    I love mine. I have never tried it with the Alpha pads but I did change to the Focus pads and they were a huge improvement over the stock pads. They also look right when attached. My 400i and K7XX are gathering dust at this point.

    Hi Zeos, between HE-500 and LCD-2, which would you go with? Accessories aside? Just judging the headphones themselves.

    Z Reviews ATH-M50x or Sony MDR1R? I'm currently using hd 598, can't decide on my next pair. Someone recommended the k612 pro's but I want my next set to be closed back. Been looking at bose soundtrue but those don't seem that good.

  • @DavidKataraGvozdenovic
    @DavidKataraGvozdenovic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do they compare to HE-400? I've been trying to figure this out for months now because I want one of them. HE-500 is pretty expensive, but if the difference is big enough, I might go for it.
    Also, I'm not interested in anything else like 400i and such, but just these two. I'd just love to hear what you think of the sound difference between these two because I can't get my hands on them to hear it for myself.
    I've seen and read tons of reviews on both, but lots of conflicting info out there. I've also seen your vid on HE-400 and that was great.
    Can you take a minute and help me decide? Cheers man, love your vids!

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David Katara Gvozdenovic It has been a while since the original 400's were on my head but the 500's are definitely more balanced. Where the low end of the 400's were the show stoppers the 500's are elevated everywhere.

  • @rickywinataa
    @rickywinataa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I auditioned both HE-500 and HE-6 in a headphone meet and I feel like both headphones are remarkably similiar. HE-6 perhaps sounded a bit more detailed for me, but it could be affected by the different amp I tested on HE-500 (tube amp)
    Personally, I don't find HE-6 to be well worth the money when HE-500 isn't all that different compared to it

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ricky Winata In that case I will take the HE6's off your hands.. $300 sound good?

    Found one at goodwill today. Yeah, full kit and everything. Wire, papers, extra ear cups. On the shelf, $9.99 in it's case. Up to now, best headphones I've had are the same pair of wired Apple headphones I've had since highschool that came with my iPhone 5. Needless to say, fairly happy with it.

  • @uniongrunt
    @uniongrunt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should I get this or the HE-400i? I like neutral, but I'm open to "fun" headphones as well. Is it worth trying to find this headphone anymore? It's discontinued and dead on every retailer I could find, and I can barely even find it used. It seems that the 400i is replacing both the 400 AND the 500 in one fell swoop. Should I just buy the 400i and let this beast live on in memory?

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +uniongrunt Nothing sounds quite like the 500's. If you want a taste of fun those are certainly them. The 400i are precisely neutral and while great I don't define it as fun.

  • @bradengould609

    I'm slightly confused by your "W" shape sound signature. To me it sounds like you push the low bass, mids, and upper highs way up which leaves two big recessed dips in the sound. Could you please clarify!
    And yes I remember impressing my girlfriend with headphones some time ago, good ol M50X. We both know about its flaws, but it's a good bet for a college student low on cash and needs it to do everything and go anywhere. Sadly most of our friends have beats...

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jefafa Von Richthofen It isn't precisely like a W it is more a metaphor for every sound sounding enhanced in some way. Check the sound demo out, someone there said it clarified the W signature I described.

    Hey zeos! How does the he400 compare to the 500? You've reviewed both. Which one would you choose if you were on budget? Is it worth the extra 250? I can get 2 400 for 1 500.

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      2airtoon21 Don't know why you would need two pair of 400's but they are both great but these are more usable. The 400's are bass hammers more than balanced headphones. So if you want balanced you have to spend the bucks.

  • @Necronisxi
    @Necronisxi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just got a pair of these since a friend offered me a deal I couldn't pass up. Came with some jerg pads, a custom cable and can cozy are in the mail. I've got $250 to get a DAC/AMP combo that will do these some justice, ideally something that emphasizes the lows and can add that extra punch electronica craves. Buying used seems mandatory to stretch that into something respectable. So far a used ODAC seems ideal for the DAC...but the AMP? A DIY kit from garage1217 seems promising. Something Schitty could also work. I've heard good things about the Emotiva Mini-x a-100 with them. Heck, a good old O2 might work and save some cash. Thoughts?

    • @RojasTKD7
      @RojasTKD7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Necronis _ Many people have recommended the Schiit Lyr 2, as they provide plenty of power to drive the HE-500.
      I think I might just go with the Audio-GD NFB-15 (or NFB-12) DAC/AMP combo. Maybe the NFB-11, if I can find used at a good price. The Audio-GD unites are all in one DAC/AMP unites with plenty of power for the HE-500s. TheNFB-15 and NFB-12 are said to be a bit warmer than the Schiit stack (at leat the Magni 2 + Modi 2, not sure about the Lyr 2) and the NFB-11. Really tring to decide between the NFB-12 and NFB-15. EDIT: Just contacted Audio-GD and the NFB-12 and 15 have been discontinued. The NFB-11 is still available.
      Just started looking so maybe other have more info.

    • @hcrc53
      @hcrc53 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm almost exactly in the same position. I just got these headphones and have 200-250 to spend on a DAC and amp.
      I mostly narrowed my search down to the Schiit Uber stack or the NFB 11, but there's a good $100 difference between those two for me (audio GD being more expensive).
      What did you end up deciding on?

    • @RojasTKD7
      @RojasTKD7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin Glover just got my NFB-11 today. it sound very good and very clean, but I find it a little bright, especially with the HE-500 (thought the 500 where a touch bright to begin with). I installed used the "Equalizer APO" app on my computer and brought down the treble across the board -3dB and bumped up the bass some to warm thing up a bit. sounds better. I may eventually get a garage1217 Project Polaris to connect to the NFB-11 and use it as the amp potion, or a Lyr 2.

    Are these good for gaming?

  • @PolloliciousGaming
    @PolloliciousGaming 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, I just discovered your channel and you sound like a guy that knows his cans.I was wondering if you could help me decide what headphones to purchase. The choices are either the he 400i, he 500 and the Philips x2. They will be used for music and gaming, whichever provides the best of two worlds.

    • @RojasTKD7
      @RojasTKD7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PolloliciousGaming For gaming and music I'd recommended the X2. Comfortable, great soundstage and really good for music, gaming or movies.
      The 500 are a special beast:
      Heavy.
      ergonomics Can be uncomfortable for many.
      No longer in production, so you have to find one used.
      Many say the 400i soundstage isn't very big and less ideal for gaming. I won't know how true this is until mine arrive in a week or so.

    • @Psztyk236
      @Psztyk236 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RojasTKD7 Hi, can you please update? I have dillemma between X2 and 400i, I'd get 400i but the soundstage bothers me a bit as until now all my cans were closed and I want to try something more open at last

    I got an LCD-2c for $600 and I bought a pair of these on ebay for about $400 because I've always wanted one :p It sounds like it's going to be a good compliment (don't have the HE-500 yet) so here's to hoping it was a good decision.

      @mikeross4384 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I eventually sold both, HD600 killed them for me. 2c sounded way too rolled off in the treble and the hd600 just suited my tastes better than the he-500.

    Mr. Z.. can you please enlighten and tell what the difference is between the 400i's that you reviewed recently and the 400S? Was checking their spec sheets and besides the difference in sensitivity and impedance they both looked the same ( the 400S even comes with 3(!) earpads in the box.. well I could order the focus pads and would still save a lot of money ). The old 400's have gone down to $250.

    Just got my HE-500 today. Mine came with focus pads installed (pleather and valor pads in box) and what looks like the clip on headband pad from the DT-770s. I paid $404 and feel I did well.
    I don't find the 500s as uncomfortable as some, but I already have the Brainwavz angled pads on order (much more affordable than the Alpha Dog pads, cuz $60 vs $25) as well as a shorter replacement cable with a 3.5mm termination.
    So far I really like these headphones. I'm running them off my mobile DAC/AMPs (Sound Blaster E5/ JDS Labs C5D), so there is probably room for improvement. Looking into a more powerful setup and hopefully these great headphones will sound even better.

