    Trevor Wilkinson solved the "scary trem" problem back in the 80's when he invented the VS 100-C convertible trem system. When you're not using it, it's a stoptail bridge; the moment you swing the arm forward, it converts to a floating trem, and switches back once you let it go again.
    Unfortunately, Gibson sued Wilkinson claiming that the VS 100-C violated the Steinberger JamTrem patent (which it didn't; they work in completely different ways) and somehow won. After that, the Wilkinson convertible became scarcer than hens teeth! It's too bad, too, because it really works, and will even let you finish a song if you break a string.

    Nice to see company's comming up with more reliable, robust and quality trem stabilization systems.
    In my defence, I'm a lefty and most of budget range lefty guitars are either equipped with cheap floyd ross licenced 2 point floaters or wilkinson vintage knockoffs with plethora of intonation and stability issues.
    My very first guitar was a jackson js32 dinky with a chewed up floyd pivot point. It was the only guitar I could find at the moment and was kinda brand new. Anyways, interacting with that guitar's floyd ross bridge scarred me for life. Even now, whenever I see a premium quality guitar equipped with a decent or high end floating bridge system, I can't help having qualms and intimidation, thanks to my past experiences.

I've been playing almost 40 years and I've only ever broken the high E (and less than five times) so I've got to wonder what kind of abuse people are inflicting on their guitars? Should we report these people to Instrument Control? ;-) All kidding aside, I've always hated those very issues with floating trems, and having over 20 guitars, I might actually have to give this a try on one of them and see if it helps out. Another great post, Darrell. Cheers.

      Floyd roses are NOT hard to setup, once you know how to do it. Block the trem, restring and tuneup, remove the block, tweak claw screws if needed. Done. Before I learned this I too suffered with floyd roses. Suffering with a floyd rose does not make you man, it just makes you an uninformed noobie Floyd Rose user - like most guitar players out there. The easy way to setup a floyd rose is surprisingly uncommon knowledge.

All-pats offer a more complex version for 3 times the price. Never-the-less, the fzg solutions appears to be very stable and consistent. And the real value-add to the exististing systems is a consistent quick change option, which is not as elegant with the existing solutions. Well done and very promising. Definitely worth a glance

    Too expensive, but for someone requiring this, it's one of the best solutions I've seen so far.
    I have to retune strings on a fixed, decked, or blocked bridge even for Drop D. I think it's the neck stretching with the lower tension.
    Only have one Floyd guitar. The strat is decked, the one PRS blocked so it's dive only. The other PRS is recording only. The rest is fixed bridges.

    The biggest issue with a system like this is that you have to flip your guitar over and switch it on/off, with no backplate on the spring cavity. In mid-song, that's not usually a move you can pull off. If you choose float or stoptail for each song, it would do the trick.
    The Tremol-no is similar, but a fussy, rattling POS that will frustrate you. This one looks more solid.
    Steinberger Transtrems had the perfect method, just swing your trem up up to float, drop it down to lock. No switching, just a wedge that locked into the bridge plate when the bar dropped down, Unfortunately, Steinberger used a softer metal that wore out eventually, and the company is not around to offer replacement parts. Wilkinson offered the VS-100C convertible trem, which locked a pin into a hole in the metal backplate; it worked, but the trem arm raised up higher above the strings, which was not ideal for trem use.
    Early Parker Flys had a lever on the backplate that would slide a stop into place for similar function as this device, but they didn't continue offering it.
    Schaller made a Tremstop device that caught the trem arm in a little clip, but required mounting a large plastic knob device on the face of your guitar.
    Lots of attempts to address this issue, but they have all had a failing or a compromise.
    Oh Steinberger, come back and save us with your trem-arm locking genius! Use hardened metal this time!

    The version of the stab i'm installing on my guitars has a reverse spring instead of a switch. The bridge lies on the stab permanently and the spring sustain the tune. With the wammie bar you can pull the bridge and band up pushing the stab backward. The only cons is that the system becomes a little bit harder to play. Try it out, you will be surprised. Just few euros on aliexpress. Let me know.

