The SECRET in building a successful fire was proper preparation, as you so wisely continue to teach. Thanks, David. Stay safe, warm, & well. May God bless you & yours.
I carried road flares on ATV, boating and Snowmachining trips. It’s incredibly hard to start a fire when wet and cold and a road flare has been a life saver more than once.
My buddy swears by road flares .. and for good reason . I just don’t like them for some reason .. they’re heavy for one thing . I like the wax cotton pucks , and my most recent go to is the little duraflame brickette starters .
i'm glad you got some matches. people seem to dismiss matches because "everyone knows how to use a match"... they're in for a disappointment. imho matches are just as important a fire starting tool as the others, you need to know how to strike it, you need to understand fire and materials, etc. using matches is a skill to learn.
Don’t start off trying to learn fire making with techniques like Fire Roll, Ferro Rod, Hand Or Bow Drill, etc. Learn how to ignite simple tinders first with a BIC, then progress to matches, and maybe next the Ferro Rod. You may think that BIC and matches lit fires are much too easy. LOL! Not so easy today, while the wind was blowing and the leaves were damp. Let me show you! Seemes the right way to lern something! Always begin with the easier way to do it and then go ahead praktissing the more complicated way!😉 You're a good teacher as well, David! Have a good time!
Thanks David for the tutorial. When I was a young man in Alaska I relied on the "Strike Anywhere" matches. My goal was one match to light a fire. Hiked many miles through Alaska's bush; cooked and warmed myself with my "one match" fires.
I have found that matches are easier to use than Bics, because you can stick the flame where you want it easier. A lot of times I don't use a tinder bundle; I just stick the match flame into a pile of fine twigs till a few of them are lit. I bought some of the green tip '"strike anywhere" matches a few years ago. They worked fine striking on the box but most of them failed when I was trying to strike them off concrete.
Hi David! Way back at the dawn of time when I was a Boy Scout, I remember one of the first exercises we did was trying to successfully build a sustainable fire with only two matches. I'm sure our clumsy efforts were the source of much entertainment for the adults. It was then that our scoutmaster introduced us to the concept of tenders and fire extenders.
Thank you for all your videos ! I’ve learned a lot from you ! And I’ve made stoves based on your designs . One of my personal challenges is to go up to 3000-5000 ft in the wind and rain and make a fire the fastest possible with starters that are light and small(but dependable and deploy quickly) enough to pack on my back 40 miles . Usually includes some type of simple rain and wind shelter . So.. really light lol
70+ years ago whe I was a Boy Scout, in order to advance in rank, I had to prepare, ignite, & keep a fire going with only 2 matches! Only Zippo & Ronson cigarette lighters were available back then, but we could not use them. ONLY 2 MATCHES! There were no butane lights during my Scouting days ( early 1950s.)
Lol I've watched countless primitive fire methods but if you can't make a solid fire with matches or a lighter odds of making one with primitive techniques is slim to none
Good info David. Think the old stick matches were red and white. Could strike anywhere. Also the paper matches were very popular for smokers. Can remember the Scouts 2 match fire starting. Thanks for the reminder, practice, practice. Thank you.
Book matches. If I come up with some, I'll make a video. As a young teenager we would "flick" burning matches at each other, for... fun? I'd love to flick one and get some slo mos of it in the air.
Ace has strike anywhere matches bbq section

100%... It is not as easy as we think.
Great advice 😀

Someone else mentioned that same 2 match fire challenge, goes way back I see. I was born in 58.
Matchsticks are the worst for me 😂 im on my tenth before I can start anything but i love my forest fundamentals 45 minute wick stick flame.
Parrafin-infused Jute?
those Diamond Strike-anywhere matches are almost impossible to get here in Australia these days as they've been banned for decades
I didn't know. TY!
How many "matchless presentation" type puns do you think well get?
a match made in heaven, the whole shooting match, someone that has met his match
Lol I've watched countless primitive fire methods but if you can't make a solid fire with matches or a lighter odds of making one with primitive techniques is slim to none
Man! that is/was my unsaid premise for making this video.

I remember the strike anywhere Blue Tip, Made in Ohio strike anywhere matches you could find anywhere. Remember calling the barn burners I think.
The good ones!
Hey Dave I just have a question, do you know why I’m just stardust stopped uploading? (Because I don’t know)
No, Google it.
Easiest way to get a good fire going in windy situations is to move to California. Too soon?
You’re not wrong! Haha.
I miss the Ohio Blue Tip matches.
I've heard how great they were, and the other colors too.
