I was actually able to solve this by thinking backwards and realizing that the
    H T
    T H
configuration is the only way to force a win. The gap between step 2 and the end is much easier by working backwards and realizing what step 5 needs to be.

Paused it and figured it out, though it took me a while.
    1. Pick two diagonal from each other, turn them both to tails no matter where they started.
    2. Pick two diagonal, if either of them are heads switch them both to tails (you've won) if they're both tails switch them to heads.
    3. Pick two diagonal, if either is tails switch it to heads (you've won) otherwise switch one to tails.
    4. Pick two beside each other, no matter what flip both of them.
    5. Pick two diagonal, no matter what flip both of them (you've won)
    Explanation:
At step one you've either won or proven at least one of the other coins is heads.
At step two you've either found the heads and fixed that (thereby winning) or found the same coins as before so you flip them to either win or prove that at least one of the other coins is tails. So you now know of the 2 coins you've yet to flip 1 is heads and 1 is tails and the 2 coins you've flipped are now heads. So three heads one tails
At step three you either find that pesky tails and fix it or you put a tails next to it. So you know there are two heads side by side and two tails side by side.
At step four you either find both heads and make them tails, all tails and make them heads or find one of each and make them switch position. So now you know you have both heads diagonal from each other and both tails diagonsl from each other.
At step five you either find both heads and make them tails, or both tails and make them heads. Since both of those are winning moves and there's no other possibility you've assured victory
Now time for me to watch the video and see if they used the same solution
Edit: huh, i hadn't thought of that different starting two moves, but that works just as well and ends up at the same known state. Interesting. And that opens up a solution that goes diagonal-horizontal-diagonal-horizontal-diagonal. A nice alternating solution, i like it.

I came here to post the exact same solution, and to point out that this solution is better in the sense that it has a 1 in 2 possibility of solving it on the second turn, as opposed to 1 in 4. Meaning you'll solve it in fewer turns on average than was done in the video

That's why i love watching on TH-cam because i can pause indefinitely and find it for myself. Also, i'm not much of a team player so going into the corner is 2-fold and the answer is all the more satisfying.

    My method
    X - Heads O - Tails U - Unidentified
1: Do 2 coins next to each other and flip them both heads
    XX
    UU
2: Choose 2 coins across and flip them both to heads (If I don't win then U is tails)
    XX
    XO
3: Choose 2 coins across, if one is Tails I flip it and win, but if both are heads I flip one of them
    XO
    XO
4: Choose 2 coins next to each other and flip both of them, if they're the same I win but if not I get a pattern
    XO
    OX
5: Choose 2 coins across and flip them both
    XX OO
    XX or OO

That one was way too good!
I spent a good hour working on it and actually solved it!! However, definitely not in the way you had...
I may have taken some creative liberties with the rules of the puzzle, but I found a pretty interesting (and much more complicated) solution that uses the coin face's orientation to guarantee the light is on in 3 spins! (or as far as I have worked out anyways)
Move 1: Go to adjacent rooms and flip to heads, point the top of the head at the room you are going to as well as the room you came from.
    (Scenario 1)
    Move 2:
Enter room and if tails, flip to heads point the top of the head to the diagonal room; Enter diagonal room and note whether the coin is pointing towards the right or left room. You can now identify where the fourth room is because the second coin identified the location of the third and the fourth is left over.
    Move 3:
(Example as if in move two the second coin was directed left)
    Enter room.
If heads pointing to the left wall, enter the right room and flip the remaining coin.
If heads pointing right, enter the diagonal room and flip the remaining coin.
If heads pointing diagonal, enter the left room and flip the remaining coin.
    (Scenario 2)
    Move 2:
Enter room and if heads, note the direction it was pointed and change its orientation to point towards the diagonal room. Enter the diagonal room, ensure the coin is heads and point it towards the room with the last remaining tails coin (which was identified via process of elimination from the first room in this spin). Note whether it is pointing to the left or right room.
    Move 3:
(Example as if in move two the second coin was directed right)
    Enter room.
If heads pointing diagonal, enter the left room and flip the remaining coin. (The only coin pointing diagonal will lead to right > tails)
If heads pointing to the left wall, enter the diagonal room and flip the remaining coin. (The only coin pointing left will lead to diagonal > right > tails)
If heads pointing right, enter the right room and flip the remaining coin. (The only coin pointing a right wall is identifying the tails.)
Thanks to anyone who read tried to see if it works for themselves, I might have missed something.