    I really liked that guitar, but the Laguna version of the Floyd Rose was kinda crap. The handle was always really loose cus it just snapped in rather than screwing down.

I lost everything, 22 guitars, one of the 1st five Steinway & Son's pianos which all shipped out on the same truck in the 1890's. All due to fraud! I dearly miss my Westy!!!

    The best system to keep tuning stability on a floating bridge is the "AEX 5+" by Russian Alexander Khromov who still sells it direct by email, look here on youtube for his videos and reviews, that design was stolen by Thomman Germany and sold as the "Tremmory" so please don't buy it from Thomman and buy it directly from Khromov, is around 40 us dollars and requires NO modification or any holes drilling to the guitar

    A cheap alternative is perhaps install a small piece of wood behind the block when you change tunings and replacing a broken string. Just a thought. Apparently Eric Clapton does have a piece of wood behind the block as he doesn't operate the trem.

    @Darrell - About 6 months ago, I came up with my own solution to be able to quickly switch from a floating Trem to a Decked one. I made a wedge, the length of my Strat bridge, that I could slip under the back side of the bridge from the top of the guitar. The trick was coming up with an easy way to hold the wedge in place. I made a "backstop" and a "bottom-stop" that are held to the top with double -sided tape. All the pieces are made of triple-ply pickguard material. I can slip the wedge in and out of place in about 3 seconds.
    It has all the benefits of decking the bridge when in place, and floating the bridge when the wedge is removed. Changing strings is almost fun, because once a string is turned up, it doesn't change pitch as the other strings are tuned. Altered tunings are much more manageable, and breaking a string is not catastrophic. I put a couple of thin pieces of metal towards the edge of the wedge, and a couple of small Neodymium magnets on my tuning machines so I can stick the wedge to them when not in use. As you mentioned, these ways of decking the bridge is a bit finicky, and it takes some time to set things up just right, but I think it's worth it.
    You get two different sounding guitars by having an easy way to "quick deck" the bridge. I suggest you demonstrate the difference in tone you get on a Strat. Without the bridge decked, my modded Strat sounds pretty much like a typical Strat. But, when the wedge is in place, it sounds a lot more like a PRS. Pretty neat trick for something that cost me nothing more than a bit of ingenuity.
    FYI - I tried some different materials for the wedge, metal, wood, bone, etc. but strangely, the pickguard material sounded best. By the way, a popsicle stick has just about the right dimensions to do a quick test, and you can hold it place with some Painters Tape to see if it's something you might want to pursue. ONE CAUTION - BE CAREFUL REMOVING THE PAINTERS TAPE, AS YOU DON'T WANT TO ACCIDENTALLY REMOVE SOME FINISH OR PAINT FROM THE TOP OF YOUR GUITAR. Thanks

      Ugh I always see people talking about blocking the trem, you lose flutter ability. Look up what a stabilizer is, it'll let you flutter and not go out of tune when a string breaks. As for quick tuning changes, get a d tuna or a pitch shifter, it's much faster than going to drop d even on a standard guitar

    From what I see, it only works in one direction: avoid reaction of the bridge to a reduction on total string tension. When the opposite happens, as when you are tunning your guitar, you still have the annoying problem of losing tension on thinner strings when increasing tension on thicker ones. I'm not sold on it. For the price, I would expect it to solve both problems.

  • @j_freed

    When is string breaks, the drop in tension allows the neck to flex back, making all the strings sharp. Some necks are more sensitive to flexing than others.

    • @larrysteinke1839
      @larrysteinke1839 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the issue is not the neck tension, it's the Tremelo spring tension that goes out of balance when the string tension changes. with this Trem switch, the lower strung tension caused by breaking a string or dropping the D causes the tremelo bridge to set onto the stop. essentially becoming a decked tremelo.

    • @normbarrows
      @normbarrows 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any neck that sensitive to string tension is probably not really strong enough. With that much flex, you'd always have to adjust the truss rod while strung up and in tune. And that would make fret leveling nigh impossible. Set the neck flat when under tension, remove strings to level frets, and now the neck isn't flat! Sounds like you need a new neck dude!

