@@webportal6659yeah, I'm sure it will be great at least someday. Hopefully right from the start. If it"s not as groundbreaking as expected they should say so immediately though. For some people $70 is a lot of money.
I think part of the reason they kept supporting the game is because Sean and the team are really passionate about No Man's Sky and genuinely want to see this experience fully realized and making a bunch of money isn't a priority.
I just recently started my first game with around 12 hours of playtime so far. A bit rough around the edges still, but overall it's phenomenal. I'm so glad Hello Games kept their promise and fundamentally fixed the game. Assuming the upkeep for such a massive amount of data is sustainable, it's one of the truly greatest achievements in gaming history. Also, it makes it that much more frustrating when large studios like EA, Ubisoft, et. al can't get their crap together and fix a game after release, because NMS has proven it can be done.
12 hours in... There is so much more to see! It's a beautiful game. After thousands of hours of play, I'm still finding things I don't recall ever seeing before. And the sunsets are gorgeous.
I was one of the few fans at launch and it's been such an awesome journey watching it become what it is today. Yes, they lied and made a HUGE mistake, but they've spent almost a decade apologizing with their actions, not words. I am beyond excited for their next game, Light No Fire. Thank you, Sean & Hello Games for proving that you CAN learn from your mistakes.
No Man’s Sky is now my all time favourite chill game/cozy game. I don’t even “play” in a traditional sense. I just love finding a new planet, and wandering around slowly, taking it all in. Relaxes me & calms me so much.
NMS is a really good example of what a developer should do when stuff goes badly. Love the game, I do wish they'd fix a few bugs like base stuff (lighting) and I wish they'd overhaul the inventory stuff, but no one is perfect :)
Perhaps they shouldn't of lied to the public and just made the game they promised? Finally fixing it years after release is a huge L, imagine the sales of this game if they'd actually released it finished
@JimtheRangerTimmyyeah no they shouldn't and it will never be an excuse but you can't deny that they nailed turning around and getting to work to make the game what was promised and more in the end of the day. They didn't even slow down in favor of developing another title, scaling updates to a bigger scope instead almost a decade later. If that's a huge L to you you seriously got a problem 😂
I first tried playing this game in 2022 and even from then until now it's light years different. I can't imagine how different it was when it first launched. I thoroughly enjoy it now - play it almost every day.
No Man's Sky is hands down one of my favorite games. Its relaxing, exciting, and if you know what you're doing, easy to evolve in. The story is pretty good as well. I love exploring in No Man's Sky.
Trese Brothers Games does. There are a few devs out there that continue to push updates for their games. Very few are like HG or TBG. Star Traders Frontiers, for example, has well over 500 Free Updates in the last 7 years. Their newest game, Cyber Knights Flashpoint (which isn't even fully released yet) has over 100 updates and will continue like STF. Finding devs that love their games as much as the fans do, that listen and talk with their fans, that release updates for free and plentifully so... They aren't easy to find but they are worth supporting. Games made by gamers, for gamers.
Fallout 76. It has MTX, and it's built on the buggy ass Creation engine, but all of it's updates since launch have been free. One of my favorite games to circle back to (currently playing this season and might play next season since there's a big update coming)
For what its worth - gameranx - thank you for this video. Hello Games deserves so much recognition and as one of the biggest gaming channels, I hope they see that theyre appreciated as much as deserved
It's insane how the game released almost 10 years ago and has done nothing but improve ever since. Trully the greatest comeback in video game history and all the praise is well deserved.
If you turn off hyperdrive specialization in the difficulty menu, you can travel to purple systems immediately by locking a common star and using the “free explore on rails” star selector you can select a purple system and travel to it
But why would you do that though? You'll take out a whole lot out of the gameplay and for what I've seen... Exploring feels exactly the same in that system
@@Ron.vvli3t yeah, kinda weird how the quest ends before we even start to explore the new content lol, it would be nice if some of it was integrated into it, but we're at least getting the expedition later I guess
That initial release was all on Sony. Hello Games studio was flooded & a ton was lost in development. But when HG needed more time to finish the game, they were hard denied by Sony. As far as the game style a lot of gamers used to other toxic type games tried to ‘beat’ it or ‘get to the end’. There was no end. Actually if someone back then told me: it’s a D&D role playing game in space where you choose a multitude of paths, I would have understood the game quicker. In fact anyone starting this game now should do the same. I hope developers make more games in this style and I can not wait for HG new RPG, Light No Fire!
