Thanks, I just picked up throwing darts as a hobby in my spare time in college, I sometimes play with my room mate, we usually go to a dart cafe that has electronic boards. It kills me every time I hit double twenty twice in a turn only to have the next turn missing it completely. This will no doubt help me a lot, thanks for this informative but simple video.
No bs I just doubled my average for 20 games straight now because of this video. Been throwing darts for a while now and couldnt figure out why I wasnt improving much. Turns out i was lined up d18 when i thought i was aiming t20.
I grew up watching my dad play darts and now hes passed down his board and darts to me and now I am practicing so I can beat him currently finding my rhythm lol. I love watching darts
Eye dominance might be useful to mention. When I shoot archery, I had to learn how to shoot left handed because I'm left eye dominant. I'm right handed with everything else, including darts. When I line up at the oche, I line up my dominant eye with the target, which means I'm forced to throw at an angle (across my body). If I line up straight with my right eye aimed at the target, my darts always go left of the target. Maybe you could cover this in another video.
Every dart player throws different. You should play how you feel is comfortable. Don't listen to someone showing you how to throw. It's a self teaching sport
I've been practicing on my own for a few months. I've been improving on my grouping but really struggle to get that triple 20. i stood to the left as suggested, MY FIRST THROW was a triple 20!! I'm over the moon! thanks for the tip!
It's actually very helpful if it "clicks" for you. The best grip is one that keeps the dart pointed at the target without any effort. The best place to stand is the place where a comfortable throw sends it right toward your target. You don't want to ever drop your elbow when you throw. These are pretty much the three keys to darts, but each one of them is unique to the individual. If you have to cock your wrist in a weird way you're probably going to twist the dart out of line when you throw, and the dart will wobble or twist in the air and the tip won't hit anywhere near where you are aiming. So however you hold the dart, it should be very easy to hold it straight. This is very often the way you hold a dart the first time you pick it up. People often stand in a spot that makes them throw across the board rather than straight at it. This makes it much harder to consistently hit the target. One neat trick I saw to find where you should stand is to mark a line on the floor directly under the bull's-eye, then place a board (2x4 or something) and Mark another line directly under the bull's-eye on that board. Line up at the board, and if you are standing in the right spot to aim at the bull the two lines will line up. Adjust your position until they do, and you've found where you should stand. If you are right handed, this is probably left of center, like the video says. Lastly, "push the dart at the target" is an excellent basic description of how to throw correctly. You don't want a lot of motion when you throw. You don't want to swing your elbow around or wind up or anything like that. You just want your forearm to move with just a little bit of support from your shoulder. The throw is almost all tricep. "Push at the target" accomplishes this.
Some good pointer Jeffery, however don't think of it while throwing, you could end up with darterites if you think to much about how to throw, stand, release etc.
A good little game to warm up is you have to score over 175 scoring only if you get a double or a bull, nearest the bull to start, best of 3 or 5 legs, and its good fun.
If you're good at golf. Use the same fundamentals and setups you do as if you were to lineup your shot. Stand far back from the board and square your shoulders. That'll give you the correct positioning for your aim instantly. Then just walk up to the board while square like he is saying... and have your arm pointing at the tipple 20.
What are you guys talking about? Guy gave us great rule of thumb for how to hold a dart. Sounds like great advice to me, especially when it comes from the ex champion.
if you rotate your body, you're no longer throwing at an angle. i don't know if i'd say it's ideal, but plenty of right handers throw from the right of the centre of the oche
Im r8ght hand and I love right hand side. Dosnt matter where...sometimes no place on dartboard and you have to change position no matter what! Anyway, also straight is good enough because easy to score x3 single 20 or more if lucky with T20 or D20.
Ive struggled a bit with hitting numbers, never noticed my position. First few tries after this al straight hitting the target (which are not tripples but just the big numbers at my level).
I'm lef thanded and mostly throwing on 19. The problem is I hit soooo many triple 3's you wouldn't belive. If half of them would go to triple 19, I'll be a solid player. I noticed that my throw is little diagonally, so that is probablly the main problem. I tried to change foot positions and moved left or right on the line, but nothing helpes. I'm so pissed off. Any advice?
Uuh? Where you point if you put your arm "straight out" depends on the angle at which you stand at the oche, not only on where you stand. The shortest distance to the board is where your shoulder and your hand is at the center line. Plain geometry, actually.
I'm pretty short so the dart boards are always hung higher in pubs than what my eyelevel would be. I haven't found any tips on how to compensate for it :/ Any advice?
me and my friends were playing games in the park when they wanted to play dart but sadly they feel like they're gonna loose so i tried to play it the game was popping the balloon using only 3 dart i payed 20 to play it then played dart i stayed focused on the baloon and the dart and throw it i popped the ballons again and again the prize i got was a pokemon bracelet cause i earned 3 points to it and so we played another game like throwing coins in a board when you win it when you got it to middle thanks anyway this will help me play dart at school
hello bob every time i throw a dart my dog starts barking and it makes my son scream, my wife has made me practice darts in the garden now, but i live in arbroath where it is cold, do you have any tips for throwing outdoors or with a dog? thank you gavin
i find it more comfortable to stand a little to the left as well, but I couldn't help notice that many prominent pros, like bristow, lowe, wilson, appear to stand on the right side. wonder why that is

