They were the most explosive and fun team in the 80s. I would put them up against any of the Marion teams with the talent and aggression they had. Almost every team around Muncie was in the top 20, but Central was the team of the decade.
In 1987 Marion DESTROYED more or less this same team at the Athletic Arena.The Giants blew Chandler Thompson and his buddies right back to Muncie by a lopsided 79-56 score.They couldn't compare to Purple Reign.
@@rimmersinner5485 No way.Marion won the State in 1986 with all five starters as juniors.Muncie Central got throttled by 23 points by the Giants in February 1987 at the Athletic Arena (as juniors.)The Giants spent the entire second half dunking on the Bearcats.There is no comparison.Oak Hill Coach Kevin Pearson said it best about the 1987 Marion team..."They are the best team I have ever seen and the best I hope I EVER see."
@@asianoramaagain2269 i understand but that 87 Bearcats team battled injuries all season long. In 88 they still eerr battling injuries throughout the season and still managed to win state. Yes id give a slight edge to 87 Marion Giants vs the 88 MC Bearcats. But the healthy 88 Bearcats would make it a close one.
@@rimmersinner5485 Interestingly,Bill Green coached both the 1969 Indianapolis Washington State Champions and the 1987 Marion team.When asked which team would have won between those two,Green said Washington would have.Yet the 1969 Marion team had a 12-point 4th quarter lead on the Continentals in the 1969 Final Four afternoon game before Washington rallied to win it.The only game I ever saw in the Muncie Fieldhouse was the 1986 Marion-Muncie Central NCC showdown.Both were 6-0 in the conference going in.The Bearcats had Dee Erby but the Giants pulled it out 74-69.
