    Hi, I'm a Londoner who's retired to Porto and I must say that whilst you're right, the weather is perhaps more doubtful here than it is in Lisbon or the Algarve, it has never ever presented a problem for me. Perhaps for a tourist, who has arrived for a few days visit, an overcast or rainy day may be a major disaster but for me it's obviosly just part of life's rich pattern.
    An advantage of living here are the regular and cheap flights between Porto and London Stansted, subject to global pandemics of course, and for nearly four years I commuted on a weekly basis between here and Essex, England, for my work.
    Another really nice thing is that many years ago, long before you were both born, I lived in Denmark for my sins and the cultural and social standing in Porto today reminds me very much of those formative days spent on Jutland all those years ago!
    Take care both of you and enjoy your lives.

    • @LHollan
      @LHollan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh really? What kind of similarities could you mention between that city in Denmark and Porto?

    • @jamesjeffries8281
      @jamesjeffries8281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@LHollan Hi, I'm not referring to any city in particular in Denmark, in fact I lived in what would have been considered a village all those years ago, but I'm referring to a certain relaxed atmosphere of the people within the entire country.
      There was respect for each other and for the establishment both of which had already been lost back in Britain which was growing rapidly at the time.
      The people of Denmark were still in touch with their cultures, their traditions and their arts and were all very proud of them. It was just like Denmark was not so much a country but a giant village with everybody working together to maintain a peaceful but efficient environment.
      I've always had that same relaxed feeling about Porto, although sometimes I do wish things could happen a bit faster, but approximately a quarter of the population of Portugal live in the city and districts but everywhere you look there are remnants of cultures from hundreds of years ago mixed in with the latest technology and trends.
      A good example would be the city buses, powered by natural gas and offering free wifi driving past the open sided wash houses with the noisy elderly women rubbing their clothes over the corrugated iron washboards just the same as their mothers and grandmothers did.
      Sadly the main market in the centre of the city is being rebuilt, probably not before time many would argue but whilst the structure of the building would renew its integrity the atmosphere and character will never be the same but I suppose then need for a more clinical environment is the order of the day.
      As far as a relaxed slow paced retirement is concerned I can certainly recommend Porto which must be one of the friendliest cities in the world!

      James , good points !

    • @jamesjeffries8281
      @jamesjeffries8281 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @roberto lang well you can't be speaking for all 'Lusitanians' because over the years I've found the Portuguese to be amongst the kindest and respective nations in the world and I'm sure most fellow 'Anglo Saxons' would agree with that!

    • @jamesjeffries8281
      @jamesjeffries8281 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @roberto lang I think your opinion of the UK is totally misled, nobody is deserting the UK, everything in the UK does cost a lot more than perhaps Portugal but probably less than France, but then again the the wages are much higher so it's not really noticeable.
      With regards to property, nobody is deserting them, they are never deserted but sold for considerable profit and in fact there is an acute shortage of property to purchase in the UK helping to keep property values high.
      The British Government's are not good but they are not good in any country, wherever you look but sadly that is a fact of life and always will be.
      According to the Portuguese financial papers Portugal has the highest GDP of all countries within the European block which is good for such a small country but I can assure you that the UK GDP is far higher and climbing!
      The UK is going into recession at the moment, like the European block and therefore finances are quite unstable for every country but unlike countries that accepted the Euro, which obviously includes Portugal, the UK will not be pulled down by Germany and France in the coming months when energy, which was being purchased from not only one supplier but an unstable supplier, is in peak demand.
      The British have a history of travelling and living in other countries, paying taxes in those countries through their eating, sleeping and purchases made so surely we are contributing our British money into your Portuguese coffers.
      We could go on all night like this but just ask yourself two things;
      1) Why are thousands of illegal economic immigrants risking their lives each week crossing the English Channel from France to England if the country is as bad as you say?
      2) Why is Portugal, once the richest country in the world now listed amongst the poorest?
      And just as a footnote, we probably wouldn't be discussing this subject at all if it wasn't for the British army, a couple of hundred years ago, protecting your 'Lusitainia' from both the French and the Spanish! 😉

    I would choose Silver Coast. Im a bit biased bc thats where my family lives but you get a good variety. You can live the quiet small village life with your quinta, be 5 minutes from a beautiful beach like Foz do Arelho among many, 5 minutes from a small city and less than an hour from Lisbon. But basically anywhere in Portugal is perfect for me !