    Woah, you're saying that you only fully recommend the HD600's, or HE-500's at the beginning yet you seemed to completely freak out over the Philips X2's? Would you say the HD600's completely through the X2's out of the ballpark for price to performance or did you just forget about your Philips X2 review?

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nolan Rammel Not at all. The X2's are still some of the best built and most FUN and comfortable cans you can have. The 600's and these step out on stage as attempts to be reference. Which means neutral response curve and just a different delivery methods. So I wouldn't game in the 600's or these but would in the X2's.

      Hey! Just curious, does your Jotunheim have the Balanced DAC? I'm getting the Jotunheim and possibly interested in possibly getting these headphones along with it, but if it's too much to even power them maybe not.

    • @Atodaso
      @Atodaso 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheLeiterSide It does... and I think it's plenty powerful. I was listening to quite a few vinyl rips, which are often a lot quieter than regular .mp3 or CD tracks. I also listen to music way too loud (says everyone else). This is also my first pair of open cans, so that probably plays into my original comment.

    • @blitzz18
      @blitzz18 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey again! So, I got my Hifiman He500 and Jotunheim. I'm in the same boat as you, where I need to turn it up all the way to get close to my desired volume. Did getting a balanced XLR cable help with this at all?

    • @Atodaso
      @Atodaso 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It did, though I find that I still need to turn it up quite a bit with that. I actually just bought the Emotiva XDA-1 DAC and UPA-200 2-channel amplifier, which I have been using with the Hifiman HE Adapter (intended for use with the more demanding cans they used to offer), and now may have found the dragon I had been chasing, but that's an amp that pushes out 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms (bought in preparation for my imminent HE-6 purchase).
      That said, the 3-3.5 watts at 38 ohms (I believe) that the Jotunheim pushes through the balanced cable is better than the single-ended out, but they would greatly benefit from something that pushes out more juice.

      +john lin Got all of them in my possession now. It's difficult to compare all of these headphones particularly as these are just initial impressions, but here goes.
      Should mention in using a mobile DAC/AMP to listen to these. My more powerful desktop DAC/AMP should arrive next week and it should do a much better job at driving the HiFimans and might make things different.
      HD 600 as everyone mentions this is a very good sounding headphone. Among the most comfortable headphones available. Considered very neutral with Treble that is polite and never harsh. Mids and vocals are lush and sound very good. Bass is ok with decent mid bass punch, but lacking in extension and rumble. To me the bass sound incomplete because of this.
      X2 comfortable and very fun with considerable bass in terms of quantity (mid bass), particularly for an open back. treble is good and not to bright. mids are also very good. This is a well balanced headphone though not as detailed or resolving as the others. The bass is very good though it doesn't extend as low or rumble as much as the HE-500 or HE-400i. Renownd for it's sound stage and many choose it for gaming.
      HE-400i Excellent sounding headphone. Very clear and clean sound. Nearly as comfortable at the HD 600 and X2, and easily superior to the heavy HE-500. The highs are more resolving the the HD 600 and X2 I believe and a little less bright then the HE-500. Though it has less bass in terms of quantity than the X2, it extends better and has some rumble down there. Sounds smaller (soundstage) then the X2 and HE-500. The HE-400i is a big step up in build, comfort and weight than the HE-500 or original He-400. The cable is far superior and though most complain I find the length perfectly adequate for my use. AND... 2.5mm connectors FINALLY!
      HE-500 by far the heaviest and can become uncomfortable because of it weight and headband design. Mine has a Beyerdynamic DT 770 style snap-on head cushion to help with this, without which the stock headband starts to cause pain on my head after 30 to 54 minutes. Also very clear and clean sounding with Very nice and balanced sound, that can be a bit bright at times but usually not too hash to me, but a brighter than the others to my ears (more noticeable on some track than others). Mids are also nice and vocals sound good. The he-500 sounds more open than the HD 500 and HE-400i (can't really compare to the X2 yet). Bass is VERY good less then the X2 in terms of quantity, but more than the others. The HE-500 also to extend the lowest and has more rumble than the others. This is the one I think I'd choose for listening to music most often. If traveling the lighter more comfortable and HE-400i might be what I grab as it's more flexible and easier to store. The old style HiFiMan HE-500 cable still SUCK.
      Personal taste will determine what everyone likes best. But for me (and this is subject to change and mood):
      HE-500
      HE-400i
      X2
      HD 600
      I know many think the HD 600 is the king of all, but the lack of bass extension makes it less preferable to me, but this is dependent on you musical taste and preferences as well.
      again this is a brief impression after spending a little time listening to them after the 400i arrived today. I'm also not an expert on headphones or audio nor do I play one on tv. ;)