I haven't played in two years and I was feeling bored of my current rotation and this video pops up. Downloading it now, thanks for sparking that again
I absolutely demand an explanation! It sounds like someone doing a Falcon impression although the nuances are too perfect. I was thinking until the end it must be Falcon's brother or something. Does he have an illness, maybe? I NEED TO KNOW. THE VOICE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN NORMAL.
Right there with you! Day 1 player and loved it then honestly, just had a certain vibe i didn't have from any other space game and now they've gone above and beyond with updates🤞
You ought to give it a try, OP, and make a judgement for yourself; ignore the comment before me as it sounds like that person's issue is their issue, and not the game's. If you read the majority of comments, they're positive. If the game was as broken as this other person is trying to tell you, don't you think the internet would just tear the game apart? Honestly, I think you'll really enjoy jumping back in. There's been so many additions and visual upgrades that it might even seem overwhelming once you get back in. One of my favorite features of this last update is that they added inventory sorting as well as a way for you to store up to 18 ships in cargo; this is in addition to being able to summon up to 12 ships from your toolbar. They've also added deep oceans where it might be reminiscent of Subnautica (if you've played that.) Anyhow, good luck and I hope you have a positive experience like most of us! 😎👍🏻
This is good journalism you're doing here. Some channels, after the initial review, didn't"update" their take on the game. I gave Cyberpunk another chance and now i have a platinum. Apreciated.
Day 1 player, enjoyed my time at launch despite the issues and what was clearly missing. Seeing HG not only update to the game they promised, but beyond what they promised... and all for free. This is how you turn a game around.
My favorite mechanic that keeps me coming back is the language learning system like ill run around for hours collecting words lol! I hope they keep this idea with the new game !
In my heart, there's a child that dreams about exploring space, and this game satisfies that child (as it should, honestly, because it's probably the closest I'll ever get). Mad respect.
I pre ordered. Never have I been so happy with a company and game, I loved the game from the start. Rushed through Euclid. If all game companies did this, there would never be a bad game.
@@DANNYBEEGAMINGGwell he is not completly wrong tho you know if you don't have an amazing pc you won't have a great experience in NMS Vr and on psvr2 its good, has better optimisation but you have "bad" graphics so yeah on PC with amazings specs on ultra with a good headset with a good resolution yeah this should be one of the best gaming experience ever
At 9:55 when you describe no mans sky being empty and lifeless it sounded like you were just describing actual space lol. I am going to jump back into it and start a fresh save. Props to the devs that keep this game going and making good on their promises unlike a lot of studios
I appreciate that you can praise the devs for their commitment to improving the game while acknowledging that the game is admittedly pretty shallow and flawed, a lot of people claim it's now an incredibly deep game, which is a bit of a stretch
This. The game is mainly a HUGE time sink for people who have nothing else to do in their lives. It's just rinse and repeat, doing the same thing all over. It has like a steady 10k player count, which isn't bad but absolutely not stellar. That being said, it did make a comeback that's awesome, and I have to give the developers credit for that. It's not unique though, Cyberpunk 2077 did the same and is a vastly better game.
@@Deznaj666 problem is there is not a good reason to compare the two besides the fact they made a comeback. They are fundamentally different kinds of games. One is community based, with expeditions and exploration, and one is a RPG with a deep story.
Yeah, I've tried the game several times over the years after some of the big updates and...it still kinda sucks. It's the same frustrating and annoying gameplay loop of running around trying to find the right kind of mineral to get your ship off the ground. I really want to love it, but the gameplay is just not fun
Light No Fire will be the real test now. If it’s good, not even great just good, then they will have proved themselves. If it’s bad then that means they didn’t truly learn anything.
