A CNC Router You CAN Run Vertically? We Put it to the Test on a 3D Carve!

- This CNC router video explains if and when you can run your CNC router vertically rather than horizontally. In this video, we cover the Longmill MK2 CNC router and how to set it up vertically and mount it on a tilt table from Rockler.
CNC routers with screw drives can be run vertically, but it is not recommended with belt-drive CNC machines. Running your CNC router vertically, and mounting on a tilt frame also is a spacing method to keep the garage clear.
In this video, you will also learn how to recover your x, Y & Z positions after the zero was lost. Especially when carving 3d CNC router projects. The 3D carve in this video can be found in the Vectric Vcarve and Aspire design software. This is the software that is taught on this channel.

Just wanted to say thankyou. I ordered your beginner bit package off of your website. Just received them yesterday. Got my bobs quantum max a week ago and have had it together a few days. I bought a longmill 30x30 a year or two ago. I knew it was possible to install it vertically!
I just finished installing it vertically and it saving me so much space. I dont like using the dust thing, so I made a shoot underneath that collects all the saw dust. Good to use for when I spill my coffee!

Great video Garrett. I ran my Longmill vertically for a long time before burning a Y axis stepper driver. It may not have been related, but I ended up mounting it at 45 degrees. A great space saver for my tiny shop!

Excellent video! Packed with good information. The Rockler tilt table is a game changer for me. I have one and use it to load 4x8 plywood from my truck directly onto my CNC. Your idea to use it for your CNC base is brilliant! Now I have to make a trip to Rockler to get another tilt table. That makes the Longmill a portable CNC. Roll it into a trailer and take it to a job site.

F8th01, your new machine will be an amazing upgrade. The app has metric on the bit page, you can select between metric and inch with a button right underneath the description for the bit you are on! If you dont see it, make sure your app is up to date in the app store.
Just used The Hog for the first time a few days ago. I was just carving into pine, but that thing can seriously move some material. The different sound did concern me for a minute, but then I realized it's just a result of how this bit is designed and used.

Nice timing, saw a few vids this week about wall mounting, tilt table makes more sense. A dust gutter will help maybe.

One thing I have done to mark the push button switches on the control box...... 3 strips of masking tape around the switches. Stop gets a red strip. Pause gets a yellow strip. Resume gets a green strip. That way you don't have to think or try to read the labels. You KNOW by the color which button you may want to push. Nice video. Too late for me, my table is made and my garage is all re-arranged to make more space. Could always do that later I suppose. You have proven that counter weights are not needed to take the load off the motors. Cool deal.
Two Y motors have enough torque, those routers with one Y stepper will struggle.

Hi Garrett, another great video! I just wanted to comment about picking up the second tool when the stock is already missing. I’ll just grab a gauge block of any size and touch off with the first tool and record the Z value. Then I’ll put the next tool in and touch the gauge block with it, then enter the value of the first tool in the z position in gsender for the second tool. I hope I described this correctly. This may not be for everyone but it works well for me. Your method is just as good! Just thought I’d like to share. Thanks again!

Nice work around for a mobile tilting table instead of coming up with a custom version. Less time engineering, more time for CNCing. Also appreciate the upgrade on the video production.

The tilting table is interesting. I usually like to get a machine in place, get it leveled and trammed and leave it there. To me, moving it often means losing accuracy, but some guys have their machines on dolly's or moveable tables and they have to move things around for lack of space. You sort of converted your vertical router into a horizontal one, obviously resulting in a smaller footprint. There is some benefits to horizontal machining. One of then being your chips fall off your piece and don't build up around it. With a dust collector and wood, it might not be as big a benefit.
The hog mill you are using looks like a fine tooth roughing end mill with TiCN coating. I've used them on hard metals like titanium and stainless alloys. They don't necessarily cut any faster or you're able to take lager cuts with them. They do cut much smoother. You get virtually no vibration like you will likely get from a more conventional end mill. I never used them on wood.
Climb and conventional cuts? Well in climb cuts the cutter climbs over the material. It pushes away from the material. In conventional cuts, the tool is pushing the material and pulling itself inward. This is usually the direction of cut used with hand routers. You try to climb with a hand router, it can grab and get away from you. That cut direction can also can lead to increased tear out. Conventional cuts also require a lot more force. That could result in your piece or hold down fixture moving. A clockwise spiral cut from the outside in keeps the tool in climb cut mode, reducing cutting force and tear out.
I've seen you stand on the Longmill gantry to show how rigid it is. What really impressed me though was in one of your videos, you were using a large diameter tool. I think it was a corner rounding cutter. You were taking a heavy cut at a high feed rate and buried that tool in a corner. The router motor slowed down but the gantry didn't flinch. That was impressive.
When you are setting tool heights from the top of your material and a tool has cut the top of the piece, you no longer have that reference height. You can cut a block the same height of the material you are cutting. Set your tool heights off that. Or you can set your tools off your machine table, or spoil board, essentially the bottom of your piece. It's easy to do in Vectric.
I use a a battery backed UPS with my router. I think I get cleaner electric, but more importantly if I have a brief power interruption, the machine keeps going. if the power goes out longer, I can stop the machine and return it to X0., Y0., Z0. With long running 3D cuts, power interruptions can get expensive. I've also taped a piece of scrap wood to my spoil board and made a spot mark at some known distance from my piece 0,0. Lets say X-3. Y-3. If i lose power and my position, I can relocate that spot and move X3. Y3. from it and I'm back at my piece 0,0. That was my fall back when I stopped a cut because it was late and I was tired. I forgot to bring the machine back to 0,0. I don't have a home position on my machine. It's an open system. Where I shut it off is where my new 0,0 is. So I kind of created one in a primitive way.

