This is what we come here for. Peening lessons, doming blocks and a measuring tip. All in one episode. Thank you, John. You are a wealth of information. Pretty entertaining, too. 😀

0:14 If you are as old as I am, I remember watching The Mickey Mouse Club on TV (50s). One of the phrases that stuck in my head is "Today is Tuesday, you know what that means, we're going to have a Special Guest!" The days when Annette Funicello was one of the Members!

Another great learning video Scout. As Low Buck Garage says, If you’re not having fun on a project you’re doing it wrong. That tape measure, wow, I can’t remember the last time I saw an imperial tape measure😂😂. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

I've have tell you Scoutcrafter, I wish I'd known three decades ago; about that 'find the center' trick you showed at the end of the video. All I've ever done with square, or rectangular pieces of steel, and wood is I've gone corner to corner both ways, then scribed a line in to roughly find the center point, and said "it's close enough". There's numerous things like this you've shown on this channel, where I'm left wondering why I bothered to take shop class in school. I'm now realizing just how little they explained to us in there.

I love the halving tip. When I get a bunch of weird measurements I must divide, I will often revert to a (gasp) metric tape measure. The same tip could be applied to any division (1/3, 1/5 etc.) too. For laying out clapboards on uneven walls, I've seen people make story-sticks which will space the clapboard layout in a similar fashion.

Nice idea with the hammer. You could go into business selling these things, there would have to be a market out there for something like that. Loved the doming kit, that was brilliant.

John, nice video. Great hammer design and it’s usage. You are the Felix the Cat of the tool refurb world. You are forever reaching into your bag of tricks and pulling out something amazing and interesting. Your sheet metal punch and die sets and various doming blocks and punches were a great example. I have a similar set so have to chuckle at that fact. I like your simple striking block. I’ll need to make one for myself. Nice peening demonstration. Great Mosh.
    Best Regards,
    John

Being the Dean would be a waste of ScoutCrafter’s talent. Instead of teaching the uses of various tools he would be stuck dealing with discipline problems, irate parents, and the NY city and state educational bureaucracies.

The angling of the tape measure is a great trick, and even better when you are trying to divide a board up into something other than halves where you can't use diagonals. I have used my doming block for a few years now and not once did I think about using it with the Dake - got to go find a candidate for amputation now 😄

Thanks for the video, much appreciated.

A trick to success forming metal on the bench is to use material that was formulated to be readily bent and shaped. Metal gallon cans that are used for acetone, thinners, mineral oil, etc. work a treat for this work and can be readily soldered. Appliance shrouds as found on things like washers and dryers work great for larger jobs and can usually be had for free at the dump.

Never heard of a doming block. I'm going to have to look into that.
    I recently purchased a
3 in 1 metal worker tool just to learn something new in my shop.
It shears, bends and rolls thin sheet metal.
A doming block and peening set may go along with this pretty good.
Thanks a lot John, now you're videos are costing me more money 😉🤪😲

Great video, I have a couple very old 24 oz.+ ballpeins that need to be hung, but I've been reluctant because of the relatively large heads & tiny eyes. Looks like a great modification to mitigate that & put an old tool back to use.
The tape trick is useful and quick.
Just to expound a bit, if you're trying to divide a board into say 3 or 4, (or more) equal selections...pull the tape to a (any) measurement that is easily divisible by the number of pieces you need.
    For example:
If your board is 14-5/8" wide and you want 4 equal sections, pull the tape diagonally to 16" and mark every 4 inches (@ 4"-8"-12").
Another way is to double or halve simple fractions (doesn't translate to compound numbers) is as simple as doubling or halving just the denominator.
The trick is you double to halve & halve to double.
    Example:
    What's one half of 9/32"? (32 x 2)
    - 9/64"
When halving you double the denominator.
    Example:
    What's double 5/16"? (16/2)
    -5/8"
When doubling you halve the denominator.

The "finding center" tip can also be used if you need to mark off a board in equal sections. For example, using your 8 13/16" board
.. if you needed 5 equal strips, swing the ruler til you're at 10", then mark the 2" 4" 6", 8" positions and you'll have equal size sections.

Made the handle put it in the head and have never used it..............Moral of the Story seems to be you can go thru life just fine without ever having a ball peen hammer.