Considering recent additions feel like testing ground for Hello Games (fishing/new lighting/new ways of generating biomes/water physics, etc) I have to assume they are using NMS as their own beta test for LNF. If they aren’t, well, then that is a foolish mistake
Anyone remember the ARG they did for the first major update? It provided the community with clues to hint at the update, included fake websites, and offered Atlas branded cards to those who signed up. It was very exciting!
I remember the launch in 2016 as I worked in a gaming store, thought I’d *never* bother with the game. But after seeing a few people make videos talking about how good it is in 2024, I gave it a go. I’m hooked now!
Weve been playing as a group for the past week, I dont think Ill need to play anything else over the next couple of months. Its incredible what this game was and how far its come today. Its a Masterpiece...
It's a much more polished and deep game, but it's not a completely different game. It's literally the same lol. If you didn't the gameplay loop at release you still won't like it here. Also, and for all the patches combat still sucks.
It's kind of like The Elder Scrolls. Combat will always suck, but it's not game-breaking, and you're really here for all the other things you can do in the game.
While I still don’t think we should praise developers for releasing a broken and incomplete game, it is commendable all the work they’ve done to fix it. Although it had not set a good precedent for modern gaming.
They showed companies like Bethesda and Ubisoft that one can just release a broken game and idiots will bitch and moan but still buy and keep playing. But hey, free updates for 10k players...
@@Deznaj666Well, they could go the route of Hytale or Camelot Unchained and not release it until it's perfected. What's that? You haven't played those games? Well, that's because the release date on games like that is always next year because they keep finding bugs to fix in the millions of lines of code, overhauling it to a new engine so it doesn't look dated, optimizing the graphics so people on MS-DOS can still run it smoothly, and at some point will need to either release a game or go belly up.
I reached the point after a few dozen hours where everything started to feel the same. The only difference was wether the planet either has a red, blue or green color.
@@refi350 Which are also all the same. Let's just be honest, there is really not that much TRUE variety in the game. Just types of planets with randomized stuff on it. But hey, it sure looks purty, right?
It feels like this game just came out. I was confused when you started talking about "31 major updates" i was thinking: "damn they really been at work 247 to push that many updates that fast" and then it turns out its been 9 YEARS
I have yet to play this game, but I do own it, and as someone who loved Escape Velocity Nova and have been addicted to Endless Sky for almost 9 years now, I know I will love it when I finally get around to playing it. The story of the comeback of this game and the dedication of the devs, plus the support of its community, is a very great story indeed. Cheers to you, Hello Games!
12:52 video games are the only product that can be updated after sale. Outside the catalytic converter, no other universal upgrades have applied like new graphics and bug fixes.
To all the people who use the reference for a bad game having a "NMS comeback" the game would have to release FREE DLC the entire lifetime. Not sell you the rest of an unfinished game, I'm looking at you Starbreeze on that one.
I feel like they could've saved the generation version for already discovered and occupied planets. This is what Minecraft does specifically so generation doesn't get screwed up. No Man's Sky is a decently fun game, but I wish they took inspiration from Subnautica or something. This is more of a personal thing, but I wish the game had more of a survival focus. I also wish there were proper weapons and enemies. I'd love for crafting to be more refined as well.
I think they were going for more of a survival lite approach. You do have to watch your temperature, as well as your resources for your suit, multitool, and ship, and there are other external factors like the storms and attacks. You also have an energy limit. About the only thing missing survival-wise is a hunger and thirst meter and maybe the ability to sleep. Same with combat, as there are a few enemies with varying degrees of difficulty, but certainly not as many as most games. Maybe in a future update?
I was gifted this game right around the time the Next update came out. My friend told me the game was awesome and that they had made some amazing improvements. I started playing it then, and hoooo-boy, was he right. It is in my top 5 games as far as playtime on Steam. It's the only game I've gotten all the achievements. I come back multiple times a year to just keep playing. I freakin' love this game. This video is an amazing history lesson on what this game has been through. I really enjoyed watching it! Thank you! Now, I'm off to go play some NMS...
