Maybe after we've all been absorbed into the Matrix we won't really care or, after a while, even _know_ on an instinctual level what a fart smells like. Like, we might be aware that at some point in the past humans had these squishy, smelly bodies and that, yes, there was one particular orifice through which mostly solid waste products were excreted and which occasionally emitted odiferous gases, but will that really _mean_ anything to an entity that has transcended physicality? For that matter, what about any other emotion? What about the "butterflies in the stomach" of love, the solar plexus burning feeling of rage, or the "lump in the throat" of sadness? Of course these could be replicated in a purely virtual environment, but as we lose touch with our physical beings, what will it even _mean_ ? What is a "throat" or "heart" or "stomach" even _for_ in a hyperreal existence? I'm afraid that many could end up like those mice in that Rat Park experiment where they had opiates on demand by simply pushing a button. Maybe people could end up like those mice, just doing nothing except repeatedly pushing a pleasure button with all nuance, specifics, and setting/context long forgotten or even necessary. What is humor even when you can just press a "funny button" set at "maximum hilarity"? What is pleasure even in a purely virtual world? How do you code a simulation of an endorphin release in a living brain that doesn't even exist anymore? Perhaps we will still need a hunk of biomatter to interact with to even feel _anything_ ? We'll be hyper-advanced beings all hooked up to a quivering hunk of brain that is in the throws of ecstasy. I don't know, man. I'm excited for, as Jonas Buyle said above, "a brave new world", too, but I'm curious and cautious to see how things will develop as time goes on.

This kind of technology is going to change a lot of things. Those changes can cause problems, and we need to be aware of that and deal with them appropriately. One thing I think we should definitely do is demand that smart devices be able to work without connecting to the internet. It is frustrating when I can't use my computer for 20 minutes because Windows needs to update. Not being able to use your wheelchair for 20 minutes (or longer if the update fails and corrupts the memory) is not acceptable. We need to start designing our systems to be redundant to disconnection, even long term disconnection. The same should apply to things like smart homes and other appliances too. There will be other problems we aren't thinking about right now, I don't think the possibility of those problems should stop us from moving forward, I just think it is important to be aware of the consequences of our technology and deal with it in the best way we can.

@@jimmyostler8946 I know the feeling, I have the same position in discussions about the future and rarely ever people get the full scope of what a real AI might mean for our civilization (the "good" and the "bad") and why it might be essential for humankind to truly connect to technology. If a real (self-improving) AI is possible (probably) and if human civilization does not wipe itself out (hopefully) then this AI is probably inevitable. I don't think this AI will be turning "evil" and kill humans like (asshole) humans kill ants like many believe, but even if this AI really values human live, as the years go by and the AI leaves us further and further behind in its intelligence, humans might be devolve into nothing more than glorified zoo animals, although maybe living in luxury with any needs met. A unaltered human might need a lifetime to learn what the AI learns in a year or so, so why even bother? We would need to somehow extend out own cognitive capabilities to somehow be a part of this world that I would want to be. I would want to become a (semi-autonomous) part of the AI that succeeds human civilization and not some obsolete "pure" biological relic. Of course no one is able to actually predict the future so I might be totally wrong, but I would totally get a neural interface as soon as the technology has matured.

It could take me from my wheelchair back to assisted walking, maybe even unassisted walking, it could halt things that I’m only just starting to loose like my ability to swallow properly, so so much. It can’t give me back the brain that has already gone (best description I have been able to come up with it that my cerebellum is melting away) but with the ability to help mould new connections it could be re wired to if nothing else stop my progression. It’s all so exciting. Am I likely to see the fruits of neurolink’s labour in my (limited) life time, unlikely, I’m 42 now and won’t live to old age but my condition is genetic, my children don’t show signs but what’s to say what the future holds for them, for their children not to mention about all the other people suffering of there with similar conditions, mine is a rarity (if not even unique) among an already rare group of conditions but there are still thousands out there with conditions similar to me own and so many, many more with other brain effecting conditions, this tech could help millions of millions of people before you even get on to the things such a system could do to augment a healthy brain. Bwahahaha!

