I like how you mentioned about how we shouldn't sing along. Truly, our voices are different, and although I love listening to Ed Sheeran, I make use of my bass voice: not purposefully, but because it's more comfortable for me.
But I have a problem: unconsciously, I tend to tune into the same pitch of the person I'm listening to.

I'm 45, always fantasized about being a singer, yet hated my voice. only two months ago I made up my mind and took singing lessons. not before long I started to change my mind about my own voice, and even started to develop "the heart of a thief". Somehow TH-cam suggested to me one of your videos, and I liked your way of breaking things down. I still have got miles to go, so I think I'll stick around for a while ;)

I can't believe it is this easy to find my singing voice. After humming the song and felt the sensation as instructed by Dr.Dan, I suddenly was singing the song at ease and know where to place my register more accurately. The humming technique really works! Singing the song with just the "ah" was very hard at the beginning. i sound ugly at first. But as I gather myself with better breath support and focusing on how I feel rather than how I sound, it works wonder. I was able to sing much relax and with less tension! Thank you so much!

    • @fecdiamondbar
      @fecdiamondbar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

As I continue to practice with this technique, I realized why it is so effective. It is because when I am humming the song, I can feel how the vibration/resonance of the sound move within my chest or mask or head area. All I need is to remember those feeling and place my register correctly as I sing with the lyrics. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not a singer and hate my voice something fierce but singing helps me relieve stress, I find myself comfortable singing along with Tenors at the lower range. Thanks for making these vids they're very interesting.

I'm so glad to hear that you find singing a stress-reliever and that you enjoy the videos! Remember, the beauty of singing comes from the joy it brings you, not just the sound of your voice. Your comfort in the lower range is a great place to start exploring your voice further. Keep enjoying the music and remember, every voice is unique and has its own charm. Keep singing!

Thank you so much Dr. Dan. I have been singing and vocalizing (mostly in rock cover bands) for nearly 25 years and have struggled constantly trying to find "MY" voice. But within minutes of listening to you describe it in your video all songs I do now generally feel as my own... I cant thank you enough!!!

    Hi Dan,
people say "sing as if you are inhaling" will release tension because the element of "pushing" out the air is eliminated. But, by "inhaling the voice", wouldn't it be true that the sound you produce would be further back and not forward? any comments?
    Thanks

Hey Dan, I'm 13 years old and I'm aware that my voice is still changing but I have established that my range is rather low and I would like to know when doing warmups or singing, how to identify what is poor technique or how to expand my vocal range correctly. Nonetheless, your videos are a great help! thx

I am heavily into voice acting with a wide range of voices I can do...
This sounds cool but it interferes with my singing. With talking I can add rasp or gravel easily. With singing its not that easy.
I start singing and my brain thinks I can impersonate a voice just like voice acting and I know thats not true but my vocal cords just dont register that.
I am so used to doing many voices that I cant find my own.

When I sing I tend to match the timber of the cover artist and harmonize instead of singing the actual melody. I'll do this for classical as well as contemporary music. I'd be happy to have a voice like yours! Seriously you sound great! I use to record myself on online karaoke and I stopped because I cannot stand the sound of my voice. I do sing at live karaoke and I just try to have fun singing with friends. I tend to not sing by myself for most songs.

Mesmerizingly clear Dr Dan. Man you really cut through the clutter Thanks for sharing. I will begin to apply this immediately!! However, I'm actually not a singer, but an aspiring voice actor, who is trying to find and more importantly sustain his authentic speaking voice
I think my best speaking voice happens when I forget myself and I'm unselfconsciously engaged and connected. Unfortunately over the years anxiety has contributed to unhealthy vocal habits and dysphonia. So as you seem to suggest, while my challenge is to practice and become attuned to healthy vocal techniques and sensations until they become habitual across a range of emotions and emotive interactions,...
l; I believe my greater challenge is to let go and embrace (at the conscious level, I seem better when I'm unselfconscious) a new more authentic expressive range, and therefore personal identity. So do you have any videos on letting go and embracing this emerging "new natural" authentic personal identity And or can you direct me to helpful advice online?
However, I could be asking the wrong question -- If I am , I would simply appreciate any feedback you can share
Keep up the good work Dr Dan!!

So not to follow cover artist for your own voice, but what about getting the right pitch or we should modify the song to the pitch you are comfortable? Most of the time I am comfortable with the song's note but whenever a high notes is there my voice seems strained, while I can breeze through the song that one part pulls me down for that should I drop the song to a lower key? But that brings the song from head voice to chest voice and loose it's magic. I am confused!!

thx so much. ur really good man. u know its like when i play guitar i zone out sometimes and groove hard putting everything into each note. most of the time i half ass play and its the same when i sing. mostly its lazy n kinda in tune. like mt guitar. i wanna really nail it. i think it really depends on the mood im in and my spiritual level. plz do a soul and spiritual through your voice video

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials u know i never knew i cud sing let alone sing n play at the same time. cant tell u how much i appreciate ur time n efforts doing these vids. i just spent 2 hours playing n singing trying to put as much into my voice as the guitar. 4 me it does depend on the mood i am in 4 how good i do. i think practicing spirituality and soul and get the feeling of the song you want to sing in your head. like blues think about blue times or love songs put love thoughts in your head u know. i think you can probably tell me better what im trying to say so i can understand myself better. it wud be an awesome topic tho. and also i think alot of times you find your voice failing trying to sing ur idols songs. man ur the best vocal teacher out there thx so much.

Hi Dr Dan, I've watched a handful of your videos now and am wondering whether I can safely assume that all the advice you provide will apply to traditional church choir singing as well as contemporary genres, as you've mentioned that the reverse is not always true. I have been getting lessons from a classically trained semi-professional singer for over a year, just as a hobby, and I'm happy with my progress in the traditional choral style we work on. However, when it comes to sounding better when I sing contemporary songs to myself or in karaoke, are the technical and warm up tips you give on your channel things that I could also incorporate into my choir practice/performance, where the purpose of those tips sounds applicable to both?

Your problem is when your natural voice and tone is in the same register as Frank Sinatra and you hate it -_- My voice wan't born in the right decade where almost every successful modern singer is an alto or tenor. I find myself singing harmonies just to get by because its easier to sing with other people in higher registers.
