Finally, for whomever mentioned digesting, digestion is not required to have ate something. You could vomit it back up and still have ate it. It was likely done on a day plenty hot that the horse was desperately wanting water, and would had seen the hydrant operated before. Finally, I'm guessing at least some parts of some fire hydrants might be plastic or rubber, which is far easier to bite through than the metal.

I had a fellow scout that loved hunting (deer was his favorite thing to hunt) and he brought in deer sausage a few times for the troop. I miss deer sausage. It's too bad buying deer meat is extremely difficult to do due in part to how quickly the deer have to be butchered in order to be safe to eat, then add in that there is only a certain time of year for hunting deer, and there are no farms raising deer as they do cows, pigs, goats, horses, turkeys, and chickens (for common animals I can think of).