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@larrysteinke1839 I know that, This is a separate problem… even on a fixed bridge guitar, one string breaks and the others can go slightly sharp. This is the redistribution of string tension on the neck, versus the truss rod tension.
      Some guitars have a very rigid neck, others are more Bendy.
      If you push forward on the back of the headstock of various guitars, you’ll note the differences.
      And if you notice in the video, Darell notes that the guitar doesn’t remain perfectly in tune when the spring breaks, even with this device… It’s supposed to be close enough for getting through song. Everything in the physics of a guitar is a compromise.

    Gibson patent-trolled the best solution to this back in the 90's. Back then the Wilkinson Strat improvement was the V100, but for a hot minute they had a model called the V100C - C for Convertible. When you grabbed the bar (twisted it up into playing position) you had a trem, and when you let go, gravity dropped the bar and the bridge locked - full hardtail bridge. Gibson owned Steinberger, and one particularly awful bridge system that Steingerger made had a slider-switch on it that would lock the bridge. Really, it wasn't the same thing at all, but I guess Wilkinson decided the cost of fighting the Big G and it's million dollar lawyers was too much, and pulled the system off the shelves.
    By the way, if you're willing to fiddle around the underside of the instrument, there has already been a device out for a few years called the Tremol-No, which has two screws, allowing switching between full trem, blocked, and hardtail.
    Also, both of these don't (didn't) require drilling extra holes into your guitar.

    Hey thanks for the video dude. I guess you have to put holes in your guitar you have to drill to put new screws in I think for most people if they have you know guitars they really like that they don't want to you know do something like that that's non-reversible in the sense that you'll have holes in your guitar I guess that's not an option. And I guess it's not an option for bixby's? I'm not sure on that point. But my Bixby stays in tune I have a hollow body scratch and it works fine it's a trapeze type I think it's the seven and the Bixby seven seems to do what it's supposed to do. Still getting used to it even though I have it for months now I'm not or have never been a trim user. I had a trim on my first guitar which was a 69 Gibson SG standard it had a Bixby on it but you couldn't use it. Brought it back to the place where I bought it in Manhattan in the music district. They used to be a music district for my mistaken it was 47 and 48th street. Every music store that you can imagine and can imagine was at that two blocks in manhattan. There was one great guitar store that's not there anymore. This guitar store was called we buy and sell used guitars. A perfect name for exactly what they did. Their store was literally Walter wall from floor to ceiling used guitars. All different ranges. At the time I paid $325 for that 69 Gibson SG standard with a case. If you take that money and fiddle it to a with inflation to today it was an expensive guitar. Although at that time which was about 1981 I would estimate there wasn't much there wasn't much call for gibson's. When I needed to sell it I was offered a gig in California San Francisco to play drums for a band. That was my main instrument and I guess still is. I play professionally for years whereas the guitar I just taught myself so I can write my own music. But I couldn't sell it for anything this was already 83 nobody wanted to buy it. I ended up trading it in at Berkeley music store in Berkeley California for $240 worth of credit. Of which I bought symbols got a really good deal on the symbols though they were all zildjian brand new high hats and use the ride and crash. But like I said it wasn't much demand for that guitar. Boy I wish I had it now lol. It'd be worth a little bit more money I think than the 325 even with inflation but it is what it is. My first guitar after 35 years or 32 years whatever of not touching the guitar. I had gone blind in the interim and really stop playing guitar at that point. And my first guitar I bought again was a used SG special gibson. I called it my special special cuz it was a special order wine red high gloss. 2005. In 2005 the SG special came with what they call the one finish which was really a faded satin finish. Two humbuckers 490 t and 490r. Didn't really like them at first but I want to love them. Anyway I love that guitar it got me started again I now have six and this week will be purchasing number 7. I'm going for the tribute 59 less Fall by epiphone. Seems like a really good deal for that price. Anyway this became more of a short anyway sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist
