I remember crossing that bridge for the first time when I was a kid. We were going to Indiana to see an aunt and uncle. My cousin who was with us was terrified of course I was pretty worried too. And we’re both offspring of iron workers who are the people that build these structures, obviously that type of work was not in our blood! Good video, thanks

Back in the 1950's you could walk across the bridge, stop and get out of your car and enjoy the view...there was a sidewalk on the southside of the bridge. Parents and I did it on the trip over to Windsor.
You made the statement at about 3:30 into the video that the Ambassador Bridge saw the transit of escaping slaves via the Underground Railroad. Impossible, since the Ambassador Bridge wasn't opened until 1929 and the American Civil War (and the reason for the Underground Railroad's existence) ended some 64 years before.
There is another bit of information you need. Within 5 years of completion of the Gordie Howe bridge, the Ambassador Bridge will be dismantled. That was a stipulation of the Canadian government, who flipped the bill for the new bridge

@@fella6676 , that was only if the twinning of the Ambassador permit went through, this was a permit requirement, now that the permit application has expired they have to restart the permit application which is probably not going to happen.
I heard on TH-cam that once the Howe was opened that the Ambassador had to come down within 5 years. They said that was part of the deal to get the Howe built. From what you're saying the Ambassador is to remain.
Your right. There was a time the removal of the Ambassador was to come down within 5 years of the Gordie Howe opening. That was if the twinning of the bridge was approved, but it wasn't so the Ambassador Bridge is getting the needed updates. It's gonna stay.
1:01 WAIT!!!! Did I hear that correct??? Completed 9 months AHEAD of schedule and slightly UNDER BUDGET!!! That is unheard of today!! Nowadays almost everything is BEHIND schedule and ends up being OVER budget!!!
Yeah. Right! Tech and communication should make these projects quicker if not cheaper, yet it seems upside-down and backwards! To be fair there were not as many regulations and regulators a century ago. To get the simplest construction project done, permits, inspections and quality control have slowed and made things much more expensive. Still, the Ambassador stopped, removed half the cables and replaced them with better material, and still finished 9 months early. Pretty impressive. Thanks for the comment! :)
Can't wait for the new bridge to open, traffic on Huron Church is ridiculous! it's like the Wild West with inconsiderate truckers using all 3 lanes both ways!
This will be torn down before 2030. Good riddance. The owner has stunted the growth of the area by choaking the transportation route between the US and Canada. It will be condemned by Canada, and with no income from the bridge once the GH bridge opens, the Ambassador bridge will be useless and a hazard.
Hi @spazog. Matty Moroun was a tough bird to deal with and caused delays to the new bridge for sure. His son Matthew is working with the Canadian Govt, to bring the bridge back into safe condition now. I expect the Ambassador will be there for quite a few years from now. It has a historic designation in the US, so not likely to be torn down any time soon. I appreciate your comment! Thanks.
