The Zip22 is a fascinating gun because the creator intended for it to be an incredibly safe gun and accidentally made an Incredibly Unsafe gun. Forgotten Weapons has a great video on it.

If you read the marketing material for the gun it was supposed to be underslung on an AR then to be used as a last ditch or New York Reload. The owner of the company just wanted a gun under his gun so he didn't have to reload so much. I'm still not convinced it wasn't some sort of tax dodge scheme.

@@narr0wm1nd49 According to the Forgotten Weapons video, the owner ran his firearms company as basically a hobby, always willing to indulge his eccentric whims. They were known for making the best single action army replicas, until they sold the toolings for SAAs in order to make the Zip. Then they were going to make a ton of money, then buy better toolings. Instead they went under.

The sight system is original, too. The thumb safety is extended to make it easier on the finger... a long type trigger with non-slip grooves... A ring hammer... I’m Swedish and the Johnson LMG holds such a special place in Swedish pop culture. It’s the gun used by the killer in Bo Widerberg’s Man on the Roof, a Swedish action thriller from 1976, heralded as one of the best Swedish movies ever made (a view I also hold). In the film, a crazed man sits on a roof and uses it (together with other weapons) to shoot police officers. It’s a great ‘70s thriller and if you’re fine with subtitles, I highly recommend seeking it out!
And a tidbit, the gun used in the movie is an FAL mocked up to look like the Johnson.

If you're a UK based citizen like me, without a home firing range or access to any real firearms this is just such a treat, As a gamer for the last few decades there really is nothing that compares - Anton really needs the recognition he deserves, and I think this channel is really starting to do H3VR justice with all the content so far.

One of my favourite mods for H3VR adds the ability to introduce feed failures, weapon jams, and light strikes-you can even modify the behaviours of specific guns.
Not only does having slightly unrealistically high failure rates make the action-packed game modes far more engaging, but it can make the Zip22 extra realistic by giving it it's notorious 50% success rate when pulling the trigger.

There are bolt lock mechanisms available for other guns too, including the M9, Mk23, Glock, M&P, plus various .22 pistols and rifles (especially Ruger models). Plenty of service rifles with rifle-grenade launching capabilities also have a gas-shutoff device that's functionally equivalent (Yugo SKS and AKs for example have this).
Generally, it DOES result in a slightly quieter shot, but it isn't particularly useful outside of special forces and recon purposes. The reason is that on a normal battlefield, even an inefficient suppressor is generally good enough, especially when combined with "keyhole shooting" (meaning shooting from behind/between cover). The other reason slide/bolt-lock mechanics aren't more common is because sub-sonic ammo generally won't cycle most autoloading rifles unless you modify the recoil springs or gas system. So, just using sub-sonic ammo often gives you the same functionality as a specialized bolt-lock device. That's why you generally only see locking mechanisms on pistols or blowback operation firearms.

@@n_tas I'm aware that HK removed that functionality from the production versions. There are a couple of gunsmiths that have successfully added it back to individual pistols as a personal project, though. There was an old thread on either HKPro or Silencertalk about the process one guy used, and a few more folks iterated on that work to make slightly better versions as well (that automatically unlock when the slide is manually cycled). Sadly, it was basically only ever an advanced DIY type thing, so there's only a tiny handful of these lockable Mk23s around. Nobody really offered it as a professional custom service because it requires permanent modification of the frame. Which severely damages the traditional collector's value of the pistol since it's a non-standard/aftermarket mod. Plenty of folks thought it was neat &/or useful, while certain other posters reacted like it was the worst bubba-heresy they'd ever seen.

I clicked on this video so fast at just seeing the M6 Survival on the thumbnail I am honestly shocked at its appearance in game let alone it being talked about here! My father had one for many many years and it was basically the gun I grew up with that I associated with him since we spent almost all of our time in the deep woods together roving and camping and this was his rifle that he would carry and when I was old enough the one I carried myself....and then 2 years ago he traded it for a small double barrel 410 pistol despite the M6 being so rare and never having seen another one or heard of them being talked about or known to even exist before in my life. And then we get this gem of a video letting thousands of people see it and it's fun quirkiness. Having done some competitive air carbine shooting in the past, I can tell you that not being able to close 1 eye does not at all impede your possibility to become an assassin.
We were even taught to keep both eyes open to not strain the muscles around the eye.

I remember hearing that, while the Zip .22 can take Ruger 10-22 mags, like the 10 round rotary mag and whatever extended mag is available, you kinda need the rotary mag because the bolt moved way too quickly for the larger magazines to push the bullet up quickly enough. The bolt was made mostly out of plastic and it’s a blowback. The bolt’s speed was ridiculous.

I enjoy that Dave is in the newer videos. The old style where it was just Johnathan talking was good, but I like the discussions between Dave and Johnathan so much more.
The little bit of banter really makes these videos for me, especially since Dave is much like us viewers. He's a gamer and a bit of a firearms enthusiast, and he often gets to ask the questions that many of us would have for Johnathan.
    It's a good dynamic

First off, when Johnathan says that "theoretically, the tiny 10/22 ten-round rotary magazine can fit on this," he's both extremely correct and slightly off. Watching the Forgotten Weapons videos, you'll see Ian discover that these guns are EXPLICITLY designed to work with the ten-round rotary magazine. Because the Zip's bolt is polymer, all the other Ruger magazines cycle too slowly to feed reliably.
Also, Johnathan should review the FEAR guns.

As someone who is lucky enough to have a VR system, the work and dedication put into HHH is really neat. On the surface the game is very silly, and its clearly a bit of a WIP in terms of some of the game modes. But in terms of the accuracy, and just the sheer amount of firearms and weapons is so cool.

Chiappa makes a new version of the M6 Survival Rifle in any combo of either 22LR or 22 Magnum, and 20 or 12 gauge. Not only that, but they sell a version that comes with inserts for the shotgun barrel that allow you to fire just about any popular commercial cartridge you'd want from it. A bit pointless, but the idea of having a gun in the apocalypse that can fire just about anything you can find in the wild is interesting

I don’t know how it would be marketed or presented, but a episode focusing on a lot of games with a few guns each might be nice. The first thing that comes to mind is the arkane games that haven’t been shown yet. Redfall and Deathloop have a wide rage of weapons each, but prey and the entitle dishonored franchise only really have two guns in them each. Four guns isn’t enough for a whole episode. But maybe with a couple other games and or some of the stranger weapons in either game could help pad that out.

2:30 "Given that most firearms in the 20th century operated on essentially Victorian principles. The self-contained metallic cartridge, blowback operated, gas operated, recoil operated, this was all technology the Victorians were capable of even if they didn't fully realise it."
This is a fascinating take that I've never heard before. I understood that since the rotating workpiece lathe enabled precision machined parts, it enabled both powerful steam engines - thus the industrial revolution - and the fine machining required to make breech-loading weapons that enabled automatics to really take off. Now that invention did happen before the Victorian era, so I suppose it is possible they could've invented all these weapons earlier than they did, but I understood that it was a gradual process of refining and building up supporting technologies that led to these weapons, which is why we had hand-operated repeaters like the Gatling or lever actions before we had truly self-loading automatics, because you need much tighter tolerances to reliably direct the power of the cartridge into cycling the weapon. I believe the designers of the day understood the possibility of self-loaders but weren't able to realise it because they had to iterate and refine before they really took off.
I'd be interested to know more about this, I'm not saying Jonathan's wrong - I'd bet on him knowing more about this than me - but I'd love to know what research there is into this, and whether it's as uncontroversially true as he seems to imply.
