    MILK PAINT RECIPE:
    1/2 gallon skim milk
    1 cup white vinegar
    1/2 cup hydrated lime
    color pigment
    3 cups Plaster of Paris
-Mix 1/2 gallon skim milk and 1 cup white distilled vinegar in a bowl.
-Let sit for 2 hours or more. (I let mine sit overnight)
-Pour the mixture into a cheesecloth lined strainer. Rinse a bit with water. As it is straining, pour a half cup of hydrated lime (I used pickling lime) into the bowl.
-Gently squeeze out some of the liquid from the milk mixture. Put the mixture back into the bowl, with the lime, and mix thoroughly.
    -Add color pigment.
Here is the link to some color pigment from Amazon: amzn.to/3k5KQIr
The other option is getting paint formula at your hardware store.
    Mix this thoroughly.
-Add 3 cups Plaster of Paris. amzn.to/3yWXQ9I
-Mix until smooth. You can use a beater to get rid of any lumps
    -Store in an airtight container!

First, I love how your life goes on while filming. Kids and husbands and cats coming and going. Grown sons hugging moms always gets to me. Second. If you try white and need to add a colorant (if it’s not white enough on it’s own) I have a cookie business where I decorate cookies with royal icing and I use titanium dioxide (food grade) in my icing to make it whiter. It’s a powder. It’s in lots of foods and other products. It super whitens.

It was a humble piece but now it is so lovely! I do like the darker color paint, and the wax finish made such a difference. I like that you left all the history of the chest stay, all the dings and gouges it earned through use. Thank you for doing all the research for us. Now--why buy commercial paint? We are in a serious drought where I live, so thank you for the soothing, peaceful sounds of rain. 🥰

Adding plaster of Paris would probably set the paint faster. I thought at first your first batch had dried out so quickly because you added the plaster of Paris, but perhaps it was the lime? I love that you are always ready to try out an idea that comes into that creative mind you have and I love that you are not afraid to try your hand at anything! I will try your formula myself one day. You know, years ago dairy barns were painted red by farmers because they used what was at hand: buckets of milk and plenty of rust!

I loved the partially stripped look of the drawers that you stained over. It gave it the most interesting character. Would never have thought to do that. And who knew you could make your own milk paint? That had to be pretty inexpensive as well I would think. Thanks for the great video. Listening to you trying to talk above the deafening sound of nature around you at the beginning was nothing less than charming. It almost felt like we were sitting there with you on your porch!

You may or may not have known but there has actually been a paint shortage in some areas around Atlanta. I’d heard of making paint, years ago, and just never tried it but I’m totally impressed with your recipe and results. I liked the first shade of gray that you used but I also liked the 2nd one, very much. I will price each part and add it all to get a total before I try it but I feel like it is far less than $30.00 a gallon, like the neighborhood store paint costs.
Thank you Miss Mary- we just love you and are so thankful for all you do. And sharing it!

Making your own paint was such a great idea!! By the way, the lime neutralizes the acid in the vinegar. That way you aren’t left with an acidic coating on your wood.

    • @jairusfussy5207

👍on the chemestry. There’s more to it. Before painting you want to brush wood with vinegar and let it dry. It will help if the wood is acidic