Strange i find hitting triple 20 easy and very often, but i hit the bulls eye 1 in 25 shots ish everytime :( and have been on darts from 9 years old until 14 then quit until last week ;) nearly "cough" 30
I stand on the right side on the board and I throw the darts better from there then from the left side. And if you look at Wesley Newton who kills all this rules but I'm sure he will own this Bob guy...
peacefuljeffrey hold the dart and throw it lol whatever is comfortable to you. The magic isn’t in the way you hold or throw the dart it’s in the stance and aim. I know many people who can hit a bullseye (or any other number for that matter) by throwing the dart backwards (flight first).
peacefuljeffrey as long as you can throw straight at the twenty, even if they are all over the twenty and not close to the treble, that’s fine, once you have the straight throw the release and aim will come as you’ll just begin to do it instinctively and you’ll eventually start getting closer to the treble, not a quick game to get good at though
I know, but you've got to admit the skill nowadays is way better then before. Bob Anderson is indeed a legend, but that doesn't mean his theory is right. I don't believe there is a perfect way to throw, every style is effective in it's own way. And btw: Wes Newton was just a ''bad'' example. Here's maybe a better one: Jocky Wilson. Jocky Wilson had also a weird style and that's absolutely a legend too.
That's my point it's that the concept of this video doesn't make sense. People would just follow this ''rules'' because Bob says so. (which makes sense But you've got to admit that a world titel in 2013 is alot harder then it was back in the old days. And maybe if Wes was there in 1973 ( he wasn't born yet though ) then he would take surely some titels.) It's just my opinion and I love to watch old video's of darts, it's just that you can't compare a classic like Bob with someone from today

Looking good Bob, nice to be given tips by a master of the game.
So his advice is to throw the dart at the board?
Yes; wasn't very illuminating, was it?!

Cheers Bob the stance angle stuff was clear, well explained and makes 100% logical sense >:)
very nice tips!!!
Just hold and throw what feels comfortable! Then practice a lot and when done practicing practice some more! Find good competition to!
i was about to say that thing but seven months of time is a big gap!!
if you rotate your body, you're no longer throwing at an angle. i don't know if i'd say it's ideal, but plenty of right handers throw from the right of the centre of the oche
In response to madelinejames, when you throw a dart at a board you're taking a shot. So shooting is a fine way of describing it.
thanks il try the left position instead of centre
Spot on
Can you use the same principles and applied it in lighter darts

As Bobby George says 'aim where to throw it and throw it where your aiming' simples
YES
necesito una explicacion en español
everyones different, im 100% like west newton must stand to the right... sucks cos i do throw further
John Lowe stood to the far right of the oche and so does Gerwyn Price and not standing central or left hasn't done them any harm.
is the best hoor
So what it's the lesson?
That is not a tutorial. There are so many things you have to consider. The height of the thrower also matters