Only seen the puzzle so far, but here's my guess:
First take the two that are next to each other, then turn both to the same side
If not won, take two opposites, and turn both to the same side as the previous round
If not won, take two opposites, if you get two unequal, put both to the same side as the previous round, otherwise flip one of the coins.
If not won, take two that are next to each other and flip both
If not won, take two opposites and flip both.

  • @aliasmask
    @aliasmask 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    1) pick diag, make them the same, if already the same flip both. 2) pick adjacent, flip any to match first leaving 3/1 combo or win. 3) pick diag, if different flip to match first flip for win, else flip 1 to get 2/2 config. 4) pick adjacent, flip both for win or to get X config. 5) pick diag, flip both for win.

I think the approach key was working backward as well as forward. Move 4 was the hard move, for sure, but it became clear to me when i considered that the end of move 5 had all heads or all tails, and then asking myself what the result of turn 4 had to be to ensure success. The only combination that guaranteed a win reveals what move 4 had to be.

  • @__-cd9ug

I'm at 6:20 and I think I have figured it out
I'm just posting that for myself when I'm done watching the video, to see whether my guess had flaws.
1- Open 2 next to each other. Set them both to T.
2- Open 2 diagonal. Set them both to T again (one of them is T already but anyway).
At this point, either the light turns on because the remaining one is T too, or it doesn't and you go to 3.
3- Open 2 next to each other.
Either (a) one of them is T and the other is H, at which point you just have to turn the H to T and you're 100% sure they're all T.
Or (b) they're both T and you flip one of the coins to H.
If you chose (a), light shines. If you chose (b), you know you've got 2 T and 2 H. Just need to know if the pairs are next to each other or diagonal:
4- Open 2 diagonal. Either they're the same face up and you flip them both over; Or they're different and .........
OK nevermind I just realized that from 4 it's just luck because you could keep going forever if you're extremely unlucky and you're not sure 100% that you solve the puzzle. So, I don't have the answer.

@8:02 Got it! Assuming you don't get a light until after the 5th spin:
Step #1) Open adjacent quadrants; flip both to Heads. Known info (in clock-wise order): HH??.
Step #2) Open diagonal quadrants; flip both to Heads. Known info: HHH?. Known info is now: HHHT (due to no light)
Step #3) Open diagonal quadrants; (if H/T, you win, but assuming H/H:) flip 1 to tails. Known info: HHTT (the tails will always be adjacent, as will the heads)
Step #4) Open adjacent quadrants; (if H/H or T/T you win, but assume H/T:) invert both. Known info: HTHT (because you inverted, you will always get this alternating pattern)
Step #5) Open diagonal quadrants; You will either find H/H or T/T because of Step 4. Swap both to the opposite side (if H/H, flip to T/T or vice versa). Close. Light. Done!

    • @stoppernz229
      @stoppernz229 4 ปีที่แล้ว

step 2 is flawed, if you flip diagonal and they're already HH then you have to flip them both to TT then you know you have three T's in a row and one head, if you flip HH to HH you're no further ahead than the first step. the rest is as you describe.

  • @kenhaley4
    @kenhaley4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I got it! You owe me a beer! The key was realizing that you need to get to HTHT, if you don't get lucky and win before that.

    • @kenhaley4
      @kenhaley4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Also, it helps to realize that there are basically only two choices of what to flip each turn: Adjacent or Diagonal. And that it would never make sense to do make the same choice twice in a row--you need to alternate.

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I actually start out differently and do three diagonals in a row. First, set both to tails. This will either win me the game or not. Second, I do the diagonal again. If I don't get two tails I know the other diagonal is two tails and I can win the game. If I get the two diagonal tails again, I flip them to heads. This will win me the game or not. If it doesn't, I know that the other diagonal is one tails and one heads and I know I now have three heads and one tails. Now I'm at the same point as in the video and proceed from there.

