    Presentation of the Air Brake Test on a 2011 IC Conventional Style School Bus (Pre-Trip Inspection), using the acronym "SALSSP", in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
    S: Safe Start
    A: Air Leak Test
    L: Low Air Pressure Warning Test
    S: Spring Brake
    S: Service Brake
    P: Parking Brake
    The air brake is applied, when the yellow diamond button is pulled. It is released when the same button is pushed.
    ** At approximately 120 psi, the airdryer pops. It sends bursts of air back to governor to stop the compressor from pumping air. **

    Thank you Mr Bellemare for this video. I have been driving school bus for 9 years and the company that I worked for didn't require the air brakes endorsement as their buses were all hydraulic. I am with a new company now and all but a few are air brakes. I took my test on Monday, and along with a "killer" pre-trip, I aced the air brake test from watching your video. I even watched it while practicing and was able to remember the steps, psi info, and correct terminology. Thanks again for the awesome, informative, and extremely helpful video.

      +Lilredxx00 Thank you so much for watching and congratulations on your air brake endorsement. I am glad the video helped.
      I personally think that all authorized heavy vehicles should be equipped with air brakes.

      +JJ Bellemare no problem sir keep up the good work with the buses.do you know if the air brakes test the same for every state or does it vary?

    • @jjbellemare3732
      @jjbellemare3732  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Will do. You are welcome.
      Excellent question. While the air brake test roughly follows a similar format no matter what the circumstances are, it may vary slightly depending on what state, what district, what training program or what type of vehicle you are tested on.
      For instance, a tractor-trailer trainee tested in Indiana will follow a script and sequence that is a bit different than a school bus trainee tested in Georgia. The air pressure level at which the airdryer pops might be approximately 125-130 psi instead of 120 psi. The inspection of the parking and service brakes might lead to the air brake test in one case and conclude the same operation in the other.
      I would encourage trainees to review guidelines carefully, so they do not stumble on one minor detail. It is important that they be on the same sheet of music as the examiner, since any discrepancy in the way they perform the air brake test is considered an automatic failure. That said, the overall logic and principles behind air brake tests remains the same, no matter where you are or what vehicle you drive.
      Thanks again for your feedback. It is much appreciated.

    • @jjbellemare3732
      @jjbellemare3732  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching, Marvin Martinez. The key for learning the air brake test to the point where it feels and looks like it is easy is to practice.
      I remember of this basic computer class I once took in college: during the entire semester, students did not get more than twenty minutes of hand-on practice on the keyboard. It was such a waste of time.
      Do you have an opportunity to practice the test on a school bus? The more time your instructor allows for you to practice, the better it is. When I attended trucking school, another trainee and I practiced the air brake test every single time we had a break, one day. We must have performed it a dozen times each. Before we knew it, it felt like it was easy.
      Keep us posted on your progress. I wish you the best.

    Mr. Andrew Rothkoft:
    Thanks for your comment.
    I successfully tested twice in my career, as a candidate / trainee (class A - 18 wheeler in Indiana & school student + passenger endorsements in Georgia).
    While air brakes might account for a small portion of the total score, failing (any detail of) air brakes in Georgia (& Indiana) is an automatic failure (setback?) overall.
    I genuinely appreciate your input. Yet, I spend a lot of time with new drivers emphasizing a strong command of air brakes. In Georgia & Indiana, it is not optional. It is a must.
    That said, every state, county, driving school, examiner... has his / her / its own spin and / or set of nuances, when it comes to testing guidelines. In your state, messing up air brakes might cause limited damages.
    With all due respect, I will not advise trainees to minimize to importance of air brakes in Georgia.

    • @jjbellemare3732
      @jjbellemare3732  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, Mark Gloverville. At approximately 120 psi, the airdryer pops. It sends bursts of air back to governor to stop the compressor from pumping air. I would like to emphasize the word approximately. Depending on the vehicle, the pressure at which the governor cuts the air may vary from 115 psi to 125 psi or even more. I generally advise new drivers in training to stick to a script (for instance a 120 psi) and focus only on significant discrepancies. Certain states, districts or driving schools have new drivers demonstrate the cut in (approximately 90 psi, indeed), as well as the cut out (approximately 120 psi). Others do not.

      JJ Bellemare u sound like SnL's Wild and Crazy guys. Isn't the air leak test 3 Parts? The first part being no parking brake or service brake applied you should not lose 3 pounds of pressure in a minute, the second part apply the foot brake and hold it for a minute and not lose 2 pounds of square pressure in that minute. Then Fanning the brakes until the buzzer sounds and the parking brake releases?

    JJ may I recommend a suggestion? At 4:12 you say not to worry about the brakes. I have had older buses that pop automatically but when the bus is started and the air compressor is running it the diamond valve leaks slightly and the bus has rolled. I always recommend to pull the parking brake as an extra precaution to ensure it is engaged fully. Otherwise Spot On! Nice job. :)

    Hi do you have anything on section 14: Special Requirements for Texas commercial Motor Vehicles?

    • @jjbellemare3732
      @jjbellemare3732  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching, Elizabeth.
      I am not familiar with Section 14. Are you referring to the Texas CDL training manual?
      Either way, I think that all of us will benefit from becoming more knowledgeable about the subject.
      Please, give me further details and let me know how I can help.
      Thank again.

    Hello! I'm going to take the skills road test in NYC for an L restriction removal. My question is, what will I need to know for this test? Is it just a pre trip and break test and driving?

  • @arothko8939

    Testing brakes/ knowledge of brakes only accounts for 5 points on test.

    • @jjbellemare3732
      @jjbellemare3732  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The air brake test is a deal breaker. You will not get credit for your pre-trip, unless you pass the air brake test.

    Thank you ! )))I trying to get P-endorsment right now. And I have question. My mentor said when I make service brake test I not must keep weel. Weel is free. And when I apply service brake (push pedal) I check also bus not moves left or right. If bus stop and not move left or right that means servise brake works properly. Is it true ??? I mean I not suppose keep weel in my hands when I make service brake test ? (sorry about my not perfect English)! ))

      +Ivan Ivanovich Thanks for watching, Ivan.
      Even though states and / or districts conduct the air brake test in the same manner for the most part, nearly each of them has minor differences (number of psi, order of the sequence, etc.)
      Keeping your hands away from the steering wheel as you test the service and parking brakes makes perfect sense, indeed. Your mentor is right. It will give you an opportunity to confirm that the vehicle does not hang from side to side, as a result of you applying the brakes, and that they work properly.
      What state are you testing from?
