  • A quick app recommendation for digital inking notes and annotating PDFs on Linux! Xournal++ is only a recent discovery for me, but it has a lot of great features built in. Check it out at the link below!

    I use xournal++ on an hp envy x360 with a pressure sensitive pen, works like a dream for taking notes and annotating.

    My professor used Xournal (not the ++ Version) on his old Thinkpad (one of the big ones which were still made by IBM) for lectures. He used it with a pen (the Thinkpad had a digitizer which could be used with a pen but no touch screen) an he was an ABSOLOUTE PRO in it. 😁

    Thank you for showing Xournal++! For me it is my alternative for OneNote when I'm making notes in university.
    It doesn't support infinite pages yet but they are working on it. Also they are going to implement notebooks, chapters and pages-structure for easier organizing the notes. This are two features that I wait for so that I can ditch OneNote and also Windows in class and use Linux only.
    At this point I use Xournal++ for things like homework or annotating PDFs. I hope ai can switch soon completely to it. It's very interesting to see this software grow!

    Ive used xournal for taking notes last semester. I was pretty suprised that it supported my wacom immediately with pen pressure. The interface looks clean and after assigning shortcuts it actually sped up my notetaking.

      Fun fact: Xournal++ is actually maintained by many students using it for themselves

    Following the Linux philosophy, syncing should be done by something dedicated to syncing.

    Thank you, IG. I tried this years ago, like it, but don't use PDFs enough to have it around. It's good to reminded of it.

    Been very happy with Xournal for years, I use it for notes in the classes I teach, and as a whiteboard for screencast videos I make for my classes. I just started playing with Xournal++ recently...look forward to using it, seems similar but with some much needed improvements.

    I used to use Okular for PDF annotation. I switched to Xournal then eventually Xournal++.

    I used it on a daily base for school notes with my Laptop and a wacom tablet for the last half year and it worked out absolutely great for me ! :) (I also used the floating toolbox and it also is quite decent) For syncing your notes I'd recommend using a tool like syncthing

    I think its a great idea. I plan to take a closer look at this software. I currently use the Gimp to annotate and sign on pdf files.

    I tried to use pdf's for studying 10+ years ago and it was a really negative experience. I'm always horrified when there's talk of kids 'requiring' laptops and ipads for school - it really was that useless for me. There's nothing like being able to flick back and forth a few pages to see a diagram as you read more detail about it and I'll always prefer paper textbooks for that reason. You just don't get that flow with a single 2D screen. But with touchscreens and input tablets now prevalent it's interesting to see how tools have changed so cheers I enjoyed this update. All we need now is linux tablets where this sort of thing might really shine.
    (the music that started bang on 5:30 was really distracting though even with the low volume)

    I personally use this on a Surface Pro 3 and it works incredibly well. Only complaint is that I haven't been able to get the eraser on the back of the pen working but that may just be down to me configuring X incorrectly. The button on the side of the pen is however detected and working properly :)

    I use Xournal++ to fill forms that have check boxes . I use the text tool and a check character or an X.
    The character can be copied and pasted into each box.
    PDF Arranger is a good compilation app for combining multiple pdfs into one

    I have used it for a year of university and it is great, on tablet I think it is more time effective than pen and paper.
    I have a complaint though, all notes look very artificial. Pen shape is just a circle and default colours are very unnatural. MS Onenote while less ergonomic can make notes look very beautiful and paper-like. But you can't use it on Linux with pressure support in any way.

      On what kind of device (Windows surface?) and what kind of operating system (Ubuntu?) and desktop environment are you using it? I am on Ubuntu 20.04. with Unity environment and I just can't take hand written notes with a stylus on Xournal++ :(

      @@nonamenoname2618 Toshiba Portege Z20T (2in1)with Wacom EMR stylus, on Solus with Budgie desktop Environment (based on Gnome).
      My suggestion is to enable experimental input system in the settings of Xournal++, and if that doesn't work then try xournal in different desktop environments using liveUSB, so you don't have to install different OS just to try it.

    • @nonamenoname2618

      @@jacekjagosz Thanks a lot! I actually had to exchange the battery in the pen, now the it works :| Anyways, I have the problem now that the buttons on the pen are not working. I noticed there is a github issue about that. Do they work for you?

    • @jacekjagosz
      @jacekjagosz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nonamenoname2618 Try with and without experimental input in Xournal. Also check if they work outside of Xournal, because it is more likely you need to configure the driver and not the xournal, so you need to figure out what is causing the problem.
      Run "xinput test-xi2" and see if system even registers the buttons.

    • @nonamenoname2618
      @nonamenoname2618 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jacekjagosz Thanks, pressing on the button gets detected, even by xournal++. I know this, because the trace of the pen on the screen in xournal++ changes from an arrow to a point when I press the button. But the function bind to pressing the button doesn't get executed. My problem is as described as in this post: github.com/xournalpp/xournalpp/issues/940
      Thanks for replying so far, I doubt you can help me any further. But let me know if you have ideas!

    I'd like to explain why we need leaders and followers in the society. Well, we all are not same in this world and many of us don't have that ability to stick on to one thing for a long time. However, leaders have that natural ability to convince others and keep them going on a same path regularly. Looking from the point of freedom, it is a bit wrong but we all need a path that we are unaware of sometimes and leaders are one with a clear one. You can walk on the path with leaders unless you find yours. That's the reason why we need leaders. Followers, nonetheless, are very important because without follower, a leader is nothing but a pot of thoughts that no one could drink water from. Followers completes a leader and for a follower, a leader is a great source of learning for them, to define their paths and idea. So, these were the reason which I think both followers and leaders are needed for the society. And sorry IG, I know it's not the channel for this but watching that made me remember my English classes and I couldn't stop myself from thinking about it. Let me know what you think about my answer.
