    This is an awesome video, my buddys miata had the issue where you would turn the key and nothin would happen. We made the little bypass and it started right up. Thanks for the great info.

    So this was 100% my issue and this fix works however to be even more frugal and a little safe.... if you take the old sensor out and just either solder or crimp the two wires on the pigtail you can plug it in without any risk of it coming out

    Great thanks, I've got a P0704 on my ODBII Diagnostic tool thing and I wondered where the hell the clutch switch was. Now I know,
    Cheers, great, and very detailed, video. Subscribed and liked.
    Dave (Gloucester UK).
    EDIT NOTE - Found out why I've got the code. The clutch switch is just dangling! Had some clutch work done recently including replacement of a broken clutch lever, reckon they didn't fit the switch back on at the end! Email sent to the garage.

    Yes, I have this problem on my '90 but since I haven't driven it in two years, I haven't had a chance to fix it! ;) I'll save the $$ and go for the jumper option. My '90 is in US and my '03 in Europe and the European one doesn't have the clutch switch. I haven't had any problem starting it accidentally in gear in 12 years, so comfortable. BTW, seems like an easier jumper fix would be to just cut off the wires from the switch to the harness about an inch from the harness, keep the harness plugged in and just splice the wires.

      Ive been thinking about replacing my ignition switch because i get a clicking/ticking sound coming from under/behind the steering wheel while cranking the car especially on cold starts but I am going to try the clutch switch bypass first

    i like your videos! I have a problem in my NA, every time I press the clutch pedal, the brake warning light on the dashboard turns on. We haven't been able to solve the issue.

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a strange issue.
      I wonder if the wiring that goes to the brake master cylinder is touching on something?
      If the fluid level is too low in the Master Cylinder, it will trigger the brake light to come on. If the wire to the sensor is damaged, it could have the same effect.

      I haven’t had an engine light come one due to the clutch switch.

  • @mousepd
    @mousepd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If you bypass this with the jumper. Will the engine light remain on? Mine is showing Code: P0704 " Fault in Clutch Switch". Otherwise, I guess I will replace the switch if the jumper does not clear the code. Thanks!

    There is a gray color switch on top of the clutch safety switch what is that for?

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two switches on the clutch pedal assembly. The bottom one that engages when the clutch pedal is down, is the interlock/safety switch.
      The second switch at the top of the pedal assembly “clutch position switch” tells the ECU if the clutch pedal is engaged or not.

    Awesome, i think im going to do the bypass since its easier on your car

  • @xenteon4691
    @xenteon4691 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So what exactly does the clutch switch do

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  ปีที่แล้ว

      The clutch switch is a safety feature that requires you to have the clutch depressed when starting the car. If the clutch is not depressed, the car will not crank / turn over. Before this feature was invented, you you could start a manual car while it was in gear and it would jump forward and potentially hit the car or wall in front.

    If you have an NB Miata that switch is tucked behind the ECU. Not easy to reach...I think i will be doing the bypass.

  • @350zKiller

    Where did you order your clutch switch? I’ve been looking for one online and I’m having trouble finding a new one with the wire piece that plugs into the connector up above. All the ones I’m seeing are just the switch and no wire. Also what gauge wire did you use for the bypass to find out if it is your clutch switch that’s going bad?

    Great job. Any real benefit to keeping this? I heard removing the mandatory clutch in saves a part of your transmission, that I can't recall lol, on mandatory clutch in startups! Been looking for this bypass for a while just didn't know what to search. Thank you greatly. The clutch in feature is a thing that isn't standard around the world I believe as well.

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only real benefit of the switch is to prevent the car from jumping when started while in gear.

    • @JavierVillalobos
      @JavierVillalobos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did this with a jumper and got the same results! Easy! Also adjusted my clutch pedal while I was down there.

    • @jxengine
      @jxengine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another benefit with the jumper option is that there will be less wear on the crankshaft thrust bearings. The engine may just live a tad longer.

    I have a 1990 miata and the clutch switch is in front (drivers compartment) of the clutch pedal arm with what I believe would be a plunger switch that the plunger comes out when the clutch is depressed. Is this right? I don't see any plunger coming out now. It also looks like the switch is threaded through the mounting bracket with an adjusting nut also. Am I right on this?

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are actually two switches on the clutch pedal. The one at the top that allows the car to start when the clutch pedal is deployed. The other is at the bottom of the pedal stroke and sends a signal to the ECU that the clutch is engaged.
