      I used to have bad asthma attacks when I was a kid. So instead of taking me to a doctor or getting an inhaler, they would get me a can of sprite and let me watch a horror movie to "get my mind off of my asthma". To this day, I still have nightmares about Freddy Kruger. I do have a strange liking to Sprite though.

    Fun fact: the actress who played Samara in The Ring is Daveigh Chase, AKA: Lilo from Lilo and Stitch and Chihiro in the Spirited Away dub.

      So the girl who was my favorite lead from my two favorite animations that made me beg to have TV in my room, is the also the girl that made me get rid of the TV in my room? ... I need time to process that.

    I was in the Army when this movie came out. One of my fellow soldiers, after watching this movie, took his TV and locked it in his wall locker for a full month. Because of that, I didn't watch the movie until it had already been out for over a year.

    The Ring was the last horror film that genuinely blew my mind, though it was not the last horror film that I enjoyed (though even that has been very rare). I first watched it not long after it was released on DVD back in 2003.
    I remember hearing about The Ring when it first released in theatres, but I had no idea what it was about. I knew nothing about the plot, characters, story, etc. I guess this was right before film marketing started the practice of showing the most important parts of upcoming films in the trailers, thereby ruining any mystery they may have. But, I honestly didn't even know it was a horror film, supernatural or otherwise. I may have assumed it was some sort of psychological or suspense thriller, but what I did know is that it had something to do with a little girl. But that was the extent of my understanding. I went into The Ring completely oblivious to what I was getting myself into.
    I borrowed the dvd from a close buddy of mine while visiting him, and I wound up leaving his place late at night, and by the time I got home and settled in, it was maybe 1am or a bit after. So, I plop the dvd in, lights off in the middle of the night, watching this movie in my den, and when that little dead girl crawled out of that fucking TV screen, I literally screamed "WHAT THE FUCK?!" and my mind was fucking blown. I was in a stupor of amazement. I was not remotely prepared for anything that insane. Honestly, as a horror fan, that scene pretty much spoiled any subsequent horror films for me, because nothing scared me or creeped me out after that. So yeah, thanks, The Ring.😆

      Terrifying movie. I saw the American version first, then the Japanese one. Creepiness factor still holds up, especially the music in the "samara crawls out of the well" scene in the American one... Oh holy hell 😬

      Yeah. I actually really agree. I don't hate the original film, but the protagonist in that film was so utterly useless, which made me not care for her as much as they wanted me to. The husband character was far more compelling.

      @Flamesof24 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      OneMinuteMovieReviews It's likely prerecord, most people don't realize to get the video quality most youtubers produce this can't be done in a day. Plus in order to keep a schedule of videoes coming they have to have these sitting around usually a few weeks ahead of time. Likely this has been done for a little bit.

    Glad I wasn't the only child scarred by this movie. I saw it at home when I was 11 and for years I would fall asleep with my TV on (with a timer set so it would turn off automatically when I was already asleep). No, in retrospect this makes no sense but I guess my thinking was 'she can't turn my unplugged/off TV on and come through if the TVs already on.'

    Female vs Male characters in Japanese films: it all boils down to culture. In Japan the man always takes the lead in everything and must be presented as the smarter one, as the one who understands complexities and figures out mysteries. Watch Japanese TV news. The lady broadcaster will read the entirety of the news. The male broadcaster will opine/give an editorial, and the lady broadcaster will enthusiastically nod and intermittently respond with "Oh, I see," "That's a great insight," or "hmmm, I hadn't thought about that", etc., always to support or stroke the male ego.
    Obviously, American female characters are NOTHING like their Japanese counterparts. Hence, in the American version the female lead character shows more substance and seems to be better fleshed out.

    • @helheimpanda
      @helheimpanda 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reminds me of the fact that Japanese medical school purposely lower down entrance scores for females so that more undeserving males enter the med school and become doctors even though the females did way better. Just common misogyny embedded into Japanese culture.

    I own it on VHS 📼 , DVD 📀 , Apple TV , I saw this movie in 2002 with my oldest brother and cousin she was 17 was a senior in HS , I was 12 Years Old and I’ll never forget how terrify this movie made my brother and I , I’ll never forget my cousin Samantha boyfriend at the time call the house and he knew we were watching the movie but we didn’t know that he knew ( my brother ) why this man called at the exact same time we was watching the movie and said 7 days
    My brother and I panicked
    This was in the poconos , Pennsylvania my aunt had a beautiful house it was huge and in the middle of the woods it made the movie even scarier good times when life was simple I miss the early 2000’s

