I believe that tangela and it evolution tangrowth might actually be based on a hairy yo Kai Keukegen while the Pokédex doesn’t say it anything related to the yo Kai it design March the appears of the folklore it actually based off as It do change size it when evolved into tangrowth and it a filthy hair monster as the seaweed supposed to represent as it hair.
I am always impressed with these episodes. They teach me so much. Also, I am one of the people who thinks that everything in gaming could've been inspired by multiple different cultures at the same time. :3 Just like Weavile and evolution having also Egypt connections :D
If anyone is interested in the kamaitachi, yu-gi-oh has a set of monsters called the yosenju that are also based off them! Their entire play style is based off of coming in, attacking, and then retreating.
In gen 2, Weavile was the only one that could learn it's signature move: beat up, a move that hits multiple times based on the number of pokemon in your team. Probably a reference to the "three separate gods" part
I'd be hella down to hear about this one. Especially since Meowth got Viking forms now. I legit thought it was just longcat (And that we need a galarian/alolan equivalent to be tacgnol)
You know after making these connections to Sneasel and Weavile, I just started to question, why the frick doesn’t this thing know razor wind naturally (or at all)?! I mean it makes perfect sense
For a more mechanical answer, they might not learn it so theres more of a gap in thier type coverage, they only learn one phsyic type move (psyco cut) so they basicly have one (if they have it) answer to their biggest weakness, being fighting types.
See? This is one of the many reasons why the Pokemon franchise keeps calling me back as a thirty plus year old. It's not only a fun RPG with super cute and super cool critters, but it's also educational when you start digging deeper into the inspirations behind certain concepts. It's all so fascinating, and I really love these videos.
Always good to see the origins of my favorite type. They really do have some fascinating folklore inspiration behind them. I hope we can see a video on Froslass and Yuki-onna before winter's end!
This was awesome. And I'm still hoping to see some Digimon videos because Digimon have inspirations based on numerous myths/legends/folklore/religious theology, along with a video touching on how Digimon Survive has as a major plot point in it's storyline that Digimon have existed as kami/yokai and were summoned as partners, and helpers to both good and evil Onmyoji long before the creation of the Digital World.
Hey Gaijin, I just wanted to say thank you for the awesome videos you create, they both interest and inspire me. You're videos have helped me alot recently, I Actually had to do a school report about Ancient Japan and your videos gave me great information and really helped me in the long run, keep doing what you're doing. Love your videos.

I've known these Pokemon since their inception and I never had the even slightest thought about what they were. The Mt Silver bit is an amazing flavor win. Damn Gaijin fantastic video!
Hey Gaijin, I was just thinking; Maybe the reason why Wheezing of the Galar Region are more dapper looking than their counterparts in the Kanto Region is because they are filled with noble gasses!
Thanks guys for teaching me the history of the sickle weasels And now I have learned something from the two of you And you have a Very merry Christmas keep it up boys
Hmm.. This this sound like a ninja a bit. Fast attacks, mysterious, use scythe / claws. Even working in groups. Here something funny sneasel and Weveal are dark blue. And we all know, real ninja wear blue. Food for thought.
True, but ninjas aren't agressive by nature. They are recon units, specializing in intelligence gathering. They only fight when having not much choice left.
some guy named Elck That’s an excellent counter argument to the possible ninja association and brings a bit of a problem. My only counter to it is They are sociable creatures according to the Pokédex. They need to survive and scavenge for food. You can consider it as a last resort and adding more evidence to ninja category for survival. It might not be a one for ones. But close enough. How much do you rate it on the ninja scale?
You know, given how much I do appreciate Sneasel and Weavile, it has gotten me thinking... what are the potential yokai connections of Riolu and Lucario. People seem to really love the whole talk of auras and how they let you do awesome things, but I truly want to know the impressions of what the Japanese had with Auras, and if there really is something among the Yokai that are rooted in the nature of Auras.
One I gotta be a sticker for. These fast weasel boys go for the kill. The godly muses actively avoid being lethal. On one hand that’s a detriment, until you look closer. While it might not be part of their leveling moves, false swipe, a move that cuts just enough to not be fatal, can be learned via tm. So, it’s just a more animalistic version of our slashing super ferrets.
