing, but adding tonal value with those markers completely elevated the whole piece!
    Youve got my hands itching to draw, thank you so much for sharing

    Thanks - that was fun to watch. I think this is my favorite drawing I've seen you do thus far. Very interesting the way the lines pull your eyes. I think you did a great job of showing how to handle the dark walkway (it reads better and adds a subtle dimensionality by not fully highlighting the forward figure completely, imo)!

      Thanks. I’m glad you like it. It’s an amazing little structure. I’ve only seen photos inside. Apparently the Emperor only used it once. 😀

    Big improvement! I do agree about the figures-just having a few of them lighter would give more of a sense of movement and life.
    I do think the values on the left side of the tracks should be a bit darker. Not quite as dark as the right side, but I think the dark-light-dark pattern in the reference is one of the things that makes it interesting, so it’d be worthwhile to make sure that comes through in the drawing.
    Finally, I think you did the right thing with the “framed” center of the drawing. It draws the eye more and makes for a more interesting drawing.

      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your thoughts. I thought something similar about the values on the left side when I looked at it again later. Perspective is not just in architecture. 😀

    I found you recently and having a blast. Since you grant permission, I have had a go at copying your work, looking for shapes rather than trying to match your work perfectly. Some of it has turned out nicely while some looks as though it was done by a third grader. Nothing against young artists! Secondly, I'm not sure where the community page is located. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent.

      Welcome aboard my channel Brad. I think you will learn more , in the long term, using the photo references I post rather my actual drawings. At best, that will teach you to copy well. But I’m sure you would really prefer to draw your own original drawings. My teacher is aimed at that end. It will be harder at first, but it will learn then to do it. But have fun whatever you do. 😀

    Another great video, Stephen! Coming from a graphite heavy background, ink and wash is still a new area for me. Seeing how you shade this way is interesting and I look forward to trying it out.

    • @stephentraversart

      It’s ink, but not wash Daniel. Wash is liquid on the paper with a brush. I’ve never really used it, and the while the paper I use can take it, it’s smoothish surface is not ideal I don’t think. But I have watercolour paper etc all ready. I just need the courage and time to start!😀

      @Stephen Travers Art Right. I called the alcohol markers the wash. I have also been watching line & wash projects and mashed techniques together. Oops. Still, I am learning and having fun. Thanks!

    Hi Steven. Really appreciate this video and am hoping to pick up a set of these neutral markers 👍. My query is when layering them is there a risk of saturating the paper? There must be a limit? On Bristol paper Vs cartridge for example

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use 290 gsm drawing cartridge. (Art Tec). And while parts of the market line work can be seen on the back of the paper, I don’t think it’s ever bled onto the paper beneath. Give it a go and see. 😀

      Thanks for the reply, think it highlights a common issue you come to often in your videos.....fear of messing up the work before you've even started 😂.

    Amazing as always. The white sky is really grabbing my attention. I’d probably kill this piece by filling in the sky.

    • @Sherlock2022
      @Sherlock2022 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was about to ask why the sky had been left, but I guess it’s so easy to spoil it.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I seldom do anything with the sky. Perhaps because it’s so often empty in Australia anyway. 😀

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not afraid of spoiling it, but I would have to be convinced I was adding something of value to it. 😀

    Sir I'm from India and I love your art work❤️. Sir can you tell me which paper and marker are you using?

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I use Copic Multiliners for the line work, and Copic Sketchmarkers for the tone, using the brush end, not the chisel end. I use Neutral Grey colour for the tone, usually 4-6 tones each drawing. The markers are refillable and the pens can have their ink cartridges and nibs replaced. My paper is a 290gsm drawing cartridge, Art Tec, an Australian brand made of German paper. 😀

    Love your videos. You can adjust the tonal range to lighter using a blender pen. The name blender is quite misleading. If you decide to test it out, try it on scrap paper first.