An hearty salute to Hello Games. I remember the letdown at launch. I didn’t play until early last year but I loved it and impressed they stuck with it. Hats off
I played NMS shortly after release with no idea about all the name-calling happening online. I liked it, played it, had fun. When the first big update hit I was amazed. I went from liking it to becoming passionate about it. I still play and have clocked many thousands of hours immersed in the intricacies of base building, exploring, following multiple intertwined storylines and just generally chilling. And still it changes and grows. Brilliant.
that feeling of warping to a new system and scanning all the planets and moons and then heading toward one to see what's there so you can decide what to name it
this game has gotten so much positive traction I installed it for the first time yesterday and plan on trying it today, this clearly has so much love put into it with all the updates and I’m relatively excited to try it out
While NMS isn't my favorite game, Hello Games is my favorite developer because of how much value they've given with NMS and the fact that they believe in their game so much that they continue to support it nearly 10 years later.
I'm so happy, that it's literally in the gaming slang as of today, that making incredible comeback with the development of the game you do the "No Man's Sky". As Internet Historian said: "I couldn't help but come up to the conclusion, that they were the good guys".
The last major thing they have to update is the player character animations, just to make them feel more intentional and not have that same melee jetpack thing from when the game launched.
The best thing Hello Games did with No Man's Sky is adding expedition mode. Each time a big update happens and they release an expedition, it brings me back to the game and feels like I'm playing it fresh. It's amazing
The fact that the game isnot only still playable but continues to go from strength to strength is a huge testament to the development. I thoroughly enjoy just firing it up now and then exploring new worlds
Forgive me if I've misremembered, but I remember a news article about a flood at their studio a few months before release. Which erased a large portion of the work they had done.
I have 140 hours into this game. I've played 3 different play throughs throughout the years. Always come back when there's a major update and it feels like a completely brand new game everytime. I love it and always find a way to come back to it.
Internet Historian has a very good video about this that really goes into depth about what went wrong and how Hello Games turned it around. It's pretty old at this point but it's still a good watch.
This is exactly the kind of nuanced take that NMS deserves, and I agree with everything you said. The good and the bad both. Overall, I'm very happy with the game, I don't regret the hundreds of hours I've put into it since the NEXT update, and I can't wait for Light No Fire to take what they learned and hopefully become a game far deeper than NMS was.
I struggle to get into NMS every time I try to pick it back up but I always appreciate the work they have done. I wish more devs could or would support their games half as well.
I was one of the unfortunate players that preordered it. I played it only a little before forgetting about it. I just came back to it because I saw it hat vr support. The fact that they have achieved this without any microtransactions OR EVEN DLC!?!? My lord, I’m so impressed. At launge it looked like Spore, and now it’s… you know… No Man’s Sky.
Thanks for this video. After the terrible release I gave up on following the game's progress. I'd seen things here and there about it but never paid keen attention. Your video taking things back to the beginning was perfect.
The greatest comeback in video game history.

I got back in last year. Had 15 hours to my name. I have 600 now and I’m obsessed..
IDK about you, but I'm waiting for No Man's Sky Classic to be released. IDK why everyone loves all of these "updates." 😝 (J/K)
No Man’s Sky is now my all time favourite chill game/cozy game. I don’t even “play” in a traditional sense. I just love finding a new planet, and wandering around slowly, taking it all in. Relaxes me & calms me so much.
Great video guys! 10/10
We're glad you enjoyed it!
Mf you posted this comment the same exact time the video came out you didn’t even watch it
bro it just came out what u talking about😭😭
You’d think Hello Games is paying Gameranx with the yearly number of “No Mans Sky is so good now” videos
I mean there is always major update that are good in each year, so....
@JimtheRangerTimmy The sales would be about zero considering they'd just be releasing it now.
I installed it again just yesterday to see all the updates they added and this video dropping just makes me so much more hopeful! Amazing comeback!
Enjoy it
Check out the expeditions. I think their fun and they are probably the easiest way to get a headstart early game.
@@webportal6659New one starts next week.
