I will always wonder what Bill Gothard did to her when JB and Michelle sent her to "work" for him at 14 years old.
The sad reality is if he did assault her, the cult mentality would consider her "used goods" and less valuable as a wife. It's disturbing.

Don't you remember? Jimbob said Josh was just "curious, like any young man", or something like that. I have always had the impression that Jimbob has always thought what Josh did to his sisters wasn't a big deal. And, after Josh's arrest, Jimbob denies Josh did anything. Gothard’s teaching are just so sick! My kids all left home for college, went to grad school and never looked back! They are healthy, independent and happy. What more could I possibly want as a parent? Knowing your child can take care of themselves and make good choices is the best blessing.

That’s a great theory and I’d like to believe that, but it just doesn’t make sense for a lot of reasons. Why couldn’t she just tell on whoever’s the SA’er? Why couldn’t she protect her siblings and still have her own independent life and family? I have this random idea that maybe she’s not heterosexual and she doesn’t want to marry a man. So she stays home to help protect her secret somehow. I know I’m really reaching here. I could be way wrong. I’m just saying that I don’t know what she’s doing and it’s likely we’ll never know.
As the oldest sister to 9 younger ones I would totally see that as a reason. I had and still have a deep sense of responsibility towards my sisters and a desire to protect them. Thankfully I did not have to protect them from things Jana might have had to deal with.

Man, I am SO GRATEFUL that my Christian parents taught me and my two sisters that we could be whatever we wanted to be and do whatever we set our minds to, whether independently or with a partner, as long as we were good to others and didn't hurt anybody in the process. They were good people and great parents. They kept us safe and secure and loved while giving us wings to fly.

This wound never fly in my family. Our children are very independent went to college got good jobs and one is getting her masters and she and her husband are youth pastor . God wants us as parents to teach our children to be independent and not dependent.

I worry that JB's plan is to keep Jana indefinitely as a "Happy Servant". When the kids still living at home that she looks after now along with her nieces and nephews grow up she'll be expected to take care of JB and Michelle as they age and need a caregiver. This poor girl is forever trapped.

No, she is not trapped. She just has to see that the world outside where she has lived, is different than other areas that she has been. Jana can do anything with her life. She just has to want it. There are other family who would support her and help her get together a new life. I believe that there are some really good counselors out there to help you. Please stay true to yourself and get out while you have the support. I know you feel guilty, but it isn't your fault. Please go if at least it is only a couple months. This is a great first.

I’ve always suspected there’s more to the story of Jana. I don’t know if it’s common for abusers to have several children and only abuse one. I’m sure it’s not unheard of.
I was rhe only 1 abused in my household. It is more common than people think it's called being th3 scapegoat when you get older or in my case,I felt if I made sure I was the one making her happy she would leave my sister alone. Luckily,my sisters father divorced her and my sister got out.

I work with youth who may be "in danger". I am terrified for the children in this cult. When a cult decides to remove their children from the checks and balances put in place to ascertain if children are living in a healthy and safe environment (schools, clubs, hospitals), there is a reason. In a healthy religion, each adult is responsible for their own soul. These men want to replace God - with themselves. They want God's authority over the souls of other people. Only God can, and will, judge - because God is beyond human. The "needs" that these "all too human" fathers have for their daughters is neither chaste or moral. The desire to keep children dependent upon their parents feeds those parents desire for power and control. God gave us free will - no human has the right to take that free will away from another person.
If Jana wanted to leave all she has to do is ask Jill or Ginger for help. They could come up with a covert plan saying they’re going for coffee and never go back home. Her sisters could teach her everything, give her money and house her until she’s comfortable being on her own. Maybe when Jana is closer to 40 she’ll escape. I never thought Michaela Bates would ever marry when all her younger sisters and brothers got married before her. But eventually she did.

Probably Jim Bob. A lot of fundies don't really believe in health insurance and they shun things like Medicaid. There are "faith-based" health plans, but as I understand it, they're not really insurance. They probably will pay for things like routine doctors visits. If you get really sick or have an accident, better whip out the thoughts and prayers, though. Yes, I'm being snarky.

@@maloyo7901 sure. I certainly questioned the idea, but I know people who are really happy with theirs. My daughter and her family don't have insurance and I found them a "co-op" physician who doesn't take any insurance. They pay $50/month for the adults and $15/month each for the children and they get concerned care as many times in that month as they need. They get prescriptions directly from her at cost and stitches for my one grandson cost a whopping $1.90 above the monthly fee! It shows how affordable health care can be when the corrupt governments and corrupt insurance companies aren't involved!
Shunning can be worse than physical abuse! So psychologically damaging !

Lesbian and gay folks in this culture never marry and remain in the closet. They never find the right "man" or "woman" --when you hear a fundamentalist say "I'm called to remain single" 99.9% of the time it means they are gay or lesbian. The "too picky" "can't find the right man" thing is very typical for closeted lesbians in this culture.
