Hiking the Bass Lake Trail with Ruby | Fall Hike

- On Friday, October 13, I decided to spend my birthday hiking the 5.25 mile Bass Lake Trail with Ruby. The Bass Lake Trail is actually a network of trails around (and through) the formerly much larger Bass Lake which now includes Dry Lake and Little Dry Lake.
Historical Bass Lake was located between High and Low Lakes. There was a large, natural dam of glacial gravel between Bass Lake and Low Lake with a 60 ft drop between the two lakes. During the logging days, a sluiceway was dug so logs could be floated down to Low Lake. In the spring of 1925, the sluiceway and dam washed out, creating a 250 ft wide gorge and Bass Lake was lowered some 55 ft in about 10 hours, leaving behind the current Bass Lake -- about 1/2 the size of the original -- as well as Dry and Little Dry Lakes and Dry Falls.

What a great hike thank you for taking us along for your birthday. Hi Ruby.
My pleasure! Ruby says "arf, bark-woof" which I think means "Hi Karen!" ;) Still working on our communications!
This looks absolutely amazing my friend, truly spectacular scenery!
Thank you! It was a fantastic hike!
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Thank you for taking us along. Happy Birthday Larry! My wife's Birthday is October 13th. Cheers!
My pleasure Dan! Thanks for the Birthday wishes and Happy Birthday to your wife. People with October 13 birthdays are special ... even if I do say so myself :D
@@nibimocs You're very welcome! My wife said to say thank you! Have a wonderful day!
Belated Happy Birthday! Glad you took a great video of that trail, I've always wanted to see it. I think I'll try an over night backpack trip there sometime. That north part of the loop looks nice and rugged, just love trails like that. Looks like Ruby is coming along well, you aren't kidding about the energy! Hope to see you out camping more, maybe even join you along the way.
Thanks Bryan!, It is a nice trail. Can't help but think about backpacking there sometime. Also, have to get my canoe out on Bass Lake and check out those cliffs on the south side. Maybe in 2024.
I've made a good start on editing my next video but have been majorly under the weather this week. Just now starting to feel well enough to start doing limited things again. Hope one of those things is video editing.
Excellent video, I felt like I was there hiking! I hiked that trail a few years back. It took us about one hour to do a mile…there are some very rocky parts that slowed us down! It was fun though and would probably do it again. At one point we looked at each and thought we should be done by now and we weren’t even close to being done!🥴
That trail definitely has some tough sections! But, well worth it. I added some distance by having to go back & fetch the camera! :D
A good old woodland walk there Larry. It felt nice and mellow. I do love a joyous dog mate - not when they're wet and muddy though - ha ha! Yeah, gotta keep an eye on that videoing - it's easy to find yourself out of light because of the love of it. Well, still a bit of color about - nice shots at the end. I trust you're well over there. All the best. Mark
Thanks Mark! There was a lot of color left when I shot this. That's long behind us now although we still don't have much snow on the ground. Quite a difference from last year. Unfortunately, I've been "under the weather" for about a week now. Seem to be finally getting better now -- have to be careful not to rush it though. Thanks again!
@@nibimocs A pleasure Larry. Yeah, all changed now. Sorry to hear you've been under the weather. I hope you're well by Christmas or new year. Peace.
Happy Birthday! How many this year? Awesome trail. You look great with your trimmed beard too :)
Ruby looked like she had fun too....thanks for the walk along.
Thank you! I've now completed 71 trips around the sun. Yeah, I need to trim my beard more frequently. I get lazy. Ruby had a blast! You're welcome for the walk along. Next up is a canoe trip :D
Can't wait! I love canoe trips too!
Just, please, do not hold your breath. It could take awhile...
@@nibimocs haha you are so funny!
5.25 miles is quite a jaunt ! Good for you and Ruby ! Looked like Ruby knew the way ! Did Ruby Point any critters ?
What were the Temps ? Any Blisters ?
Actually, when you consider all the "going back for the camera" jaunts, it was probably closer to 6 miles ;-) ... there were definitely some aches and pains the following day or so :-) ... on my part in any case. Ruby maybe slept just a little more. Ruby seems to be very good at finding/following trails (I almost nick named her the "trail finder"). She flushed a grouse and reacted to a few squirrels/chipmunks. And, of course, there was the dog incident. Temps were in the 40's. No blisters... just achy muscles. I'm used to walking about 3 miles a day with her (2 in the morning, 1 after supper) so 5.25 wasn't that much more. The trail, of course, was more rugged than what we usually walk on in/around town.
