I really enjoyed the first book and the other 2 books were just Ok.
I didn’t like the pace and end as well.
In general, it was a pretty good series, but I think it could be even better if not by some plot choices.

    "Naaaahhhh..."
Best short review of all time, LOL. Highly appreciate the long form surrounding it though. I don't want second person unless it's one of those Choose Your Own Adventure books from when I was a kid. There's some sort of disconnect when you read in the second person, and it says "you are doing this" and "you are doing that", but yet you have no say, no real decision in what's supposedly happening to you. That's what breaks it for me

This review was honestly the hardest one I've had to do. I am SO torn on this series, because my issues were that of plot, of not feeling like it was paid off, but that is super subjective. Clearly some people LOVED this series, and given how it started I get why. I just don't know if after over 1200 pages, the juice was worth the squeeze. The last two books probably just could have been one, there was so much just... I guess filler? Call it character development. But living in this awful world with these really flawed characters... It's a grind.

Great review. Would enjoy checking out whichever reddit post it was you mentioned.

It was from a while back, on the fantasy subreddit, I believe it was this one! www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/s/RFwlawtNDk

I finish the third book yesterday and I understand you totally. The trilogy started quite well, the second book was, meh, but the third books was such a big disappointing. Lots of flaws and silly things added just for plot convenience, useless characters added that didn't sum anything to the story, fast travelling?? really? A second magic system, why? There are so many things I hated in the last two books.

Not me sitting here feeling much more validated because so few people seem to think that lol. Not a series I dislike, just disappointed, because clearly Jemisin is an incredible writer, and the world could have been amazing. Just a different direction.