New ep! Wee!! I love this series. I even got the book you recommended! Need to plow through it still! And Pokemon is such a treasure trove; magical and gyrados being the carp that swam over a waterfall to become a dragon... no I wonder is feebas and milotic the same or do they have a different folklore?
Oddly, all I can think of at the mention of sneasel being the best depiction would be Ookami, where you had three of them working together on bigger scythes
I would believe they are Ice type simply because they are acclimated to icy mountainous environments. If they were to be thrust into a desert or tropical landscape, then they would likely have to adapt and evolve, or would be ill equipped to deal with the newfound areas. Exactly why they are weak to fire. It wouldn't be necessarily because they use ice as an ability, but because of their acclimation to their natural habitat making them dependent on being there to thrive. If they were removed from that environment, and evolved and adapted to a different one then could very well be Dark/Fire, Dark/Grass, or Dark/Water. I don't normally watch this channel. I haven't seen any videos of yours prior. I just happened upon it from a random person's Twitter, but your research and animated visuals in your videos are quite appealing. I only clicked, because Weavile is one of my favorite Pokémon, and wondered how they could be related to a yokai. I have seen Kamaitachi in media before like in Naruto, and in gameplay from Nioh, but never knew their lore or what they were called. Thanks for a succinct run down on the lore.
Thanks to the earlier video on the Kamaitachi, I was able to make the connection between Sneazel and Weavile's yokai origins and their current designs. England and Scotland are known for having some pretty crazy Winter weather in the countryside, especially in mountainous regions, so it's no wonder they are appearing in the Galar region too.
Sneasle and Weavile need something to be more worthwhile competitively. Since they're Dark/Ice type, maybe they could have a move like "Black Ice", where non-steel (because there are special footwear that allow safe traversal of icy surfaces), non-ice (because icy surfaces are their element), non-fire (because they can melt the ice) types (should I make rock immune too since sand and salt are used to make ice safe?) will slip and fall (meaning take a little damage and lower defense 1 stage) every time they come into battle (kind of like Stealth Rock and Spikes) and every time they use a move that increases speed and/or is a priority move (like Quick Attack and Quash).
This is pretty damn accurate and i know nothing of Japanese folklore but the one thing about Sneasel that confuses me is why Sneasel suddenly gain's a 3rd claw on both his hands when evolving into Weavile (as for why they have feather's, well most likely it's to keep themselves warm given how they live in frigid mountain ranges and tundra's)
I would like to thank the manga twin star exorcist that I recently picked up for letting me in on what the phrase Kyu Kyu Nyoritsuryo means in english “carry out without delay”
So i actually heard about this Yokao before... sort of. There is a monster for D&D 5e in a book called the Creature Codex called the Wind Weasel. It's a medium sized, blue weasel that cuts people with razer claws and turns into a whirlwind. Besides the person sized thing, it's pretty accurate. Most humanoid creatures in D&D are medium sized btw.
Wrong. You can find Sneasel along the Icy Path before reaching Blackthorn City (Last gym of Johto). You all even took this info from Bulbapedia, the least you can do is double check your work.
You should check out some of the Yokai-centric archetypes from Yugioh like Mayakashi and Yosenju. the core of the Yosenju archetype is 3 Kamaitachis that follow the general strategy you laid out they did, among others
Don't forget that Sneasel can also learn other ice-type moves such as Ice Beam, Hail, Icicle Crash, Avalanche, and Blizzard, as a way to reference the kamaitachi living in snowy mountains.
Even funnier, Mt. Silver is literally (and I'm using the actual meaning) Mt. Fuji. Sure, it's not a volcano, but as the most prominent peak of that mountainous area seen from both regions, it's pretty clear that the domain of Red himself is Japan's signature peak.
Monster Rancher had an entire monster breed based off the Kamitachi. I forget the name of it but it was slim, weasel-like, with extendable blades on the forearms, high speed and strength stats, and damned near every part of it was a weapon.
Yaaaay, my favourite pokemon and favourite yokai! Now if only it learned a party heal to match the weird legend of kamaitachi healing you after cutting you