    • @TuringMachine001
      @TuringMachine001 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ynwa73 Staffan already covered the possibility of getting the same diagonal multiple times in a row. When you make the same diagonal 2 tails on the first round then 2 heads on the second round, you'll win the game if the other diagonal is 2 heads or 2 tails. So this guarantees that by the third round you'll have 3 heads and 1 tails, which allows you to finish the job like shown in the video.

    • @TuringMachine001
      @TuringMachine001 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Mazsi1201 No, Staffan meant two diagonals in a row followed by the last 3 steps shown in the video, which happen to start with a diagonal. That's why he said "three diagonals in a row".

There is actually a way where you have a 96.875% chance that you only need 4 moves!
The key thing is that there are 2 solutions(all H or all T) but in Brians solution you choose one of them and ignore the other one.
If you actually don't choose one side and only try and solve for all coins being equal the solution goes like this:
-first you choose 2 diagonals(i always choose top right and bottom left as an example)
-they are either equal or different:
    EQUAL:
-if they are equal there are 2 ways how the coins can be arranged
    HT TT
    TH TH
    1.MOVE: switch both diagonals
-left one will be solved and right one will now look like this:
    TH
    HH
-you now know there are 3 H so you choose the diagonals again
    HH TH
    TH HH
2.MOVE for left: if you see the last T just flip it over and you won
2.MOVE for right: if u don't see the last T flip over one of the 2 H's(doesn't matter which one)
-you now choose 2 sideways coins(i always choose top right and bottom right as an example)
    TH TT
    TH HH
3.MOVE for left: if both coins are equal just flip both and you won
3.MOVE for right: if they are different flip them both over(basically Brians 4th move)
    TH
    HT
4.MOVE: just choose diagonals and flip both and you won
    DIFFERENT:
-if they are different there are also only 2 ways how the coins can be arranged
    HT HT
    HT HH
1.MOVE: switch only one of your 2 diagonal coins(right one might be solved instantly)
    -you now choose 2 diagonals
    HT HT TH
    TT TH TT
2.MOVE for left and middle: if the coins are equal flip both of them(middle one will be solved)
2.MOVE for right: if the coins are different you know there has to be 3 T's after your 1.MOVE so you flip the last H and won
-you now choose 2 diagonals again
    HH HH
    TH HT
3.MOVE for left: if the coins are different you know there has to be 3 H's after your 2.MOVE so you flip the last T and won
3.MOVE for right: if the coins are equal just flip one of them(doesn't matter which one)
    -you now choose sideways coins
    HT TT
    HT HH
4.MOVE for left: if the coins are equal just flip both of them and you won
4.MOVE for right: if the coins are different flip both of them(basically Brians 4th move again)
-the chances that you didn't win yet are only 3.125% so if you are still here you must be pretty unlucky
    HT
    TH
5.MOVE: just choose 2 diagonal coins and flip them over and you finally won aswell
After doing all this i wonder if i have too much free time but i really wanted to find a way how you can solve this in only 4 moves but this was the closest i could get. If you are still reading this i hope i didnt' waste your time with my solution ând if anything in my explanation was not clear feel free to ask and i might answer. ;-)

    My guess (spoilers possibly).
Simplified, can you have the rotation of the coins set to point at stuff? If so you can do the whole diagonal, adjacent thing and identify specific boxes by pointing the coins at the same box on round one, then open boxes one at a time to figure out which one you need to open and flip.

  • @chrisb1205
    @chrisb1205 6 ปีที่แล้ว

If the coins can't turn don't spin or move when the puzzle rotates you can do it in three moves(unless you're unlucky). First Open Diagonal boxes and turn them to heads and orient the crown of one and the crown of the other towards the light. Next open adjacent boxes. Point the neck of the new coin towards the coin diagonal from the other coin. This should form a 7 like shape if you were to draw a line connecting the crowns. On the third spin open one box and you should know based on the direction of the coin which box you should open.
For example(see below) if you opened the NW(Northwest) and SE boxes, point the heads towards the SE. On the next spin you open the top two boxes to find the right one pointing towards the center, so you turn the left one so it's neck is pointing toward you. On the third spin you open the bottom right box and if the crown of the coin is pointing SW the final coin is SE, If W then NE and, If NE then NW.
    1. 2. 3.