    I watched this movie for the first time when I was 8 and it really hooked me on to loving scary movies! It was the first one that really got to me. I was absolutely terrified of it but I couldn't get enough of it. I'd watch it with my friend and she would chicken out and turn the TV off when it for to Samara. We would turn the lights off in the house and would go online and watch the "cursed video tape" and wait to see if we would get a call and we would get so freaked out we ran around the house thinking Samaras ghost was chasing us. One time after watching the video tape we ran down the hall and the ac air intake on the ceiling with a the metal latch swung open, must have been loose. We looked up at the ceiling where it fell open, it was a circle in the ceiling that look just like th ring from the well in the movie, it scared the sh*t out of us and I think we stopped watching The Ring for awhile after that. I also told my parents I made friends with Samara and I wanted her to be real so bad...(lol weird I know)
    I would have so many nightmares about her I'd wakeup crying but somehow I kind of enjoyed getting scared by it all.

    The Ring will always be my favorite horror movie. Always. It’s not like most horror films because it really gets under your skin. The music and color scheme add onto that feeling, as well. It’s also interesting that they leave little hints and Easter eggs throughout the film. If you pay attention, there are rings in a bunch of the shots (sort of like the ladder scene).

    I've always been a fan of horror, so foreign horror films were never out of my reach even when I was younger, so I do really enjoy J-Horror, but I have to be honest, The Ring is the American remake of a J-Horror that's just simply better. I like Ringu, but it's a tad overrated, and I feel people just always say the original is better because they feel they have to. Mainly because most people have this mentality that every remake should be condemned right off the back, and that's pretty hackneyed especially at this point.
    But yea, I will never back down praising The Ring more than Ringu because it's just simply done better overall. Sure the American sequel wasn't that great, but to be fair, neither were the Japanese sequels/spinoffs as they ran that series in to the ground. Same with Ju-On.

    I had a similar experience. I watched this on DVD with my 3 brothers and mother. I watched it maybe a year after it came out so I would've been at least 8. After we finished it my mum went to the bathroom and used her mobile to call the house phone. Being the youngest, she might not have intended for me to answer. But unfortunately I did. You can probably see where this is going. I had severe trust issues after that. Still do.

    I hope this doesn't come across as plain smart-assery, because I really mean it as friendly insight into a foreigner's mind.
    Trying to pronounce a foreign name is never offensive. It kind of sucks if somebody just says a name whatever way they want and not really care, but giving it a try is very endearing. On the other hand, not trying at all can make it seem like the person's name doesn't matter to you.
    The "I'm not even gonna try" approach is something I've only ever seen in Americans, possibly because they rarely speak any language other than English and thus find it hard to wrap their heads around the process of learning languages besides their own.
    There are words in foreign languages that you won't be able to pronounce "correctly" (like a native speaker) once you pass a certain age because of the anatomy of your mouth and the way speech muscles develop. That's why we have accents. Say a Japanese name with your American accent and say it proudly! I bet it would make you happy if a Japanese reviewer said "Chris Stuckman" instead of "I'll butcher his name anyways, so he shall remain nameless".
    More on topic: two thumbs up for the review, thanks Chris!

    This is one of the very rare instances where I think the american remake is by far superior to the original (I've seen both). Not only were the horror elements better and incredibly effective, it also added subtle commentary about the omnipresence of media in our lives and how completely addicted we are to it, even moreso in 2017 when everyone and their mother have a smartphone permanently attached to their hand. Samarra probably should upgrade from VHS to bluray or internet streaming though 'cause I seriously doubt anyone still has a VHS player nowadays though...
    On another note, i absolutely HATED Ring 2. It ruined some of the elements of the first movie that should've been left shrouded in mystery (ie. Samarra's origins). In the first movie, it's implied the "adoptive" parents travelled the world in search of ways to conceive a child and that they may have in fact found some "unnatural" means by which to do this. I much prefer this idea: sure, mess with the natural order of things, but you get an evil being for a daughter as a trade off... Don't they get that sometimes it's WAY better not knowing things? Just look at Rob Zombie's Halloween and how it felt the need to explain in excruating details why Michael Myers is who he is. He couldn't just be evil, he had to be humanized with a past of abuse and mistreatment... Kinda diminishes the treat of Michael when all you've been shown from the beginning is a whinny brat crying about seeing his mommy. Tangeant over. No interest in Rings.
    The Ring along with The Grudge are two movies I can no longer watch, I am that scared of them. The dread and anxiety I get seeing just bits of the scary scenes is enough for me to not sleep at night. I don't know what it is about them... it gets me. I can watch incredibly gory horror flicks without flinching but throat rattle sounds and ridiculously creepy dead little girls is the death of me.
