It was started by Thyagaraya chetty (on his name only TNagar in Chennai is named after) and TM Nair. NTR is a follower of Tripuraneni Ramaswamy garu. But when he wanted to join politics he was more influenced by periyar. So he was dravidian ideologist from the beginning. He just changed his idol from Tripuraneni to Periyar.

Nagarjuna pulled of Annamayya, Bhakta ramdas characters pretty well despite being an agnostic. Balayya failed in panduranga movie despite being a staunch bhakta..