No Man's Sky is hands down one of my favorite games. Its relaxing, exciting, and if you know what you're doing, easy to evolve in. The story is pretty good as well.
I love exploring in No Man's Sky.
I WISH more companies gave free updates and post-launch support like this. Just doesn’t happen anymore.
Terraria
Stardew Valley just got a beefy update.
Fallout 76. It has MTX, and it's built on the buggy ass Creation engine, but all of it's updates since launch have been free. One of my favorite games to circle back to (currently playing this season and might play next season since there's a big update coming)
Tends to happen more with indie devs these days. Bro Force, Dead Cells, and Vampire Savior are three that come to mind.
6:02 I just realised there’s no countdown in this video. And I’m here for gameranx not ranxing.❤
The quest to unlock purple systems is really quick, it's worth just doing it
@@meikaishi it's too quick if you ask me. They promote it as a complete new quest line when it's easily done in 2 hours or something.
@@Ron.vvli3t yeah, kinda weird how the quest ends before we even start to explore the new content lol, it would be nice if some of it was integrated into it, but we're at least getting the expedition later I guess
The quest is broken for a lot people and the atlas path quest is very boring so I understand why people would want to skip it @@Ron.vvli3t
I was there falcon, 3000 years ago when Sean failed to deliver us their promise.
🤣😂
People tend to forget that there was also a massive flood where the Hello Games office was, and they lost a TON of progress because of it
not really an excuse
Lots of triple AAAs can learn from Hello Games in 2025. Sean and team have nailed the greatest redemption arc.
I haven't played in two years and I was feeling bored of my current rotation and this video pops up. Downloading it now, thanks for sparking that again
Is it just me or does falcon almost sound like a different person at first?
I thought it was someone doing an impression of him and they slowly got better and better as the video went on
Ai?
I absolutely demand an explanation! It sounds like someone doing a Falcon impression although the nuances are too perfect. I was thinking until the end it must be Falcon's brother or something. Does he have an illness, maybe? I NEED TO KNOW. THE VOICE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN NORMAL.
It definitely doesn’t sound like Falcon
Kind of sounded like Falcon from ~2016 or something, I thought it was an old video
Great vid. I knew the release was a bust but had no idea about the comeback story. Confidence restored and i might buy this game now
I've loved this game since Day 1 so everything else has been a massive bonus.
Right there with you! Day 1 player and loved it then honestly, just had a certain vibe i didn't have from any other space game and now they've gone above and beyond with updates🤞
Haven't played this since 2022. This makes me want to go back. Didn't realize they made so many changes.
Don’t, it’s been extremely bugged since update. Still not fixed, crashes your system or setup randomly.
They've also added deep oceans where it might be reminiscent of Subnautica (if you've played that.)
Anyhow, good luck and I hope you have a positive experience like most of us! 😎👍🏻
Sean Murray really kept his word.
I guess after over 170 hours of exploring, i should probably start the first mission.
In my heart, there's a child that dreams about exploring space, and this game satisfies that child (as it should, honestly, because it's probably the closest I'll ever get). Mad respect.
30 updates for free. Says it all.
I pre ordered. Never have I been so happy with a company and game, I loved the game from the start. Rushed through Euclid. If all game companies did this, there would never be a bad game.
Even though the PSVR2 is dead, I still consider getting it just for this game
do it and you won't want to play nms any other way
Yeah flying is quite the feeling 😵💫
Waste of money
@goldenfiberwheat238 tell me you haven't played nms in vr without telling me you haven't played nms in vr
I really want to love it, but the gameplay is just not fun
no man's sky soared so cyberpunk could pretend this shit is normal
Light No Fire will be the real test now. If it’s good, not even great just good, then they will have proved themselves. If it’s bad then that means they didn’t truly learn anything.
