Sreten, what an amazing episode! It's easily one of the best in terms of style and adventure, just like the very first Roadkill episode with Mike Finnegan and David Freiburger. There's nothing quite like buying a car online, flying to your destination, fixing it up, and hitting the open road back home!

It's kind of embarrassing when Finns imagine that we somehow have exceptionally bad roads. They are not so good in the countryside in other countries either. It's worth driving somewhere other than main roads, and your eyes will open. For example, when driving on smaller roads in our neighbor Sweden, I can say that the road network is in exactly the same condition as in Finland.

This video made me emotional. Being a Latvian who has moved to Spain and hasn't seen my family for months and more importantly, seeing you drive my home roads, literally passing my home in Vecumnieki right before the Lithuanian border, made me shed a tear. Of joy of course. It was really nice to see Latvia from another perspective and also, such kind words. Thank you for that but I will be honest and defend brothers from Lithuania because I 100% know they have better roads than in Latvia. We have only a few good roads mainly around Riga that connect Tallinn and Vilnius but the majority of roads aren't in good shape. It's getting better but still, far, far from the quality of Lithuanian, Estonian, and Polish roads.

Haha, I know this car! I'm the guilty one who drove this beaty to Finland in 2012. Seller was from Hamburg (very nice guy, I guess he was from Ukraine). When he realised that I'm BMW electomechanic engineer, he closed the doors inside Alpina and said that he will keep me in Gerrmany as he has so many customers and projects that needs me :). Ok, luckily he let me go :D. The first owner in Finland was BMW professional mechanic and he did some small repays like water pump. Eventough the gearbox was alleready once repaired in Germany, there was a need to do it again Finland.

The cameramen made a big difference in a good way. It feels like you are a movie star. It is more interactive, faster-paced, and more entertaining because of the drone overhead/profile shots and also the view of the scenery. I hope you continue with this format.
Second, I am biased toward green because Alpina Blue is all too common for the B10, a great majority is in Alpina blue. Have a look at this lovely colour Azores Green LX6S, it will be perfect with E39.
The gearbox tends to overheat at high speeds because it uses a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger with the engine coolant as the cooling medium. As you know, the M62TU uses a 105C thermostat and it actually goes >110C at spirited driving. That means the ATF is well above its ideal temperature and hence the limp mode. What you can do is change to a lower temperature thermostat (93-95C). What I did is, I removed the liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger and replaced it with the conventional liquid-to-air cooling device from an E39 530. All the older E39s use an air-cooled system that is placed directly in front of the coolant radiator. My experience has been great, the gearbox is cooler and performed so much better afterwards - no limp mode ever since. But if you insist on changing the gearbox, please opt for the ZF8HP, it will be so cool to see how a modern transmission will enhance a 21-year-old car. To turn an Alpina into a manual is sacrilegious, it was always meant to be a gentleman's version of M5.
I have three suggestions for you that will improve the car a bit. I did this for my B10 and I vouch that it works.
    1. Change the throttle body (original is 78mm) with N62 throttle body 13547535308 which is 84mm, and you should optimise the plastic flange by boring it to 84-85mm as well. It is plug-and-play, you just have to remove one wire for the cable harness connector. The car will feel more responsive and feel more powerful.
    2. Buy a progressive limited slip differential from www.racingdiffs.com. This will improve the grip of your rear wheels.
    3. The CCV system is shit and poorly designed. When you open the air intake manifold, you will see a thick film of oil. To make it better, delete the factory CCV system and use an external oil catch can. This will filter oil and engine gas blow-by, ensuring your recirculated air into the air intake manifold is super clean. You can buy the CCV blank plate via srs-concept.com/product/m60-m62-ccv-delete-kit/#:~:text=But%20you%20can't%20delete,route%20the%20engine%20vacuum%20hose.
Good luck and all the best on this project.

Transsmision: worth trying the ZF 8HP, - in my opinion. With the manual, the result is known and guaranteed, agreed. But that 8-speed autobox can be both smooth and aggressive - depending on what you ask of it. On the other hand the proper version needs to be chosen, given that the ratios vary between torque variants.

I was so confused with the intro, but it's a welcome change. Let's hope this new addition doesn't wreck your checkbook as Project Chicago did. Although it did turn a profit in the end, that was one expensive restoration. Thanks for always giving us the best wrench fests, Sreten. They're always appreciated, thank you for always taking the time to give us your best. I can't wait to see what this new addition brings to the dojo, I foresee several wrench fests in the near future. As for the paint job, definitely go for the Alpina blue and the caramel leather, that would be an amazing combo.

What a powerful, visually emotional and cool video. The Finn is grinning in the background in his own garage and the cameraman takes the best shots on the way.... and the suitcase holds up to the garage. My dream was always a W124 280 estate, I already had one. But I'm going to buy an E39 and become one of your customers. Your accuracy in your work, your eye for the essentials and the gift of not taking yourself too seriously is simply an A. Many, many thanks for this video!!!

While the 6 speed is always nice, the modern 8 speed is so much more interesting of a topic.
It offers a new technical challenge to fit correctly, keep the OEM look and functionality, and to be honest, the modern automatics with a lot of gears offer a completely different driving experience. You're ALWAYS in the powerband, the acceleration doesn't drop, and the cruising rpm is very comfy. Perfect for a high torque cruiser like the Alpina.
And the 6 speed is a 6 speed. Same old, reliable, engaging, fun. But i think it could take away from the grand touring feel and push it into the sporty direction.

Well done on your road trip! I will say if you have future trips in mind a quality toolkit for the road should be a priority. You know your cars inside and out, and I have no doubt you know off the top of your head what size sockets and wrenches would be most commonly used. I might even be a small toolbox you can carry, but equipped with all the right tools for minor repairs and quick fixes. Also the manual route is a good choice, but I feel the 8HP suits this car much better. An Alpina is a sporty car, but moreso comfortable with no fuss, so an efficient modern 8HP suits that more, while being fast shifting and quick responding. its the ying to the M5s Yang, doing the same thing but differently. The interior change would be amazing. As for the color change, blue would look nice, but I'd love to see a nice deep green on one of the projects someday.
Also, I hope at some point you plan some large event for the BMW community. I think it would go over really well as you're a well known ambassador of the BMW passion that lives in all of its enthusiasts. Maybe a meet track day thing. But no matter what keep doing what you do, we all love it and look forward to it.

I don't know if this is the right place, time or whatever. But I heard something very sad just recently. Burkard Bovensiepen the founder of Alpina passed away last Thursday. He will be honored and remembered next friday in Buchloe. So please (and I am a 100% sure you will) restore this car in the spirit of Burkard.

    • @Ezzy1989
      @Ezzy1989 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think the same! Since it was mentioned multiple times that this Alpina is more of a GT, the 8 speed suits the nature of a GT better than a row your own. We may be the outliers here, but i also feel its more interesting content wise to see this being converted to a modern 8 speed rather than everyone and their dog manual swapping things....

6-speed manual in this one would be awesome! But I kinda like the idea of the modern ZF 8-speed, since you already have E39's with manual shifters. Would be cool to see how such a classic engine would mate with a (to be honest) great modern gearbox. It's the more boring alternative, but this is a daily cruising grand tourer after all!
