The part number for the coil is Deere 07736. It's listed at $182.67 on the Deere online parts catalog and shows it's available. Some research appears to indicate the coil is identical to Homelite #07736 and Mitsubishi KE04023AA. Good luck!

John Deere prices for parts are ridiculous. BUT the foam air filter is about %5.50 which isn't bad.

I'd rebuild the too end & replace the ignition coil but just be careful with parts such as the ignition coil because brands like Stihl change both the ignition coil & crankshaft half way through the model & after a certain serial number so I do my homework when it comes to searching for ignition parts for lawn equipment now.
Both the crankshaft & ignition coil on a Stihl hedge trimmer that I fixed had a differently timed crankshaft as the keyway was in a different spot to the later serial number machines so it's very important that you do have a parts list for them.
I ended up having to order an OEM ignition coil from an eBay seller whose located in Ohio in the U.S. & I live in Australia !

I got a 105S from a guy that got tired of gas mixing. He also lost the gas tank cap. It took a couple of weeks of searching to find one that fits. It cost me about $9 but that was a big difference from the John Deere price of $35+!!!! I gassed it up, put the cap on and checked for leaks. No leaks. Started up on 4th pull. I had replaced the fuel lines and filter also from on hand stock. The guy had evidently used ethanol gas. The fuel lines were almost rock hard.
One other note... NO low or high adjustment screws on it!!! BUT it fired up and idled like a champ. It has enough power to handle brush blades.
The threaded post is smaller then a Stihl. I am gonna try to modify a Stihl bicycle handle shaft and put it on the JD. Or I will swap the trimmer heads so I can put on my saw blade for clearing brush.

I have one very similar to this, but I wish I could get a consensus on who makes it. I have the John Deere XT120, and I love it, just picked it up today and used it on my lawn. It's perfect except it burned my arm and the trigger is really tight. Also, the gas cap leaks because somebody put the wrong one on it. It leaked in my car on the way home and it leaked on my back porch. The gas cap is $50 alone! But I'm going to bite the bullet and get the part and wear arm protection and hopefully figure out how to loosen the throttle.

Four years late to the party..
If it were me, I’d say keep it. I’ve started a little “side hustle” fixing free trimmers that aren’t running and considered no good, by some.
Also, I just started diagnosis on a John Deere trimmer today. I can’t quote the specific model; however, from the looks of it, mine is even older than that one! (Ex. The intake cover is held on, by a single swing-arm clamp). I’ve never seen another JD trimmer, so I hope to get it running again.
Nice video, btw. Gives me a direction for some other things to check.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Follow up.. It’s a JD 200G trimmer. Got it running the other day, after many unsuccessful attempts. That was after cleaning up the spark plug, muffler, new fuel line/filter and I had to re-string it when the old line had it’s final pull. I adopted your trick: pouring some fuel straight in the spark plug hole. Though, it won’t stay running for long before kicking itself off. Hmm..
I’m unsure how it starts otherwise, since I’ve never seen a trimmer without a primer bulb. However, I enjoy the thrill of the problem, all while learning new things in the process.