Considering recent additions feel like testing ground for Hello Games (fishing/new lighting/new ways of generating biomes/water physics, etc) I have to assume they are using NMS as their own beta test for LNF. If they aren’t, well, then that is a foolish mistake
The way they went about teasing the game is indicating that they care and did learn a valuable lesson lol
@@HiUnidentified I would agree
Dumb comment. They’re proven they’ve learned and are clearly taking their time releasing lnf so it’s not in a bad state
Anyone remember the ARG they did for the first major update? It provided the community with clues to hint at the update, included fake websites, and offered Atlas branded cards to those who signed up. It was very exciting!
This is the best example of owning up to your mistakes and following through on your promises anyway in the end. It just took a while haha
I remember the launch in 2016 as I worked in a gaming store, thought I’d *never* bother with the game. But after seeing a few people make videos talking about how good it is in 2024, I gave it a go. I’m hooked now!
9:35 - Battleborn Rule 34? LMAO
Saw that too 🍆
Weve been playing as a group for the past week, I dont think Ill need to play anything else over the next couple of months.
@@tenpoundburrito True, fair enough.
where da mods tho
That “bum bum bum” ultimate comedic timing. Bravo Falcon you’ve done it again. 😂
While I still don’t think we should praise developers for releasing a broken and incomplete game, it is commendable all the work they’ve done to fix it. Although it had not set a good precedent for modern gaming.
10000%
More videos like this please! This video was super engaging and very refreshing next to the endless "top tens". GG Gameranx
At this point they really do deserve some way to further monetise this game.
Pre-order the next one.
I like how we get this video every year, Hello Games did a stellar (heh) job with No Man's Sky
I reached the point after a few dozen hours where everything started to feel the same. The only difference was wether the planet either has a red, blue or green color.
You mean you never made it to the orange or purple planets?!
Dude stays in basic systems and is dissapointed about lack of variety. You should definetly try new aquatic planets.
@ okay? Sounds good
Nah
@@refi350 Which are also all the same.
Let's just be honest, there is really not that much TRUE variety in the game. Just types of planets with randomized stuff on it. But hey, it sure looks purty, right?
It feels like this game just came out. I was confused when you started talking about "31 major updates" i was thinking: "damn they really been at work 247 to push that many updates that fast" and then it turns out its been 9 YEARS
greatest redemption story in gaming history
With a steady player count of only 10k? Not really.
9:37 battleborn rule 34 huh
A man of taste
12:52 video games are the only product that can be updated after sale. Outside the catalytic converter, no other universal upgrades have applied like new graphics and bug fixes.
What about all software ever?
@ most software isn’t sold as a “finished” product. And even then there’s almost always a subscription.
@@Pollozapatos I was mostly joking lol but you seem serious…video games definitely aren’t the only product that can be updated after sale, just saying
Subnautica, now that is an EXCELLENT game. Shame about the sequel though.
One of the greatest games ever created.
I've been playing NMS for years now, take small breaks between expeditions and updates and it's always such a great game to come back to.
I was there on the launch day, I'm still there because I had faith, it's the first time I've trusted a game developer and I'm not disappointed.
An hearty salute to Hello Games. I remember the letdown at launch. I didn’t play until early last year but I loved it and impressed they stuck with it. Hats off
8 years of standing by their game is amazing and unheard of in todays day
I played NMS shortly after release with no idea about all the name-calling happening online. Brilliant.
Labour of Love fr
that feeling of warping to a new system and scanning all the planets and moons and then heading toward one to see what's there so you can decide what to name it
The expeditions are what keep bringing me back. So many awesome unique experiences with the community in them
this game has gotten so much positive traction I installed it for the first time yesterday and plan on trying it today, this clearly has so much love put into it with all the updates and I’m relatively excited to try it out
While NMS isn't my favorite game, Hello Games is my favorite developer because of how much value they've given with NMS and the fact that they believe in their game so much that they continue to support it nearly 10 years later.
Brilliant vibe, one of my favorite presented documentarys of the year so far. Also. Love the Melodic Metal!!!
One thing I love about them is that they've been updating the game on GOG day and date with Steam, something not every dev seems to do.
I gotta say, watching hello games’ character arc has given a large amount of goodwill to me
Forgive me if I've misremembered, but I remember a news article about a flood at their studio a few months before release.
