Most 5 year old girls liked barbies, I liked watching Sho slice and dice zoanoids. I am an otaku for life, but Guyver will forever and always be my #1 manga and anime.
Back in the early 90's, I went to a comic con (back when they only had comics) and saw a guy selling pirate anime tapes, he had the first 5 episodes of Guyver, It was my second anime (Akira was my first) and I always go back to it.
Was that in New York, at the Hotel Pennsylvania? I bought one episode of this show for about $7 from a group of guys calling themselves "Tokyo in Brooklyn" who dubbed the laserdiscs onto VHS. I also bought a straight Japanese copy of Golgo 13 (no subs, no dub) for $15 and a few episodes of Dirty Pair. My friend bought some Saint Seiya episodes and from a different seller, I also bought Akira. I still have the akira VHS on my shelf, beside my Blu-Rays and under my PS4. The other tapes are probably still at my mother's house. In Brooklyn.
Also checked em out at blockbuster! The zoanoid data files were hype inducing lmao. That narrator is just going balls out for some of em he just reads out their weight and height lmao
I’m desensitized to anime violence, but I can’t imagine seeing this show back in the day, when you had to rely on bootlegs and there was a limited amount of stuff circulating. In the US, even explicitly “adult” animation wasn’t this violent or gory.
As an anime fan pre-internet era... when this anime first hit Blockbuster Video in high school, we were like... "Is there more of this cool *stuff*?!?!"

God how i missed the days when i went to blockbuster videos store to rent this series along with Vampire Hunter D. The series reminded me of power rangers mixed with ultraman with him transforming and fighting monsters
I found this anime as a 9 year old kid in blockbuster video. I can still remembe the VHS box art for each two episode tape. Theres just so many things this anime did well on the budget it had. From some beautiful scenery during fight scenes to the incredible music that brought emotion to this piece of art. I hope one day for a guyver resurgence. Agito Makishima will forever be my favorite of Steve Blums vocal performances.

Never even knew this gem existed until 1 fateful day I went to the thrift store... I saw this and it looked interesting... I loveee movies about monsters and creatures and I especially like dystopian films... this merged the two with a futuristic blend... I can say nothing but good things about this I fell in LOVE with this show, I saw the 2005 recently to but didn't like it even half as good as I loved this 1989 version my gosh its perfect!!!
+epicanime009 this is the original. BUT! there is actually one before this. it was short, and Guyver 1 looked white do to bad coloring. but only hard core Guyver fans(for the few that exist) would know about it
the only things that the 2005 version of Guyver did better 1 updated graphics and better artwork 2 better voice acting (for the dub at least) 3 the story progressed further than it's predecessor but like it's predecessor it's left open ended with an uncertain future/outcome..so it keeps the viewer guessing.. 4 Also I feel like they implemented the dark plot twists concerning Sho's family and friends since a bit more time was used to further their bonds.. 5 they took the time to explain.. as much as I love the original Guyver I always felt like certain things weren't properly explained to the viewer because of time constraints it's something that the 05 version fixed. those the good points that the 05 ver. did but in terms of a darker tone and plot the original is still superior plus the aspect of "Ultra Violence" was missing from the 05 ver. which never made any sense considering it was the series selling point.. You'd think they'd go on MORE gore and violence BECAUSE it's friggin Guyver.. but nope..

Kamen Rider Ichigo manga was quiet violent for today standard, but it's probably on par with the likes of Devilman, albeit maybe not as gorey or as sexual. You can also see violence and gore on the old KR Amazon, too.