      @RojasTKD7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Anthony Otadoy to give a little more substantive answer. Just from what I have read, as I haven't heard the 400.
      The HE-400:
      has more treble
      more recessed mids
      more bass impact
      The HE-500
      is closer to neutral
      treble is less accentuated
      mids are more present
      bass/mid bass is less accentuated
      Again, I haven't heard the 400, so it's based on my research.
      It's up to you to decide what signature you might like more.
      :)

    • @RojasTKD7
      @RojasTKD7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gray Au I would not say the he-500 are, "over the top across everything with accentuation". The are well balanced are neutralish, as Z himself mantion here in the comments. Also see Tyll's of Innerfedelty's review of the HE-500 (actually the HiFiman line).

      +Anthony Otadoy Got the HE-400 today. Waht I said before was generally true, but the difference isn't as big as I expected. the 400 has a bit more bass, but just a bit. The mids and vocals sound better to me on the 500. The 500 sounds a touch brighter to my ears. Overall I think prefer the HE-500, but they both sound great. At the price i got the HE-400 used, it was a great deal.

      @kencoldblood 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      poochzag8 I upgraded from the HE-400 to these a couple years ago, and as clean as the bass is on the HE-400, I never listen to them anymore because these are so much better.
      My O2 does power these pretty well, but to be honest I feel more comfortable using something with more power. I usually listen with ReplayGain and at those levels I'm sometimes at 3 o'clock on the O2 and it feels like it's running out of steam. My mind knows it should be OK, but I feel better with more overhead (which I get from an old Head-Direct EF1).
      If you don't use ReplayGain and don't listen to very high dynamic range tracks (classical, soundtracks, etc) the O2 should be plenty, and even then it does the job.

    I actually prefer the AD 1000xs over the HE 500s, I've owned both and sold the HiFiMans. Their sound signature and clarity just gives me the sound I've always wanted far more than the HE 500s, boost the bass a little on my FiiO e07K and slide that into my E09K and the clarity is immaculately clear. Trance has never sounded better, Z, are my ears broken for preferring the 1000xs over the HE 500s? I DO realize that the HE 500s are more versatile, don't get me wrong.. the bass extension is tighter and the planar drivers handle much more before they start to crackle and distort. But the AD1000xs are a million times wider in soundstage, and a lot clearer. I just can't, sorry HE 500s..

At max volume they are loud enough to be listenable, I wouldn't mind just a little more volume (one more notch would do). But it VERY acceptable and sounds good. I'm surprised my phone can drive them to a listanable level and sound good.
      Of course, I'm not getting the best out of them straight out of my phone, but it really is amazingly good. I don't really plan on running them from my phone often, or at least not with out my C5D DAC/AMP. But it nice to know I can, and even enjoy it.
      Just tried with my Note 3 and similar results.

      Still from what I understand to get the most out of the drivers you better off with something to can swing lots a current to ensure you get the best dynamics and impact from the HE-500 and it's inefficient Planar dynamic drivers. I'm happy with my portable AMP, but plan to get something more powerful and see if it gives me a bigger smile.:)

      +john lin The M9xx should push them just fine. Not sure if a tube would do much to better them.