Doesn't your controller save G54 to 59.3 - work offsets? Most do, so you should be able to re-zero and restart that finishing cut without any re-offsetting. Nice pads, thanks for the find, Great video as usual. 👍

Could you plot a .25 hole on the post in your drawing to be a off work piece x-y zero reference point. Often in the cnc mill world one will have a. 25 hole in the center of fixed jaw as a location. Z zero is always the top of the material. Measured by the distance from the machine table to the top of the material. The result is a always + z distance in the dro . Is this the case in the cnc router market?
Scott, you could definitely do something like that brother. You could also use a work coordinate system in addition to this to make it easier for more projects too!
On the Rockler site for the table, it specifies a weight limit of 150#. If we build a table for the 48/30 LM, it suggests the table be 4/6. I'm wondering about the weight limit of a plywood, 2x4 around and 2x4 torsion on the underside then adding the LM at 48x30 and the product weight you are carving. Your thoughts?
P, good call brother. Weight is definitely a concern but it is well within the limits. That might depend on your CNC though.

Wow that's good idea, I've DIY CNC full ballscrew for all axis, can I applying this tips to my machine too? My working table is 1200mm x 2400mm 😅
If you have two steppers on the Y you should be ok. Otherwise, cables, pulleys and counterweights will be needed.
@@alwayscensored6871 Indid, for Y axis I have 2 stepper Nema 34 12nm, and have double-ballnut each ballscrew.
But the main problem is the wight and size of my machine, currently it's impossible to tilt more than 30 degree. (30 degree is not enough 😅)
GelX, you should be good to go for your machine brother if you have two Y axis stepper motors.

On projects that I’m machining the surface away, I use a zero point off to the side.
R, good point brother! That is definitely the right way to go in a lot of instances.
Well, as stated in a comment on this video a bit ago I stated that I installed it directly vertical on my wall! Big mistake! The X, Z axis rail goes out of whack, becomes out of level on one side, eventually came crashing down from the Y axis motors (the threaded rods on both sides came out from the clasp that connect to both motors).
When I fixed it all back up and leveled it off, it went back out of level and dropped down less then an inch on one side.
So, as nice as it was with a built sawdust chute underneath and all debris falling directly in and with ease of access to the whole cutting area without having to reach over and under, it doesn't stay level because of gravity and its heavier on one side then the other.
The tilt table idea is best. Not directly install on a wall!! My mistake.

Great video. I have a couple of comments and I'm probably going to edit this to add more and it would be great to hear your input if you have time.
Just got done with a project. gSender was done so I sent the router back to x0 y0. To my surprise it was a good 1/4" off so I had to break out that aluminum block again and of course the second cut was noooot quite the same but good enough (my x&y did not skew either)???
My project did not move!
Also, how do you zero the x & y with such an odd shape bit using the aluminum block OR did you use the paper method? I doubt I will buy the longmill thingy for odd shaped bits. That costs too much for my budget.
And most importantly, How do you enter an odd shaped bit into the database? Right now I am using carbide create but I imaging it is similar process in your program.

No dust Colleton system ?
I temporarily set up a vacuum system trying to come up with the best setup for the hoses. I took it all off for now. The routers internal fan does a pretty good job of keeping the dust and chips out of the work area. For now, I want to see what the machine is doing while it is working.

Couldn’t you just permanently mount a known home location that you can just edge find to regain an accurate x&y location again.
For the z you just have to know what the difference in height is between your work originally was.
Jordan, you could but I wouldn't recommend it. I recommend resetting your zeros with each project otherwise you may not have the same accuracy for your projects.