I know that I can get three of them the same.
First move, flip open two cases that are across from each other. Arrange them so that they are both heads.
Second turn, open two adjacent cases. One case will be a heads from before, the other will be one you didn't open. Arrange it so that the one you didn't open is heads.
At the point, you should have three heads and one tails, or four heads.
I am stumped on how to get the 4th heads.

  • @ryanwalker258
    @ryanwalker258 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Wouldn't move 4 depend on what coin you flip in move 3? If in move 3 you flip the coin adjacent to the wrong coin then you can progress to move 4 as stated, but if you flip the coin diagonal then you are already at the move 4 setup which means that move 4 is no longer valid and would not allow you to win on move 5. Or am I overlooking something that would fix this scenario?

you pick diagonal in move 3. Therefore the wrong coin is either seen and can be fixed or both coins are adjacent to the wrong one.

holy mackerel that was hard. I saw the explanation and I still don't know if I get it

  • @Laurensz0r
    @Laurensz0r 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Alternatively:
First move: diagonals, flip them both to heads.
Second move: diagonals. If they're not both heads, then make them heads, you win. If they are both heads, then flip them both to tails. This means that you have one diagonal pair of heads, and the other diagonal pair of tails.
third move: diagonals. Flip them both. You win guaranteed.
Damnit Brian, why did you give them 5 moves, 3 is enough!

    • @Laurensz0r
      @Laurensz0r 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup, thanks, you're right. Revised solution:
After the original second move you are sure that the two diagonals that you have not seen are different (since you've tried heads and tails for the other diagonals).
third move: Diagonals. Assuming you see your 2 tails again, flip one of the ones that are still face down. This makes both of the face down ones the same. If you don't see your two tails, than simply flip them to tails, you win.
fourth move: flip two diagonals, you win.
      right?

you turn and open two, check what they are and remember that. If you turn the. HH or TT and he bulb doesn't light up, the two unknown or HT or TH, Else you would have won.
But you could always get the same. So it is important to pic two diagonal and than two new to each other.
It's possible to do it in less than 5?

So you do: (assuming you haven't won until 5 ie you don't luck out where the segment choice has landed you on two that you know are the remaining heads or tails)
1.line segment and make em all heads
2.diagonal and make em all heads
3.diagonal and make one of em tails
4.line segment and switch both of em
    5. Diagonal and switch both
The first two steps are interchangeable the rest give you
    3:
    H H
    T T
    4:
    H T
    T H

  • @Veptis

My idea would be to go and have one diagonal HH and one TT than just flip it over and win.
.to get that you can start your first diagonal by flipping it HH and if you don't win the other one is either TH or TT. If you spin and no lights up, you take two next to each other. One of them will be H and the other might be. So now you flip the other to T if it wasn't HT and do a diagolan spin pick again. If you see HT you are screwed.

    2:12 Pausing.
Turn 1: Check to see if they're H/T. If yes, leave it be, spin again. If not, change it to H/T.
Thinking: If the goal is to get the light to turn on, then there are really only a few states that the coins can be in. HHHT, HHTT (not HHHH because the light would already be on)(everything else is a mirrored version of what I already said).
Let's assume the first case (HHHT); if I get an H/T, then I would try again. If I get two matching faces, I'd actually CHANGE one of them to be the opposite. So, HHHT would become H(T)HT or HH(T)T, where the faces in parentheses are the ones that I've changed. In essence, I created HHTT so far, OR it stays as HHHT.
Turn 2: Check to see if they're H/T. If yes, leave it be, spin again. If not, change it to H/T.
Thinking: I'd end up with one of the following- some form of HT(T)(T) or HHHT (assuming turn 1 was a pass).
Turn 3: H/T again. Except now, it's the opposite. I want to pass if they're the same.
Thinking: At this point, I know that there is at least one tails in the configuration OR three of the same. It should become something like this- (T)T(T)(T) (at this point I win), HT(T)(T), HHHT.
Turn 4: If you've passed 1 and 2, turn any tails into a head. If not, change any heads into a tail.
Thinking: I'm just trying to tie up loose ends at this point.
Turn 5: Uh, I guess if I'm unlucky enough that 4 didn't work?
    Thinking: ^
