  • How do we increase our endurance as brass players? In this video we will discuss different techniques we can apply to help us to improve our endurance. These philosophies can be helpful whether you play trombone, trumpet, tuba, French horn or euphonium. Oftentimes it’s not about what exercises we practice, but instead how it is that we go about executing them.

    I’ve been playing a long time but it’s only in the last few years haveI been able to work seriously on my sound production. I have discovered that many things I was doing have only served to slow me down, especially emboucher, lip

    Thanks so much for all this great advice! (I've just watched about 10 of your videos, so impressed!)
    As a French horn player, I definately over think my playing, paralysis by analysis definately applies!
    Yesterday was la fête de la musique here in France, playing outside in gusty wind and cold definately helped shift the focus too.🤣Looking forward to activating all your trombone tips, it definately makes playing more mellow. 👍

      Many of us blow out lips into position. I did it for at least 25 years but I’ve found it’s so much easier letting the lips sit there and vibrate freely. It’s made all the difference in my playing!

    Hello teacher greetings, I am Juan Brenes From Puerto Rico, I have a concern, I have the lower jaw retracted (backwards) not aligned with the upper one, I should align them, or I continue tilting the trombone down a bit .. thank you very much for your guidance and Good videos...

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Juan, thanks for checking out the videos. You ideally want to have both of your jaws aligned in there natural position. Pretend you’re blowing out a candle, that’s more of where you want the lower jaw to be. The less adjustments we make to the natural structure of our lip formation the better. Don’t compensate efficiency for effectiveness!

      Are you getting a good warmup in? Sometimes if we don’t prepare properly our chops will fail quickly. Make sure you’re only doing what you have to do, nothing more nothing less.

    Hi Dion, I think I have problem with my endurance. I easily get tired after playing one song but I play loud so I know that I get tired but it's after one song and i'm scared that I could hurt myself.
    I have braces but I don't think they are the problem really.

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you getting in a proper warmup? You want to take a little time to get yourself ready for the race. If you know you’re overblowing, back off some and see if you can resonate the horn without overblowing. Try to rest as much as you play so you don’t blow your chops out in the long term.

      @@TheChopsShop I do a little warm up for about 5 min but what do you think is a good warm up?

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everybody and everyday is a little different but 10 min of fundamentals works for me. In the past I warmed up for 40min - 1hour. Give yourself enough time to get your blood flowing. Practice soft especially if you have to play loud. Give your lips a little taste of all types of playing, everyday.

      You didn’t miss anything. This video is about how to practice your endurance not what exercises to practice. They way you approach any exercise is often more important than the exercise itself.