Waste of money really, at some point Internet will be free and available everywhere but for now majority of it functions just fine without a connection, same with Windows updates, you can simply disable them completely and not worry about it. I'm too excited for the BCI VR gaming aspects of it as well. Too lengthy to explain so a few good examples of these concepts are- Sword Art Online (SAO), The Matrix, Neuromancer, Black Mirror VR episodes. Note that the examples here are fictional but the concept in is a completely possible girl. Think of it as our planet being a virtual world and all of us are the users/gamers in it. Yes, that level of immersion is possible through BCI VR/ Full Immersion of the Brain if anyone didn't know.
Unfortunately, the world has been deceived into thinking that the Holy Bible is false. I urge you to not take anything tech related like this into your body. Especially, not the coming vaccine and ID dot. If the Bible was a lie, then how come so much of what it says will happen thousandths of years in the future is happening now? How can a book that is said to be a fairy tale be so accurate and true? This Neuralink is a tool of Satan. I know that you're heart aches for cool tech. But do earnestly consider the consequences of taking a "helping hand" from the Devil. It's not worth it. Consider reading God's WORD. To get to know what it is you are to do for Him as you are.
@@purpleduck3494 There is no such thing as God or Satan. Nothing the Bible said ever came true nor it will ever be. Predictable stuff like locust swarms, diseases, etc., were sure prevalent in the past and easy to predict so, people thought that it happened because it was written in the Bible or other religious books. Now we know that there is credible Science behind it and the reasons can be traced back to its roots.
Do you remember 'The Great Disappointment' where the Church and the Christians believed that the World was going to end and it never happened? Little did they know that that was a complex and idiotic prediction with no evidence, not like your yearly diseases and pest problems. People were stunned to find out that nothing came true since it was obvious of course but, they were blinded by faith on fictional stuff. Sadly, people still believe in these idiotic statements and claims written by Bronze age idiots who didn't know that the Earth revolved around the Sun and feared the Eclipse.
I urge you to stop spreading misinformation and being a misinformed individual yourself especially thinking that vaccines are bad. That's idiocy on a dangerous level. Did you know that Telephone was said to be the Devil's line and the Internet as Devil's work? But, here you are. It's always a problem before for religious folks until they try it themselves and realizes their stupidity.
I claim that the average temperature of the Earth will increase by 2 degrees and sea levels will rise. This prediction will come true obviously because of scientific evidence but, if I said that a century or two ago let alone 1000s of years ago I would have been either a prophet or a headless individual due to the courtesy of an ignorant and stupid belief system called 'Religion'
Thankfully, religion is declining year by year at a rapid rate and hardcore believers like you are becoming extinct. Remember, *Ridiculous claims requires ridiculous evidence* . Educate yourself!
This tech and full immersion will make long space flight in small spaces possible without people going crazy. Close your eyes and your swimming in hawaii
@@amazingadams6723 yess, the potential is endless.
I just want to play a real Sword Art Online
i know right! this shit is freaking me out if Neuralink works through imagine how much people are going to invest more into this type of tech. SAO could become reality lmao
Try VR headsets first, see if you like it.

No. He warned us about the probability of AI bringing humanity to extinction!
@@zombiasnow1565 And this would help us compete with AI
I just purchased this T-Shirt for my Geek Guy (ex-husband), for his Christmas present.
He wanted to say THANK YOU JOE!
This is absolutely crazy.... and I love it. I thought this was going to take YEARS, even decades to accomplish, then saw the presentation last week and nearly pooped myself. Leave it up to Elon, unbelievable. Kudos to the team that have been working on this.
Also, Sciencephile spotted @11:58!
Elon Musk speaks.
What Joe hears: No worries, just unplug whenever you want. You do you.
What I hear: We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. 😂
Unplug whenever you want. Unless of course you want activate your car, engage in commerce and/or transactions or enter a building with a security portal. When I say shit like this I feel like the crazy whackjob conspiracy nuts I have made fun of in the past. Are we sufficiently terrified yet. No?
I'm in between, honestly. I think this is the greatest thing that ever happened to humanity. I think an elegant version of the Borg that has different levels of connection and different ways to connect can maintain individuality, maintain the power of humanity against AI, and unite humanity forever.
It's hard to find people that agree with me. I've searched the third page of Google. But after this I hope I can show people how powerful this technology can become.
exactly what I was thinking - th-cam.com/video/AyenRCJ_4Ww/w-d-xo.html

Thank you for typing that out so don't have to and can just keep watching the video.
As a person with progressive cerebral degeneration and peripheral neuropathy the idea of neurolink excites me so much. Just being able to gain back even some of my motor control, speech fluency and balance would be such a game changer with being able to regain lost sensation in my legs (I feel nothing below the knees) and temperature sensation in my hands (not very safe and will progress to the loss of all sensation like me legs sooner rather than later). I do think this is the future of personal tech.

"What if we ARE the singularity, man."
It wouldn't be artificial intelligence, it would be enhanced intelligence

Joe: People go trough periods of being undatable...
Me: Yeah the period of my entire life.
If you decide so, so it may be
TheJohnnyJason be May it so, so decide you if.
my only "datable" period was when I was married. The minute I took the ring off my divorced finger I became less interesting to females. Still bitter ;{
@@squirlmy Hummm how did you become married on the first place? xD
I know that female dating behaviour is not "cool" to most of males. Just to feel bitter about it is no option if somebody wants a solution.
Nr. 1 rule is to feel good about yourself and your life. And everybody should be working on that already just for themselves.
All other social dynamics are far less relevant.
Honestly the JohnnyJason said it. If you actually believe it to be true than you can never break the cycle. If you actually want a date/significant other, then you can achieve that goal. It may not be easy, you may fail it first, but that is life bro. No one said it was going to be easy. Go outside of your comfort zone. Push yourself to achieve your goals. I believe in you. You are worth it. Good luck.

Always said I would rather be a brain in a vat than die, as long as I am still conscious. But if I can be a brain in a vat with nueralink?! Take my money!
Immortality some may say.
You may regret eternal life at some point .
A brain in a vat with Neuralink in a virtual reality world like FFXV or GTA (but without the monsters and gangsters and evil villains).
I know a bloke with a cochlear implant using 22 electrodes. He is a music lover and works as a disability support manager. You'd never know he was born 100% deaf. The concept of Neuralink is obviously well-trodden territory (like paying for things, going into space, and making electric vehicles). Awesome video Joe. Cheers $0.02
Every day I miss having a physical keyboard on my phone..
Those things were annoying! I much prefer having a full keyboard instead of the 10 buttons we had where you had to push them multiple times to get the letter you want, too bad if you missed it and had to cycle back through.

Once the physical body is bypassed, there will be no need to travel outward. We will travel inward.
