    Thanks Ben. I really like your even handed approach to unexplained phenomena. Some folks want to cram an explanation in where it doesn't fit just to get on with the podcast. I appreciated your willingness to say 'we don't know' and talking about what it would take to find out. - Hope you get AC soon. It's 105 degrees F here and when the AC goes down it's treated as a life-threatening emergency.

    Ben, try a fan. Uses much less energy. If you want the physics, note that in still air you develop a layer of air around you that heats up from your body heat. The fan will dissipate it so heat will flow from you to the air faster due to the larger temperature difference. It will also facilitate evaporative cooling - even if you aren't palpably sweating, your skin leaks moisture all the time. You can also wear less clothing (perhaps not while making a video). If you're really annoyed by the heat, soak a t-shirt, wring it out, and wear it in front of a fan. Evaporative cooling works surprisingly well even in pretty high relative humidities. Mammals have been using it for more than 200 million years - go for it.

    Hi Ben, if amateur astrophotographers were to try and observe that region of the sky what sort of exposure periods would you require? Bear in mind to get a good deep sky image you may need an exposure of at least 1 hour on a 25mp camera through a 70mm scope. Are the exact RA coordinates of thew signal known? If you got a few hundred photographers taking data from those coordinates over a period of months something may blink.

    Not knowing anything about physics, I speculate that this is a neutron star in a tight orbit around another celestial object. The orbital trajectory of the neutron star moves its signal away from our line of sight for most of time.

  • @Elisabeth_Hass
    @Elisabeth_Hass ปีที่แล้ว

    If it's a pulsar, we have to calculate it's timing by General relativity and take into account red and blue shifts as well as investigate what could possibly be causing any discrepencies in the regularity of timing for signal appearance. Since we can't definitively identify the potential anomalies for pattern interference, it seems prudent to investigate less convoluded explanations for this signal phenomenon.

    Can a rotating object precess in such a way that it rotates rapidly, but the plane of rapid rotation is constantly rotating around a second axis which is itself rotating perpendicular to that of the main/fast rotation? The slow rotation would be with a period of 22 min or be related to that. Earth would receive a pulse only when both axes line up the beam toward us. In other words, can the object be pulsing rapidly, but most pulses are not directed toward us due to a complex tumbling so we miss them?

    Couldn't it be a bog standard pulsar with orbiting companion bodies?
    If the radio emissions at the poles are not aligned with Earth, it could be that we only detect signals when they're reflected or lensed by other bodies. With multiple orbiting bodies having different orbital periods the composite reflections that we do see will appear in different and seemingly random configurations each time, but with a consistent interval of the signal generally.

    Could you have two pulsars that are slow-moving, but whose fields collide due to opposite rotations in that collisions, you get a magnetic field great enough to generate charged particles. This would make it suspectable from other interactions and would possibly fit the 22-minute cycle as well as the variations in output.
    That's my best theory after watching this.
    Thoughts?

    If you go a mere 3.7 billion miles away from our home and turn the camera around you see the tiniest Sagan dot as your subject: point is, diffusion and dissemination of any signal, light or radio, must be, simple mechanics has it, completely non-existent/unintelligible after the smallest astronomical (big here is not big in space) distance between generator (natural or by 'intelligent' life) and random radial receiver(s). So, Mr. Fermi, associative logic tells us the size of Milky Way and with the number of stars in it tells there are a great deal of chemical reactions similar/equal to 'humans' ('worlds'), the simple, obvioius problem of them making themselves known to us and vice versa is a sticky wickett of large expanses between locations of technically advanced 'beings'. Physics has only so many laws that are also sticky wicketts. :)

They may have found our next habitable planet. We may need to go and find them and travel into interstellar space. It could take light years to find them. Or hopefully there are close by.