  • @paulverluyten8993

    I basically agree with almost all of what you mentioned. I also would like to confirm what another comment said: Braga is a very nice, lively city. In the Douro valley, apart from the hotels you quoted, in our opinion a special mention should go to Vintage House hotel in Pinhão, right at the bank of the Douro river. We have been living on Madeira now for 7 years (coming from Beligum), and still enjoying every day of it (even if it is raining hard just at this moment...). Special mention also to Madeira's Orquestra Clássica, we go to most of their concerts and hope they will be able to play again very soon after the curfew is lifted.

    An important factor is access to services, some remote places require you to drive 30 minutes + for basic stuff. A town that has everything from bakeries, butcher shops, groceries etc within walking distance are the best. I've got an eye on a flat town but I'm keeping that town a secret.

    All ten of your suggestions sound perfect to me. But here's the thing... I'm an "old person" ( a phrase you used three times, BTW) who just turned 60, is retired and have 1/3 of my life in front of me. What I'm looking for most of all is a place, a magical place where people treat one another with respect. Where courtesy, manners and civics are still alive and lived on a daily basis. Most of all I want a place where neighbors follow the "Golden Rule," (Treat one another as you yourself would like to be treated.} It seems to me in my current location, that wanting these things is inappropriate to express an appreciation for these values. And when BTW did respect for "law and order" become a bad thing?
    So the beach and sunshine are added bonuses. Strolling through pretty villages and meeting new friends at a lovely cafe would be ideal. But I'd trade it all for a place where courtesy was the order of the day and the belief that all citizens mattered. Point me in the direction of genuinely nice people who welcome "outsiders" and I'm ready to pack! Thanks for allowing me to vent and I welcome suggestions.

    how is it possible that in the 10 cities mentioned, there is not one that was elected the best city to live in portugal? Viseu was considered the best city to live in Portugal for several years in a row. Viseu is the garden city, the city with the best quality of life in Portugal.
    Of all the cities that are in the raking (Viseu, Braga and Leiria) none have been mentioned.
    Not to mention the quality of life, in these cities the rents and the value of the house are lower than in the cities mentioned!
    Unfortunately they are making the same mistakes as the Portuguese and devaluing cities with less hype but which are considered the best ...

      It is always funny to se Portugal guides that forget the North (tourists only know Porto and Douro valley at most) namely Minho that is only the most dinamic and best region to live in. For the reasons you mentioned and more. Only national park, international airport, close to the best of Spain, friendliest people...

    • @tiagocunha8579
      @tiagocunha8579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Bracarensis exactly! don't get me wrong. in relation to the work they have done to promote Portugal, it has all the merit, they have done better than the Portuguese. but they are making the same mistakes as the Portuguese. portugal is not just the algarve, lisbon and porto! Portugal is much more than that. understand that everything that is not Lisbon and Porto and does not have the same level of investments and yet there are cities that manage to have a much better standard of living. and when they make a video about cities to live in retirement or to work at a distance, cities with rental prices or absurd houses do not make sense. the interior of portugal is very rich. I don't judge them because the Portuguese also don't value them! but I admire that they to a certain extent, being foreigners manage to be largely impartial, but in this video in my opinion they were very far from the truth.

    Wow that was a professional looking offering thanks and you two are a cute couple together and girl is a babe. Not sure where I will end up but it feels like time for an adventure. After spending my whole life in Colorado USA rolling hills or mountains and just nature nearby are a must. It sounds like that wouldn't be hard to accommodate in Portugal.

    But if you like cool weather that doesn't get much hotter than the upper 70s (23-26 at the hottest)... then Porto has much nicer weather than Lisbon or the Algarve.

    Nice resource for people who want to know more about the regions of Portugal to move to and/or retire. However may i suggest you stop referring to people older than you as “old people”. I’m close to retiring age and I definitely do not see myself as an old person. Most people I know in my age range do not refer to themselves as old. Even people who are way older do not want to be referred to as “old people”, especially if they’re sprightly and active enough to consider a move across the world. It’s ok to say “older people”, “retirees”, “people of a certain age”. Thank you!
