- Today I am sharing how I harden off seedlings. I don't do it perfectly but it is easier than most recommend and it has worked for me.
At the end, I show you what to look for if the plants are getting too stressed and how I will help it recover.

Last year I followed another gardeners advice of setting seedlings out when you can catch 3 overcast days in a row. It worked great. Hoping it does the same this year.
That works great if you can expect overcast days. But we can't count on getting them this time of year.
Hello there, happy Sunday, I have just sat down for a cup of afternoon tea, I had a potter in the back garden and a little chicken chat with my girls, its lovely sunshine here today, I x do have Jane things need to get done. As my granddaughter would say to me 1 is better than zero grandma, 1 chore, or on days in winter when maybe 1 egg rather than a few to collect. So I shall enjoy cup of tea whilst watching your film, looks to get sunny for you too.😊I usually watch over again to take it all in,thankyou so much for todays film,take care,x
Sounds wonderful. I am tackling my huge list of garden chores one thing at a time. When I look at how much I have to clean up after all that snow it can be overwhelming. My ladies are really starting to lay now, I get 4 eggs a day. I will have plenty to share soon with friends who love fresh eggs. Have a great day, Hetty!
I wait until the nighttime temps are in the mid 40F's, then I set up a popup canopy and cover the west end with shade cloth. I allow some direct sunlight, move the plants inside the canopy, till they all get hardened off. I hope the nighttime temps do not fall below 40F, if they do I have to bring them all in.
With the number of plants I have to harden off, this works the best for me.

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Sorry to hear that. I still have not set up my hardening off set up, not because of temps this time. storms and wind, always something. The wind, even with fans going in the grow room can be as devastating as the direct sun.

I love Calla lilies and have never really had much success with them. I need to give them another try. They are such an elegant plant.
Generally, Im a pretty lazy gardener but this year thats not so easy as expanded planting. When the time comes, I just wheel a couple tubs of plants outside and set them under my cherry tree. Works great. I do put a tiny fan on them in my shop. I am in the upper midwest and my seedlings have been in my unheated shop off the garage since March 25. The shop is insulated and I have the plant sitting on a large 20 x 48” heat mat and some smaller ones too. The tubs of tomatoes and flowers are under lights and elevated over the mats with 2x4’s and blanketed to keep them toasty warm. Im growing way too many plants to keep in the house on my light shelf. At times when the nights got into the teens, I would work in my shop with a fire going in my wood burner to keep the temp higher for several hours. Seems like alot of work but it helps me grow more plants and not rely so much on the nursery. Next year I’ll buy two more large heat mats and maybe make a heat box to fit the mats. They are fantastic.
Sounds like a great strategy! It is a lot of work but isn't it what keeps us sane when winter just won't quit?

Just keep a watch on them. Different areas have different conditions. It also works to start them in the shade of a tree for a couple days before introducing them to the sun. I didn't give all the variables here but showed what I am doing. 😉

This year I am trying to be a bit more relaxed and a bit more tough when it comes to hardening off, I feel like I definitely overdo it as far as babying these plants into their transition outside, plants are a lot stronger than we give them credit for :) Also, I LOVE your hat!
I did scorch a couple but most of them are doing fairly well. We are getting cold and rain, only one day of snow so most of these are back in the house. Some I was able to put into the greenhouse. Hopefully next week will be a tad warmer. I fell in love with this hat when I spotted it at Target back when we left for our cruise. I love it too as it really breathes and my head doesn't get so hot as other hats.

Often I just put them out into a shady spot as well for the first couple of days that gets no direct sun and that works too then move them out into more direct light. Some shade loving plants don't need the direct sun at all but many of these were the sun loving types.
You didn't say anything except you put them out and bring them back in. The fact that you have an enclosed area for some plants is not a how to
Seems you missed it, this is not an enclosed area at all, it is open air. Thankfully it spurred others to add helpful suggestions as well in their comments I found helpful.
